Doing Nothing Does Not
Please Judge. Other
Court News.
Henry Newsome was arraigned
in the city court Monday and his
plea was that he had not done a
thing. Henry’s plea suited t he
solicitor because it was just ex
actly what Henry was charged
with.
Henry is a healthy strong negro
about 22 years old and would have
been described as a “likely nigger”
fifty years ago and would have
brought a good price.
When Henry discovered that
the charge against him was that
he had done nothing he decided
there was no use trying to dispute
the accusation.
.Judge Jordan thought Henry
needed some active exercise and
so he told him to take lessons
under Captain Hedges for s'x
months.
Four other negroes entered pleas
of guilty to various charges as
follows: Sam Burnett, Charlie
Cumming, Son Dyer and John
Monroe.
NEGROES AND PISTOLS
ARE BUSY AGAIN.
Mack Jackson Shoots
John Watts to Death.
Liquor is Cause.
Another negro dead, Johh
\Vatt9. Mack Jackson shot him
last Sunday with a pistol on the
county line road between tins and
Jlnncock counties. They were re
turning from church and liquor
played a prominent part in the
tragedy, so it is said.
It sounds very much like the
ordinary negro killing and they
are becoming very ordinary and
common here of late and this may
solve the negro problem at last.
Coroner Ainsworth held an in
quest over the dead body Monday.
Dr. Dickey at Methodist
Church Next Sunday.
Rev. Dr. J. E. Dickey’, president
of Emory College and one of the
ablest preachers of this state, will
preach next Sunday morning at
the eleven o’clock service at the
Methodist church in this city’.
The Methodists are planning to
make this service a sort of a rally
day and much interest and enthu
siasm is being shown and a strong
effort being made to have a record
breaking attendance. The public
is cordially invited.
SANDERSVILLE, GEORGIA, SEPTEMBER 25. 1907.
ESTABLISHED IN IS4I
PURITY ICE COMPANY
HIT BY MEANEST MAN.
False Report Being Circu-
lated as to Product
of the Factory.
The meanest man is yet to be
found out. Just who he is is yet
shrouded in mystery, but it is the
man, whoever it is, who started
the report that the ice manufact
ured in Sandersville is dealing out
sickness and death.
A prominent physician of the
county recently notified the city
authorities that it is reported in
lennille that the ice turned out
by the Purity Ice Company has
caused much typhoid fever m the
city and that its product was dam
gerous to life and health.
Immediately the city officials
began an investigation and City
Clerk Armstrong made inquiry of
all the physicians in the city and
they all report that they aro not
now treating any cases of typhoid
fever and as a matter of fact there
is not a single case in town at
this time.
Just how such a report got out
is shrowded in mystery, but the
city is under obligations to a
prominent physician in Tennille
for letting the outhorities know
of the report so that correction
can be made.

JACKSON WANTED HIS
CASE “SQUSHED ”
But Had to go to Trial For
Selling Intoxicating
Liquors.
A lemon was presented to Frank
Jackson in the city court Monday.
;Iu other words, Frank was con
vinced that prohibition will pro
hibit, at least for twelve months
at a time.
Frank was “sicused” of selling
liquor but thought the case ought
to be “squshed” against him for
the reason that he never sold the
liquor but gave it away. There
was some very convincing evi
dence, however, that some cash
was seen to p»bb and the defend
ant was convicted.
Judge Jordan wauted the usual
large sum in greenbacks or gold
or other good money and if not
forthcoming Frank will have to
do time in the chaingang for a
whole year.

Seattle, \\ ash.—E. IT. Fowler,
of the Japauese-Korenn exclusion
league, declares tliRt the people of
the United States have no idea yet
of the Japanese-Korean situation.
He says:
“The Japanese here aro almost
without exception trained soldiers,
able-bodied men, and they cun be
brought together ns a unit. This
was done in Vancouver, at the
time of the riot, when at the call
of the bugle every able-bodied
Japanese in the town was called
together in perfect military order.
The quickly assembled army sent
a scout out to ascertain the state
of afTuirs and found it was not so
serious as was feared, and as they
had been called together by the
assembly call, they were given the
call to dismiss and they all re
treated in perfect order.
“Every Japanese in the country
is kept track of—he must make
regular reports to his consul, so
that the emporer can know at
once exactly where every one of
his subjects are, in case he i's
wanted for military duty. So
perfect is this organization that
within a few day’s time Japan
could mobilize on the Pacific
coast an army of 100,000 trained
and armed soldiers.
“This army could capture every
gun and every arsenal on the
Pacific coast within 24 hours.”
