patch of tlio 3d inst., says:
On Sunday last a gunboat came up
Pagan creek, in Isle of Wight county,
and landed twenty-five cavalry, (wo
pieces of artillery, and one hundred
arid fifty infantry at Smithfield.. Ttaa
parlies composing this expedition had
instructions to march across the coun
try to Olierry Grove, on Clmckatuck
creek, nnd capture the Confederato
pickets thore. In the meantime tho
Yankee gunboat was to go around.and
meet tlie Yankees nt Cherry Grove.—*
At Scott’s factory, four or five miles
from Smithfield the invaders were met
by about seventy-five Confederate caval
ry, when a skirmish ensued, and tho
Yankees retreated back to Smithfield,
losing seven prisoners. At Smithfield
they woro without the aid of their gun
boat, it having gone to Cherry Grove,
and our men being reinforced, attacked
Uriel captured the whole party, with not
a man hurt of tlio Confederates, and
four Yankees killed and two or three
wounded.

.Station, states, in addition to theabovo
‘.acts, that tho gunboat ‘‘Smith Briggs”
was attacked by tho Confederates at
Cherry Grove and destroyed. A train
wus sen t down from Petersburg yester-,
day to briug up the prisoners, who had
urrived at Broad Wator.
Tho train front Petersburg yesterday
evening brought in III of these prison
ers among whom were five coinraisi
sioned officers. Among them was a no*
gro lieutenant.
