principal reason given for this was. not
that this ‘mooli rrt»p«iel- was due our
cnenutth hut tlial Abe logical leffect of
this would be to satisfy the entire South,
with great-unanimity in all the States,
either that our rights, interests and
honor coinId nut'hr preserved in the l T n
ion ; or else, wo would thereby olitnin
all that reasonable men could ask, and
thus he enabled with safety to main
tain our present federal relations.
Hut- l»«w annuls the matter now.—
South Carolina has seceded, and it is
rejiortod that the Governor ol that
State lias already declared war against
the Federal Government, and with
evetv mail tho news of resounding
arms it looked for. When this eomes,
there is no doubt in the world as to
what course Georgia ought to pursue.
To tight with tho government against
South Oaiolina, would be to figbt ngnhist.
ourselves, and for the ruin of our dear
est interests.
However true it may be, it is of no
use now to say that this state of affairs
lias been unnecessarily precipitated
upon us, bv tlie inconsiderate notion
of rash inen. We do not question
theii motives, and it may turn out
that tboir’s were the counsels of wis
dom. ' WY have all tho time urged the
necessity of a united South, fully-belie
ving that the safely of our peculiar in
stitutions depended upon it, and if this
cannot he obtained in the wav tec
thought eii-iest nud best, we shall still
strive for it in any -otlior way that se
cures protection atul is free from perni
cious, effects, because, in our opinion,
it is the great datideraiuin, If Alabama,
Mississippi and Florida—whose Conven
tions meet before onrs—go out of the
t’nion, then, with the lights before
us, we think Georgia should join them
at once, and without let or hindrance
make tv common run so against a com
mon enemy. Put in regard to this,
the Convention will doubtless come to
wise and patriotic conclusions.
It's vastly easier to get into trouble
than to get out of it, nnd we hope con
servative men will he largely in the
ascendant in tho Convention, that
“ wisdom,'joslicc and moderation" will cha
racterize their pioeeedings, and that all
men of all parties will cordially sustain
the State in whatever position she then
takes.
Then: J* no knowing whirl u day may
tiring forth.
The country is greatly excited, and,
in whatever manner quiet may be restor
ed, we most earnestly hope that it will
not ho done until the. South has full as
surance of the recognisance of her
rights. There hiu> been somo hope
that this might be accomplished in the
Union by a co-operation of, at least a
majority, of the slaveholding States.—
But it now seems very probable that
Ala., Fla.,nnd Miss., will immediately fol
low South Cnrolinaout of tho Union, nnd
if they do, it is lmrdly a question us to
what Georgia will do under thoso cir
cumstances.
Several of the lending statesmen of
the country have materially changed
their position since tho present crisis
commenced, nnd our advico to the peo
ple is to follow no politician or set of
politicians, hut their own best- judg
ment and honest convictions of duly to
themselves and their posterity. But
above all things, whatever may be the
resu.t, let Georgia he a unit in the sup
port of the deeission of the Convention.
If war must come let every Georgian
tty to her Banner resolved to conquor
or die under the stabile— colors of her
honorable cause.
