Explanatory.
Mb Editdb :
Whan I made use. in my communication
of kst week of the expression, “I am satis
fied that both are Democrats at heart, but
Third partyites from policy,” alludiug to
the two Third party members of the Board
of Education, as constituted when I was
made Commissioner, it was as far as could
possibly be from my intention to wrong ei
ther one or auybody else I could not have
meant it in any offensive sense, because
both parties are very highly esteemed and
ong time personal friends, notwithstanding
oar politicol difference*. I simply aud on
ly meant to emphasize the fact that so far
from my having been elected as a Third
party man, my linpressiou was that Third
party sentiment was very weak in the
Board
I feel that this explanation is due since I
learn i hat someone has used my statement
as a cudget to strike a man whom 1 love
and esteem, when I never intended it for a
weapon for any one, bat simply to set my
self right before the public.
Iu the near future, with your kind per
mission, I will call attention to some of the
fundamental laws of Political Economy, the
violation of which underlies ou presen)
financial condition, and will suggest what
occurs to me as the only permanent remedy.

Punished the Boys.
At one period in the history of the
University of Kansas a secret society
broke into being. The boys composing
it wore a badge consisting of the letters
“T. C.,” at least two inches long,
wrought out of new tin. No one could
guess what the object of the society
might be. until it became evident that
turkeys were mysteriously disappearing
from various localities.
Thus the matter ran on until, in an
nnlucky hour, the boys raided the poul
try yard of Judge Nelson Stephens.
Now, the judge was not a man to be
trifled with; he six>n detected the rognoa
, and resolved forthwith to punish them
in his own peculiar way.
\\ ithout mentioning the discovery
outside his own family, he politely in
vite*! all the “T. C.'s** tosuppor. They
were delighted with the invitation and
accepted it forthwith. The judge re
ceived them most cordially, and kept
them in a roar with funny storios until
supper was announced. Still shaking
with laughter, the guests were shown
into the dining room aud assigued their
places.
On the plate of each "T. C." was a
huge tnrkeyi The judge begged his
guests to help themselves, and went on
with his funny stories as if he were
accustomed to serve his guests with
whole turkeys every day in the year.
The boys were in torture; they could
neither eat nor listen. The judge, how
ever, too polite to notice their embar
rassment, simply urged them to eat, and
kept on with his stories. Thus did he
“roast” the boys as thoroughly as they
had ever roasted his turkeys.
That very night the disconsolate "Tur
key Catchers” disbanded, and theii
badges wore seen no more.
A Street Magician.
The following account of nn amusing
adventure is vouched for by the highly
respectable gentleman to whom the in
cident occurred. “I was walking down
one of the principal streets of Ban Fran
cisco on a windy afternoon, when a sud
den gust of wind lifted my high silk hat
; (for I had been making some visits and
was clothed in my best) and sent it spin
; uing down the street. Of course I started
! at once in pursuit; but before I could
| reach it my unfortunate tile was picked
j up by a gentlemanly looking person who
| was apparently about to return it to me
j with a lx)w, when he suddenly
l claimed, T beg your pardon, allow me?’
and he drew out of my hat a cabbage.
•‘ ‘This is very odd,’ he continued, as
i the half dozen idle>rs who had been
! watching the proceedings drew near,
j but really, my dear sir'—drawing out
| a bunch of carrots—‘this must bo very
| uncomfortable’—extracting half a dozen
; big beets—'‘and M'on cannot surely put
such tb.ing.i as these on your head,’ and
he held up, amid the laughter of the
crowd, a rabbit, who kicked violently as
he was held aloft by the ears. Rather
annoyed at the publicity of the enter
tainment. I finally succeeded in captur
ing my hat. ami the magician, followed
by a small crowd, took his way up the
street ready to play his tricks upon any
other likely subject.”—New York Trib
