The President on Privateering.
The following letter of the President
to the New York Chamber of Commerce
was read before that body the evening of
Wabhihoton, March 31,1860..
To P. Pent, Eeq.—My Dear Sir: Your
favor of the 6th inst.,- enclosing the
able and interesting report and resolu
tions of the.Chamber of Commerce'of
New York, infavorof “perfect immuni
ty’’ (from capture,) of all private' prop
erty upon the ocean in time of war, was
.duly reoeivedand referred to the State
Department. It has since oocurred to
me that .respect bo eminently due to the
Chamber requires that I should address
you a few remarks in answer.
War is a dreadful calamity, shocking
to humanity, and ought to be avoided
by all honorable means; but whilst man
kind continue in their present state, it

and maliciously slandered his daughter,
a young lady still in her teens and) at

of the county. The trial created intense ■
