“Dissolvin’ the Union.**
The last Knickerbocker Magizino has
the following, which is not bad, either
as a story or a speech:
During the exciting campaign of 185-,
in Illinois, a prominent politician made
a disunion speech at Quincy. After he
was through, and before the crowd had
dispersed, a man who styled himself
"The Aforesaid M. D.” was called for.
He was lifted upon the platform, so
"elevated” that he could not stand
without holding on to something. He
said *.
"Gentlemen and Indies, you’re
of dissolvin’ the Union; you^oe
it; if you go to —-vour'can t do it I
Thar’s that ore flpg-li-wavin’ up thar,
called the Star Spangled Banner; how
y<\ are a-goih’ to divide that, ha ? Are
you a-goin’ to give the stars to the Norf
and the stripes to the Souf? ' No
Bir-ree; the thing can’t be did.—
^ C "And thar’s that good old toon that
the band’s a-playin’ out thar, called
Yankee Doot.lo; how ye a-goin’ to di
vide that, eh ? Are ye a-goin’ to give
the Yankee to the Norf and the Doodle
to the Souf? I say boldly, the thing
can’t be did! [Cheers.]
“And thar’s that stream of water a-
rUnnin’ down thar, called the 'Fathers-
o’-Wotters’ j how are ye a-goin to divide
that? Are ye a-goin’ to dam it up with
Mason and Dixon’s line ? I say you
can’t do that thing 1 Wal, you can’t 1
[Cheers.] ....
“And thar’s the railroad Iayin out
thar ; how ye a goin’ to divide that, eh ?
are you goin’ to tie it up with Mason
and Dixon’s line? You can’t do it !—
[Cheers.]
“And thar’s all the fast liosse3 standin’
round here; how are ye a-goln’ to di
vide them ? old hossesl Are ye a-goin,
to run ’em North, and run ’em South’
and run ’em East, and run ’em West ?
[Cheers.]
“And thar’s all the handsom wimmin
round here ; how ore ye a-goin’ to di
vide them ? Are you goin’ to give the
old ones to the Norf. and the young
ones totlio Souf? Waal, you don’t!
If you go to thunder you can’t do it!
[Immense cheering.]
“And thar’s all the feathered tribe
and other bird’s a-flying about here and
the chickens and egg’s-nest, and the
yaller legs and the black-legs; how you
goin’ to divide them, eh ? Are you
goin’ to give the pullets to the Norf
and the cocks to the Souf.” [Tremen
dous cheering.]
Our reporter could hear no more, for
the roar of laughter which ensued, as
the “Doctor” caved in and fell from the
platform.
Battle amoxo tub Typos.—On Satur
day evenning, when the news of the
great prize tight was agitating the whole
town, a number of typos, part of them
belonging to the Gazette and part to the
Commercial office, got into a “muss”
on the corner *of Fourth and Vino
streets, when the cheers for, and bets
on Heenan, rose above the “din of bat
tle.” One man in thelightkcpt crying
out that he was alone, that the whole
crowd was fighting him ; “All on one,”
said he; “Oneagainstamillion 1” After
blowing for ten or .fifteen minutes, the
spirit having effervesced, the highest
note was hushed, and the belligrents
wore as still as empty bottles.”- Cin. limes

In view of the fact that every member of
the human family is more or less subjected to
some of the above complaints, besides in
numerable other conditions in life, which
by the assistance of a little knowledge or
exercise of common sense, they may be able
so to regulate their habits of diet, and with
the assistance of a good tonio, secure per
manent health. In order to accomplish this
desired object, the true course to pursue is,
certainly, that which will produoe a natural
state of things at tho least hazard of vital
strength and life; for this end Dr. Hostetter
has introduced to this country a prepara
tion called HOSTETTER’S STOMACH
BITTERS, which at this day U n* a new
medicine, but one that has been tried for
years, giving satisfaction to all who have
used it. The Bitters operate powerfully upon
the stomach, bowels and liver, restoring
them to a healthy and vigorous notion, and
thus by the simple process of strengthening
nature, enable the system to triumph over
disease. Diarrhoea, Oyoeatery or flux, so
generally contracted by new settlers, and
caused principally by the change of Water
anil diet, will be speedily regulated by a
btief use of this preparation. Dyspepsia,
a disease which is probably more prevalent
when taken in all its various forms, than
any other; the cause of which mar always
be attributed to demngements of the diges
tive organs, can be cured without fail by
using HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BIT
TERS os per directions on the bottle. For
this disease every physician will recom
mend Bitten of Borne Kind, then why not
uso an article known to be infallible 7
Evcty country have their Bitten os a pre
ventive of disease, and strengthening of
the system in general, and among them all
there is not to bo found a more heMthy
people titan the Germans, from whom this
preparation emanated, based upon scientific
experiments tvliioh lias attended to advanoa
the destiny of this great preparation in the
medical scale of science.
■SEVER AND AGUE.
This try inn and provoking disease, which fixes its
relentless grasp on the bod/ of man, reducing him to
a mere e'uudew In a short space of time, and rendering
him physically and mentally useless, can 1* deferted
and driven from the body by the uso of IlOSTETTEIl’8
RENOWNED BITTERS. Further, sty of tho nl arc
stated diseases can not be contracted - Lett exposed to
any ordinary conditions prcJoolng them, If the Bitters
are used as per directloni. And as It neither create,
lausea nor offends the palate, and tendering unneces
sary any change of diet or interruption to usual pur
suite, hut; omotes sound sleep and healthy digestion,
tho , ompl: 'nt Is thus removed as speedily as is con
sistent wit't the production of a thorough and perma
nent core.
For Persons in advanced years
Who are suffering from an enfeebled constitution and
Infirm body, these Bitters are Invaluable as a restora
tive of -trength and rigor, and seeds only to be tried
to be appreciated. And to a mother wltUe nursing,
these Bitters are Indispensable, especially where the
mother • nourishment Is inadequate to the demands
ot the chll£ cons- uentty her strength must yield,
and hero It Is whets a good tonic, such as II- --tetter's
Stomach Bitters Is needed to Impart temporary st ngth
and vigor ib the ayt'.rm- Ladles should by oil means
try this remedy for all cases of debility, and before so
doing, ask your physician, who, If he Is acquainted
with the vlrtuee of the BlUers, will recommend their
use In nil cases of weakness.
CAUTION,—We caution the pul,lie against
using any of the many imitations or coun
terfeits, but ask for Hostetter’s Celebrated
Stomach Bittees, nnd see that each bottle
has tlio words “ Dr. 3. UoeteU-r’s S.omach
Bitters” blowp on tlic side of tho bottle, and
stamped on tho metallic cap oovciing die
cork, and observe that our autograph signa
ture is on tbe label.

DR. M’LANE’S „
CELEBRATED
LIVER PILLS,
FOR IM COM OF
Hepatitis or Liver Complaint,
DYSPEPSIA AND SICK HEADACHE. '
'
Symptoms of a Diseased Liver.
P AIN in the right side, under the edge of
the ribs, increase on pressure; sometimes
the pain is in the left side; the patient is'
rarely able to lie on the left side; sometimes
the pain is felt under the shoulder blade,
and it frequently extends to the top of the
shoulder, and is sometimes mistaken .fot at
rheumatism in the arm. The stomach is
affected with loss of appetite and sickness,
the bowels in general are costive, sometimes
alternative with lax; the head is troubled
with pain, accompanied with a dull, heavy
sensation in the back part. There is gehe-
rally a considerable loss of memory, accom
panied with a painful sensation-of having
left undone something which ought to have
been done. A slight, dry cough is some
times an attendant. The patient complains
of weariness and debility; he is easily startled,
his feet are cold or burning, and he com
plains of a prickly sensation of the skin;
his spirits arc low; and although he is satis
fied that exercise would be beneficial to him,
yet he can scarcely summon up fortitude
enough to try it. In fact, he distrusts every •
remedy. Several of the above symptoms
attend the disease, but cases have occurred
where few of them existed, yet examination
of the body, after death, has shown "the
liver to have been extensively deranged.

Tho IRON being absorbed by the blood, and
thus circulating through the whale system, no
part of tho body can escape thoir truly wonder
ful influence
The experience of thousands daily proves that
no preparation of Iron can for n moment bo
comparod with it. Impurities of the blood, de
pression of vital energy, pale and otherwise
sickly complexions indicate its necessity in al
most every conceivable case. In all cases oT
female debility (fluor albus, chlorosis, etc.), its
effects are delightfully renovating. No remedy
has ever been discovered, in tbe whole history
of medicine, which exerts such prompt, happy,
pnd fully restorative effects. Good appetite, com
plete" digestion, rapid acquisition of strength,
with an unusual disposition for active and
choorful oxeroiso, immediately follow its use.
As a grand stomaehio and general restorative
it has no superior and no substitute.
