Mre. Hall, of Clayton, Ga., la hav
ing a second crop of large, well
developed, delicious strawberries.
The cholera has reached the great
city of Paris, and is rapidly spread
ing among the lower classes of the
|>rople.
On Friday night of last week Pa
latka, Florida, wus almost entirely
destroyed by fire. The losses are
estimated at SBOO,OOO.
Mr. Geo. A. Hill, of Columbia
county, lost by fire last week, his
gin house and mur.hinery, 25 kales
of cotton and about 1,000 bushels
of wheat and oats.
A lover of curious statistics has
discovered that a single b'ock of
tenement houses in the city of New
York, contains 7,000 people, and is
the most densely crowded spot on
earth. Some of the houses are 12
stories high.
In the matter of cotton picking.
Henry Jlowles, of Woodvilie, this
Stair, is entitled to the blue ribbon,
lie is 71 years old, and recen'ly ho
picked in ono day 525 pounds of
sen! cotton.
Mr. Oallaher, the popular and ge
niti! agent of the Augusta Chronicle,
paid us a brief visit last week. He
possesses all of the qualifications
for eminent success, and represents
n journal of sterling merits and wide
influence.
Georgia and the balance of tlio
world ought to thank and praise the
Atlanta Constitution for filling the
last gap in Southern journalism.—
That progressive journal now issues
s (taper everyday in the week. Hur

The late fall and tho warm weath
er havo caused fruit trees and vege
tables to attempt a second crop in
aoie portions of the Stale. A peach
tree in Colib county and a plum
trea in Marietta are in full bloom.
In Chattahoochee county, on Sun
day last, Charlie Koohp, a negro boy,
shot and killed Parry Shelton, n ne
gro man. Reese was admiltod to
bail in the sum of S2OO, from which
it would seem tlist he must havo
been justifiable in killing Shelton.
Last weak the Augusta, Gibson
and Sandersville railroad company
commenced laying the rails on their
toad in Augusta. The success of
this road, considering the hard
tunes, is something wonderful.
In Chattanooga, on Tuesday last.,
the dead l>ody of a while child was
found sewed up in a Hack filled with
rock, lying in the edge of a pond.
The head of the child wa* cruahed
and badly mangled. The only duo
to the crime is the shoe tracks of a
woman in the mud, near where the
child was found.
Id the recent election, Dr George
E Reeves was the Democratic can
didate for Congre-a in the 4th Vir
ginia District, but he died in the
morning of election day. If he had
lived a few hours longer he would
have been mortified at his defeat by
the heavy negro vote of his District.
The most successful experiment
with the telephone yet reported was
recently had in Europe. A eonver
ration was held at night betweou Ht.
Petersburg and Hologne, a distance
of 2.405 uii.es. The day is not far
oft' when conversations will be had i
bet ween New York and London by |
tJte nme means.
The lrwinton Appeal says that
Mr. Wm. Vinson, living about six
milts from that town, on Moudiy
ldglif last, discovered his yard dog
wi ll aomethiDg in his mouth, which,
on examination, he found to he the
1 *ody of a newly bom white infant,
with its lower extremities terribly
lnurilated. He took the little form
into his house and washed and pro
jiatred it for the coroner’s inquest.
In Lincoln county, on the 13th
• nat, Air. Boots Mathews and Miss
Auoie Lyon were married; and on
the 11th instant. Elder T. B. West '
officiating, Mr. Ed Gray and Miss
Donna l.'bamblin. both of Columbia '
county, were joined in the holy I
bonds of matrimony. The Jochnai '
tenders most hearty congratulations
and good wishes
Since the recent election, St John,
the Prohibition candidate for Presi
dent, has been burned in effigy in
the town of bis residence in Kansas,
and in Vermont and New York. His
vote throughout the Union amount
ing to Almost nothing, aud the buasl
of nis supporters that the result of
ui* oativass would astonish the
world was certainly verified. pra

Geo. T. Jackson, late President < f
the Enterprise Factory, Augusta,
whose di-astrous failure was an
nounced several weeks ago, has been
indicted in Richmond Superior
Court in four cases of embaizlement,
amounting in the aggregate to
$150,229. He was amsted and ad
mitted to bail on bonds of $4,000 in
each case, and will l>e tried at an
adjourned term J. C. C. Black and
Judge Twiggs are his attorneys.
'lbs Sumter Republican has the
following curious item, which calls
for ths investigation of the learned:
On one night last week a crack
opened across the let of Col B. B.
1 Hinton, in this city, taking the well
in its course. The well is 100 feet
deep and was flush in water at 8
o’clock of the day the crock wss no
ticed, but the water all left the well
through this fissure, ft is near 200
yards in length, crossing Ed Brown's
snd Mrs. E'arn’s lots and into Cem
etery street, and is about two inch
es wide in some places. Is it drying
of the ground or shall we look for
a gu-h of lava soon T
Our esteemed friend, Mr. T. B.
Hollenshead, of Lincolnton, write
us announcing the burning of the
town of McCormick, S. C., on tho
Augusta and Knoxville railroad. I he
fire originated from a heating stove
and was discovered about midnight
of the 13th inst. The losses are es
timated at $50,000, with little insu
rance. Wo deeply regret to add
that Mr. A. A: 'Biewurt, recently of
the Central Hotel, Augusta, who
had roceutly opened a store at Mc-
Cormick, was among the heaviest
losers.
In Byron, this State, on Thursday
of last week, a horrible accident oc
curred. A negro woman named
I-ixzie Dickson was burning brush
on the site for the new Baptist
church, when her clothing caught
on fire aud was completely burned
off of her before assistance arrived.
She lingered until this morning,
when she died. Her limbs wore
completely charred by the fire.
The wonderful success which lias
attended the boring of artesinn wells
in different portions of the Stale is
calculated to encourage many other
towns to undertake them. Bruns
wick has just finished boring her
second well, with very satisfactory
results. Tho flow is 400 gallons per
minute of pure, clear, delicious wa
ter. The two wells now furnish 130
gallons a day to each of the 5,000
iuhabitauts of the city.
Macon had somowhut of a sensa
tion last week. A painter of that
city, named John C. Donald, was
discovered to be a higgiunist aud a
reckless ono at that. It seems that
he first married Mrs. Mary Broad
hurst, of Terre Haut, lud., about 12
yours sgo, and last Msreh he mar
ried Mrs. Mary Abenetliy. of Mu
con. Both wives are ami have been
living in Macon for sometime with
in two hundred yards of each other,
aud in blissful ignorance of the de
ception being practiced upon them.
Donald has been arrested and plac
ed in jail.
Near Oconee, Ga., on Tuesday
night of last week, Allen Burnett, a
negro man about 40 'years old,
who resided on Mr W. G. Wood’s
plantation, was run over by the cars
and completely riddled, the curs
carrying him 400 yards, cutting him
into fifty or seventy-five pieces. The
dead body was found this morning
by a colored man. Parts of the
dead man were to be found upon
both sides of the track and the
beasts feeding themselves upon hitu.
He was drunk. Tho spot smelt with
whiskey. About eight or ten trains
passed over him during the night.
