Jona Haevet Hull, Enquire, until recently n
member of the ber in this county, and well and
taeoembly known to all our citizens, died in Rich
mood county on the 29th iretant, alter a brief
illneee. At the time of hie death he was engag
ed in the practice of bis profession in the city of
.Augusta. He was a lawyer of good standing
and gare promise of a life creditable to himself
and useful to his fellowmen. His many noble
traits of character and popular manners had en
deared him to all with whom he was associated
in life; and both in Augusta and here, many
warm friends will sincerely mourn his untimely
death. His remains were brought to this place
for interment.
G. G. Eowusdsos, a young man ol this place,
employed in the Steam Mill and Workshops of
W. L. Ktooon II Callan, near the depot, was
caught in the belting of the machinery, on
yesterday morning, while endeavoring to adjust
the circular saw, and severely and dangerously
hurt Hts right leg was badly fractured both
above and below the knee, and his head and
back contused to an extent not yet ascertained.
Hi was carried around the shaft several times
by the revolving wheels, and the miracle is that
he escaped with a spark of life in his body. His
condition is critical, though there are strong
hopes of his surviving the injury.

be the same as they were before the war, owing
to the scarcity of money. Mi one knows better

iNDirvaauiT Comm-imest.—The Editor of the
Atlanta Intelligence heard on last Snbbath an
excellent Sermon from Rev. W. T. Beantlbv,
pastor of the 2d Baptist Church of that city.-
And noticing it, uses the following:
"A simple teat from the Bible, seemingly se
lected at rumlotu, without previous reflection,
afforded him a theme to dwell upon so eloquent
ly that his audience were held spell bound du
ring the hour consumed by him.”
According to our creed, that is but an indiffer
ent compliment to iht distinguished Minister.—
If he selected his tent at random and preached
without previous leflectinn, this time, it is the
first time within our knowledge He could neV
er have been the great and good man he is if tha 1
were his practice.
Wcxklt roa Bovs and Gians.—J. W. Burke

two dollars a year. It will be just ihe paper
for the young people, and we advise all who cun,
North or South to scud for it. Enclose $2 in a
latter, direct it plainly to J. W. Burke A Cos.,

(Caors. —The wheat crop has probably escaped
any general or serious injury from the rust, and
is now beginning to be ready for the cradle.—
Oats are good everywhere, so far as we can learn,
and some few persons will harvest the oat and
wheat crope together. The country will heave
a great sigh of relief when these two crops come
io, to eke out the scanty cribs of corn. Cotton is
doing fairly, these last few hot dayr, backward
though, aud in sopie cases complaints of poor
stands.
Corn also has been brought out by the warm
weather, looks green, and is setting out to grow.
Coel weather in the earlier part of the season
and rather bad standsat first, have made the crop
irregular, and small; but a bit of Juoe weather,
if it does not turn to be too dry, will remedy the
difficulty, and give us promise of bri ad in abun
dance. May tbe God of the seasons grant the
fulfilment of tbe promise,
California has forwarded $47,000 in gold for
the relief of tbe South.

The editor disoour-es on “Algernon Sydney’s
Writings on Liberty.” Besides these, there are
a number of interesting literary articles, togetfa
witha piece of poetry by Paul H. Hayne. All
who desire to unde-stand the ideas of liberty, os

Hobbible Accident. —Two young girls and a

a lamp from the can, the negro ►tamling by with
a lightwnod torch, when the oil became ignited
and there was an instant explosion, blowing out
both heads of the can, and completely satura
