While Gubernatorial nominations
are in order, we rise to suggest the
name of the Hon. Peterson Thwentt.
If be is onoe nominated he will keep
on running till he is elected.
We sre glad to lesm that Brinkley
Academy, in Warren county, is in a
very flourishing condition. Undur
the able xml experiene and guidance of
our frien 1, Prof. B. G. Brinkley, the
popularity and success of the Institu
tion are far surpassing the hopes of
its most sanguine friends.
The Jasper Centennial iu Bavsnnnh
wss a grand affair. There were 37
rmirtsi y cmnpaiiifls and 30,000 |aio|il<i

ed an eloquent oration. The edition
ol tho Savannah News, gotten up on
the occasion, was a marvel of excel-i

credit on tlm energy and skill of Mr.

The Augusta Evening News has s

CROWDED.
OuV columns are ngnin so mnch
crowded tins week that we are (sun
polled to ooutraet our reading matter
to very onnpw iinuts, und ount many
interesting communications mid n
number of editorials and locals. By
next week, however, we ex|M‘ct to is
sue a large and handsome Supple
ment, which will vastly relieve the
pressure ou our columns.
In the meantime, while the chronic
grumbler is complaining because, [or
a few weeks, lie dims not got us much
reading mutter us usual, wo are glad
to say that our subscripitiou list is
rapidly increasing.
THE LEGISLATURE.
'flio General Assembly, after n long
mill important session, will in jotirn
to-day, They have performed an
immense amount of labor, character
ized, in the main, by an earnout de
sire to benefit the people and to leg
islate fur the good of the entire State.
They deserve, and we hope will re
ceive, the thnnks of the country and
the praiae of their constituent!*. For
their labors in the inveatigationa of
State officials and the impeachment
triala of the same, they are entitled
to eepeoial commendations, although
a number ot their ncta are almost
unamimously condemned by the peo
ple and tho proas. For instance :
They impeached Goldsmith, Gomp
trollor-Gei oral, Convicted and degrad
ed him from the high end glorious
right* of citizenship.
They investigated Nelma, Keeper
of the Penitentiary, found Hint he
bought himself into ofllcc and then
used Ilia oflloinl authority to enforce
what lie claimed to boa private con
tract, by which ho extorted money
from contractors fur services lie never
tendered.
They impeached Treasurer Renfroo
and found that he had received and
appropriated to ilia own use and that
of his securities a large amount of
iutcrcst on the public fund, which
was a plain violation of tho law and
tile Constitution w lncli bo lmd sworn
to support. lie confessed his guilt
aud offered to refund the money, and
gave as nil excuse that lie wax igno
rant of the law. Ignorance of tho
law is tie excuse, even for tho most
illiterate negro; and it does seem
that a mini holding as high an office
as Reufroe should hardly escape on
attoh a plea. Aud according to Gen.
Toombs lie did not, for seventeen
8 nature asserted by their votes that
they didu't believe biui oil oath, and
voted Inm not guilty, It is Into
there were tweuty-fivo other Senators
who voted him guilty, but it requires
two-tbirda to convict.
There are several ugly iuoonsistcu
riJes in llftws proceedings which will
have to be explained by the >ueu who
ore responsible for them before Hie
wrath of their point) mute cun bo
assuaged.

Editor Journal:
I thought I would have nothing to
say this week, but when 1 see how
things are moving around in many
directions I feel constrained to let the
public know about it. The saddest
of all is the departure of one of Abbe
ville’s most lovely belles, Miss Mary
J. Ed mn in Is, to Elliertou ou a viait to
her ancle, I)r. Henry Edmonds. And
the nice part is that she gave us a
very pleasant little pop call Indore
abe left, and Ordered the JocnNAi,
sent to her.
Mr. J. W. Jennings has bought the
Peter Smith place from .Mr, J. B.
Holloway, who, with Mr. W. O.
Hturkey is opening one of the best
selection of goods ever seen in these
parts. Now, just subscribe for the
Jouknai, if you want to be si ecessfnl
with your rags. Mr. W. Atcherson,
of Elberten, has been visiting his
many frieudu in this section. The
little fellow has lattened up until
yon would hardiy know him. Ho
also subscribed for the Joiiunai,.
Messrs. C and 11. went to the Court
house this week. I didn’t know Ibis
was Court week. Kov. Mr. Elwell
and Dallis both have new horses,
" wii I sir.
i Mr. .1. L. Corley is very sick.
Hope he will soon be up. Mr. Jno.
| Cox, our clever Englishman, had a
congestive oliill u few days ago, a> and
came near dying. Rv. Elweil is car
rying on quite on interesting meeting
ut Liberty.
W heard Smith's gin toot this
evening about a mile off. It reminds
its of the coming of our railroad.
Miss Lucy Thomas and Miss Georgia
MnPherriri, of Liberty Hill, were in
town yesterday, trading with iJullis.
Bet they got cheated. Capt. J. P.
Blackwell has his thing that shells
the seed out of cotton iu the Bor
deaux section, and is tooting ami
shelling out about 8 bales a day. It
makes u capital sample. Try it.
Mr. 0. ale a largo quantity ol syrup

Rev. Adams was, on last Sat

Mr. G. W. Furguson happened to
a very painful accident last week, the
particulars of which are these: He
nils ginning some Cotton, and iu at
tempting to brush some seed from
the gin just under the saws, ho acci
dentally had his left hand caught,
and completely lacerated from the
elbow to tho tip of the fingers, Kis
nii Idle finger was sawed off at tho
aecond joint. Dr. Furguson dressed
the wound and at present writing
Gum is getting on tolerably well. Ho
had his sleeves rolled up at the time,
or his arm would doubtless have been
torn off to his shoulder.
