breakfast on the morrow. *
The logs in the large kitchen
fire-place burned merrily, the
great oven was all a-glow ; and
mother, who Was superintending,
said it only needed to burn the
embers, which it was fast appro
aching, to be ready for the first
instalment of our baking.
Just then, the door at the left of
the fire-plaee opened, and Peol
entered. He was an Indian of
notoriously bad-chnrqptgr, but had
always behaved himself with pro
priety in his frequent visits to our
house. It was so mirch*a matter
of course for an Indian to come in
without ceremony, that by the
time he was fairly appropriating
the supper Peggy placed before
him, we liad almost forgotten his
presence.
Peol finished his repast, and then
came and stood with his back to
the fire. Physically he was a
noble specimen of humanity—
turned uo an inch or so in ir5nt,
a flap fell upon* his neck behind.
On tlie tep two round peaks ran up,
something like the mitre of a bish-
covered with heavy
membered that the snow m our
yard, as"in those of opr neighbors,
had often been hard-pressed fiy the
rolling scuffles of these .screeching
serjenaders; while people within
were passing a wretched night.-r-
She well knew the danger of offen
ding them and arousing theifr 16-
venge.
While deciding upon her course,
mother was stirring the hot embers,
and drawing them to the mouth of
the oven with the long-handled
fiiAitni Ppal gtnnrl nt her left—
hand, nearly half-way from the
oven to the door where he had
entered, and whieh remained 6pen.
His face was turned towards her
as if waiting her answer.
Her decision being made, she
said firmly : - r
“Peol, I cannot and vviH not let
yon stay here to-night;”
Instantly he bared his knife.—-
It. glittered, but not so terribly as
the wicked green light that shot
out from under the shaggy brow of
its enraged owner.
“It is war time,” he growled.
‘I would scalp you for .a nine-
pence!”
The instant the knife flashed in
the fire light, mother, with a dex
terous movement, drew out the
red hot shovel,' full of glowing
coals, and without moving a step
suddenly s vung.it close uuder hi*
chin, calling out—
“ Run! run Peol! or I will put
them in your bosom ! I will burn
you to death!”
He hesitated and stepped back..

He surveyed us awhile in silence,
and then he said : “Me stay here
all night. Me sleep here,” point
ing to the’kitchen floor.
“No,-Peol,” said mother kindly,
“we cannot keep you.”
Hg repeated, with fierce authority,
“Me stay here to-night.”
Mother knew, by sad experience,.
the consequence of benevolence to
the copper-colored vagabonds.
She knew that after we were as*

and sparkle almost like the burning
coals before him. . ,
He wavered a moment, .an
sprang into the entry. In the same
instant the shovel and its cont fJ^f
flew into the fire-place, and mother
braced against the door, was hold

pushed it over the latch. Mother
aeld it. while Peggy placed her
stout sholder against the door.
The Indian tugged, grunted and
swore fearfully, but the aoor was.
true to its trust. ' _ .
Silence reigned within. Uranic
was asleep in-the cradle; Annie.. _
too frightened to cry, and L. with,
eyes wide open, was watching .to*,
see how it would end.
Mother whispered to peggy :
“Whatif the ,latch breaks?
As she spoke Pepl ran out of door*
to a window that was . fastened.---

into the entry and bolted the .out

secured, when back came the In

Mother returned to the kitchen,
and poured a pail of water on the-
fire. Peggy at the same time blew.
out the lamp and shut the ovem
door.
The darkness of the room ena
bled us to see the great black Peol
at the window, making frightful .
gestures, and uttering awful im
precations in his broken language.
Meanwhile mother, aware that
an Indian and his gun were never
far separated, took us noiseless into
the parlor, and seated us on the
floor beneath the only window
looking upon the street straighten
ing our limbs, she-placed the cra
dle over them close to us, and
whispered, l< Now sit still as mice.
If. Peol should fire into this win
dow, the bullets will go over your
heads and strike the cealing—he
cannot hurt you here.” Young as
