Young Female College Com
mencement.
As will he seen elsewhere, the un-
dcrgiaduates of this flourishing female
College, will be examined ill their
various studies on the 19th and 20th
inst. The Junior and Sophomore
classes, are both large and well ad
vanced in their studies; so that an in
teresting examination may he expec
ted, and one that will doubtless prove
satisfactory, to teachers pupils, aud
parents.
The evening of the 24th, will be ea
gerly looked to by the Seniors, at
which time they will rcceaive their Di
plomas. These girls for five years,
have tread the intricate paths of
knowledge together, an unbroken
class; and now they are on the thres
hold of womanhood, and of their re
ward, for these long years of study.
May the future which stretches out so
invitingly, be hut a faint reflex of the
hapiness in store for them. We
spake hastily ot the examination of
this class last week. In “Moral Phil
osophy,” Astronomy,” Geology, and
Trigonometry, they proved themselves
worthy of the careful teachings of Mr.
Pakcr through a loug scries of years;
and it must have been peculiarly grab
ifying lo that gentleman, to have wit
nessed, the maturity, aud depth of
thought, which they evinced through
out the trying ordeal. Without detrac*
ting Horn the highly creditable exam
ination, iu the other branches, we
inclined to thiuk that in Moral Philos
ophy, they shone brightest evincing
by their prompt ready answers, a per
fect knowledge of; and thorough ap
preciation of the great truths, left ou
record liy the master minds, and spiri 1
of our own, and past ages. This part
of the examination was conducted by
Col. Rockwell; whose ripe scholar
ship, and happy faculty of imparling
knowledge, was self apparent, as the
class grasped the most intricate, and*
metaphysical, ideas without a mo
ments hesitation. On the evening of
the 25th a concert, by the Music-Scholars
will be given. This Departmeut of
the Collcged is under the immediate
supervision of Mrs. Col. Young; and
all who know any thing of that
cotnplishcd lady’s musical talent,
be prepared for a rare treat. The
interest in the College is widenin;
and deepening, and we expect to sec
a large attendance. As a fitting finale
to commencement week, the Sen
will give a party; on the evening of the
20th; their fust; and it promises to he
the occasion of the week.
We notice several of the boys about
town, bowiug across the street to the
school girls, for the past tew days; in
fact we arc all very polite lo these Mis
ses. Of course we are not fish in,
for and invitation, not we.
A Gay Fishing Pabtt.—One
evening not long since, two preacher*
one editor and a genlelmcm might have
been *eeu gracing the banka of the
quiet Ochlockonee, beneath whose
murky waters the finney host moved
on in their tantalizing merriness a*
though two followers of the ancient
professiohls at the business, one disci
ple of Faust, and one of the cleverest
men in the county were not their vis
itors. But the “cootcrs” they were
more sociable and ‘'enterprising” than
the fish, they amused us no little; we
gtacefully landed out two and the pre
siding Elder one, a rich scene too to
see a two hundred pound presiding
Elder bent over a poor little cooter
preaching his funeral and helping to
swell the already too full river with
huge drops of perspiration. On the
whole it was a gay fishing crowd, one
of whom we are glad we were which.
The verdict was that the fish were not
mterprising the cooteis were too so
ciable, and that the musquitos were
still more so.
The startling cry of Caterpillars
comes walled on every breeze. We
hope our planters will uot cry wolf un
til the fold is actually invaded.

A. llomeister would call the atten
tion of the public to his ice-cold Soda

subject, after a free discussion of the

ATTENTION. FARMERS.
The Thomas County Agricultural
Society, rightly appreciating the im-
poi lance of this county being repre
sented; as the, leading County in this
end of the State Should be, at the State
Fair; have taken the right course to
effect this desirable object. ,
As will be seen elsewhere, they have
appointed a central committee with
fill! powers to act; composed of our
very best, and most wide awake citi
zens.
Let the Planters, Housewives, arti-
zans, and every body respond to the
stirring appeal made to them, and
Thomas will cover herself, with addi
tional lustre.
An effort though it be but a small
one, on the part of all, will without
any doubt, give us the second, if not
the first premium.
Will the Planters come up to the
work like good, true, aud wise men.
Will they reflect a moment, and calcu
late what it would be worth to our
county, to have it announced at the
great State Fair, in Macon, before
tbe assembled Thousands; that TnOM-
A8, is the banner county in the State.
It would give us a notoriety, that we
little dream of. Wc shall have more
lo say on this subject, when time and
space will allow.

Tiie Masonic Hall a Certain

the building committee on the part of
the Lodge, signed a contract to build n
Lodge room on the corner of Broad
and Fletcher St., with certain citizens
on day before yesterday.
The building is to be of the best
quality of brick, 28 by 85 feet, two sto
ries high (with a basement) with all
the modem improvements, and is to
be completed by the 1st day of Janua
ry next. We congratulate the mem
bers of St. Thomas Lodge on the pros

own.
A young man returning home a few
evenings since in our quiet town, in
the absence of pale Lunas’ rays,
thought that be could trust to his ol
factory organ, to guide his footsteps :
alas for human calculations ; a neigh
bor having lelt his gate open, instead
ot scenting danger, he put that very
useful member directly, and in violent
contact with the gate, which proved
to be harder than his nose, the latter
was well flattened, whilst the unfeel
ing wood swung back to its place. The
language used on tbe occasion, was
not indecorous, but it is represented
as being very vigorous, embodying
some of the strongest expressions in
our vocabulary.
He says thaljhe don’t know why it ii
that people cannot swing their gates on
the inside. His sweetheart had bet
ter furnish him with a lantern the next
dark night Whenever he hears a
gate bang now, he claps his hand in-
stinetlively to his nose.

Sabbath Breaking.—There arc
many things as public journalists tl at
