Eld** J- B.
Notwithstanding the severe cold weath
er quite a large andien e went out to the
Baptist chnrch on Friday night last to
hear the lecture of Elder J. B. Hartwell
who, for the past seventeen years, has
been laboring in the Missionary field in
China. Being thoroughly educated and
having a sploudid delivery, it was a per
fect treat to iisteo to him. He speaks
the different d-alccts of the Chinese lan
guage very fluently, and by giving th
odd-sounding terms peculiar to the lan
guage And their interpretation, his lec
tures are made doubly interesting. His
remarks were confined, principally, to an
exposition of the religions professed by
the natives—their antipathy to receiving
Gospel truths from tli.j lips of Western
Missionaries, and the progress of mis
sionary labors.
We have not space to mention at
length the religious advancement made
m # this heatbeu land under the influence
of the ministry of the self-sacrificing
men of God who have gone to China as
representatives of different Christian de
nominations. Suffice it, that notwith
standing the idolatrous, and consequent
ly superstitious, ideas of the natives,
Bov. Mr. Hartwell told us that iu pro
portion to the means employed conver
sions were more frequent iu that coun
try than in this. This being true, how
oarefml should we be to uphold aud sup
tboae wJu go there to labor.
We hope Mr. Hartwell may find it
convenient to return to Thomson and
lecture again when the weather may be
more favorable and a larger audience
permitted to listen to him.

Messrs. Editors :
Some unmitigated scoundrel* shot and
killled the yard dog of Mr. A. J. Huff,
last Suuday night. Mr. Huff hearing
the shot ran to ths door in time to hear J
them running off. He hallooed at them !
telling them, that was the way with ;
d—u rascals, whereupon, they fired at j
him, the ball striking the mantel-piece, j
narrowly missing his wife, who was \
sitting by the tire. It is a great pity j
but that such people corn! be detected
and handled by the law.
THE FARMERS
are all as busy a class of people as you
can strike about this time of year. I
hear of some that are through planting
corn, but the majority of them prefer to
wait until the weather moderates, ad
all danger of freezes are over. Fraall
grain that was sowed in the fall does
not look very promising as far as I have
seen. There has been a good acreage of
spring oats sowed, which I hope will do
well.
OUR POST-OFFICE,
at Dealing, is presided over by that
charming little Post Mistress, Miss
Susie Neal, so you see it is no great task
to get your mail. There is one thing
that ought to be remedied, and that is
the trouble the people of tin's section
experience in getting stamps. They
are not kept at the office, aud if you
don’t, by chance, find them at some ot
the stores, you have to wait until you find
someone going to Thomson or Harlem,
before you can get them. This is a
source of great inconvenience, and ought
to be remedied.

Cure for Glanders.
( Below we publish a remedy for glan
glauders, which is kindly furnished by
our Irieud, Mr. Benjamin T. Reese, of
this county :]
Messrs. Editors :
By your request 1 give Dr. Stewart’s
treatment for Glanders. “Bleed in the
neck will, removing about three quarts
of blood, when there is considerable in
flamation, ulceration, and enlargement
of the glanders. At any&rate, two or
three quarts of blood is a small loss to
an auimal having sixty to eighty quarts.
Have ready a strong < ecoction of tabacco,
of which put one gill in a pint of "aim
water and pour this down the bore. It
will make him very sick, but it will
affect him much less than when in health,
ami thus used is not really dangerous.
Wash out his nostrils with the tobacco
decoction weakened with water with a
soft swab or mop on the end of a stick.
Be at pains to reaoh as higli up the
nostrils with the mop as you can. The
mixture must be as hot as he can bear
it. Continue this treatment from two
to four weeks, or until a favorable
change is apparent. Use the mop in
the nose for eight or ton days ; drench
with the tobacco mixture two or thre
times at intervals of three days. Give
the florae fi* uTfffch sulphur and resin a*
you can get him to eat, for the space of
ten days. A full dose will be four ounces
of sulphur, and two of resin, both pul
verized. Let the food be light and
relaxing—grass if it is in season ; if not,
boiled roots thickened with shorts, and
salted. A quantity of salt should be
plasod where the auiiuai c uld keep
himself. Attend promptly to disinfect
ing yotir stable. Fumigate it with to
bacco-smoke w'hiile the horse is in it.
Malic him and all his companions inhale
as much of the smoke as you can. Fill
the stable with smoke until you can no
longer remain in it yourself. Wash every
part of it, and especially the mangers,
with strong tobacco water, and keep
poundod tobacco leaves in every feeding
place used by any horse that lias been
exposed to the disease. ”

Will Reynolds, in tlioae College days,
When Youth and joy were laughing
?rieuds ;
On wi ose remembrance fancy plays
Aid all its fascination lends,
We met, and friendship, quickly grown,
Its charms about your presence threw.
For none who won it, e’er have known
Thau yours, a soul more firmly true.
Will Reynolds, chance and change have
come,
And both arc struggling with the
world ;
And mid our many idols some
Have in the dust been rudely burled ;
But still, when evening round me steals,
I feel the magic of the hour,
Aud memory floats o’er faded fields
To meet thee iu her moonlit bower.
Will Reynolds, life is like the sea,
With angry billows, seething waves,
And envy’s petrel sings with glee
When dearest hopes find darkest
graves ;
But oft, when peace asserts its sway,
One’s breast with old time feeling
glows;
As Twilight stills the noise of day
And dewdrops tremble on the rose.
