Dkakino. Oa., July 12, 1879.
Kdifor Journal:
In your issue of the 2nd of July. I
referred to a rumor ther. in circula
tion in regard to Mr. James Clary
i)d the supposed killing of a negro
woman. I am creda'dy informer]
that such is not the fact, and, not
wishing to do Mr. Clary au injustice,
I take pleasure in oorrtotiiTg this
mistake. lam very reliably inform
ed that Dr. Bailey says alio died of a
tnoior in the Ride, and I am v@fy sor
ry that I did Mr. Clary this wrong.
Tim Komlh of July is a day that
will b long remembered by the
Dei/ringites, It was one of the gayest'
days that has been down here since
the days of Stephens, Toombs and
Cobb. Hut wo have another Toombs
in the parson of Mr. Steph -u Paul.
He was the orator of the day, and on
such he filled the bill to perfection.
He was introduced to the audience
by Mr. Henry Philips, iu on** of his
most happy modes, and I can say ho
is one of the bc-t hands yen can hud
for that business if yon will let him
stand outside of about three quarts of
Davy’s tftogle-leg.
Well, Mr. Paul commenced at the
battle of Valh y Forge, and related
all the hardships aud adventures ofj
our forefathers down to York Town,
w here Oeergo t o HI. acknowledged,
through Lord Cornwallis, our Inde
neodopoo. He referred- in tho most
fooling terms to our late unploiuniiit
ness among miraelvtw, and uid pre
dict a bug and prosperous reign of
tho Jeffersonian Dem* cracy. He
paid a glowing tributo to Messrs.
Steplieus and Hill, and wound lip by j
nominating Thurman, of Ohio, for
Pi* ftiduut in 1880, and Lin election by
no overwhelming majority. Every
thing passed off us “liappy as a mar
riage bell."
Lewis has tntide his appearance in
our town again, iu rather a dilapida
ted condition, One of his front tires
was off, and Iwo ol the spokes were
broken out. Dr. Usry has luketi him
in charge, and lam informed ho is
improving.

It is said that anew mail will bo

sure that sueh a mail will be of little

people of I.nieoln, and we fail to see
how it will he of any importance to
the peeple of Elberton or any other
section. What we want is a Satur
day mail from I.incoluton to Olay
Hill. There arc already three mails
a week from Clay Hill to Thomson,
and all that is needful to have three
a week from Liueolnton to Clay
Hill is unity of action. If we Imd a
Saturday mail those who wish to jo
so could take a daily paper, bcsiJes
it would be a great convenience in

The Athens District C inference
convened in Washington on Wedues

pleasure of attending until the last
days we can only give an ontliue of
the proceedings. The attendance of
delegates was not so large as was ex

zeal and earnestness that made tip

We spent Friday night with Mr.
