Natural Resources of . Florida,
v* % \: No. 2.
I Among the many natural resources
•f the South, probably none arc at
tracting more attention, at present,
than tbe yellow anti pitch pine forests
of East Florida.
Although tbe entire South-Atlantic
and Gulf regions abound, more or less,
in this great source of wealth, yet n«»
other section has facilities equal to
East Florida for reducing it to a prop-
per commercial value. In additon to
tbe two Rail Roads which cross each
other nt nearly right angles, at about
a central point of this section; having
their termini respectively at Jackson
ville, Fernandina and Cedar Keys,
arc many small streams emptying into
the River, down which tho logs are
floated to the Mills. The most impor
tant points at which the lumber trade
is carried on, are the several Seaports
along the coast, though there arc some
line mills a’ong the Rail Roads and
Rivers which furnish a considerable
quantity ot choice lumber for shipment,
lint the most extensive e.\| ortalion
takes place from Jacksonville (on the
Si. John's River.) and Fernandina
(on Amelia Island,) at which
place there arc generally in port Own
lltleen to twenty vessels, either taking
or waiting for cm goes. They carry
from three to five hundred thousand
feet per cargo. The annual exports
of Lumber from Florida to both coast
wise and foreign ports amount to
millions of dollars, but &s I am not in
possession of statistics I will not at
tempt to give figures.
Rail Road Ciosstics are becoming
auotliei profitable article of commerce:
foreign as well as Northern Rail
Leads being supplied from here. And
Iroin the.same exhaustless magazine of
commercial wealth, vast quantities of
Naval Stores are supplied to the
world. All along the lines ot travel
can he seen, shining above the wav
ing green the innumerable turpentine
boxes from which the crude material
is taken, and at almost every station
is a distillery to convert it into spirits
and Resin: the process being .-
pie that any sensible plantation
can conduct it, the most, common form
ofdisLiilatton is with water; to prevent
combustion, the spirits promptly rivnc
to Hu: surface of the water ami Mow
ing olfinto barrels, while the remiaiu-
iug gum constitutes the rosin. Thus
