A GEORGIAN WHO BUCCEKOS IN
WASHINGTON.
The Georgia democrat who came
early to Waahiugtou far an office,
who Instead of waiting around till
all his Hioney wss used up, went to
work, is doing well. “Them men in
the market,” said lie, who offered to
set me up, hold to their bargain, bull
thought it might be a little risky,
considering the reason; so, to be on
the safe side, I put in the bank the
$lOOl made, after sending more mon
ey to my wife than she ever *aw lie
fore, and I went to work at day wa
ge*. I got a dollar at first driving a
team for building contractors, but
when they suw how handy I was
with llie mules, they raised my wa
ges toll 25 a day. Part of the time I
do night work at the iutnlier factories
and get 75 cents more. lin handy at
that business. Bometitnes I gel more’n
|2 a day, one day and another, ami
live bcllor’n I ever did in my life.
By fall I’ll have a right smart sum
atiead, as much a* SBOO, I reckon;
and then wife and boy will bid good
by to Georgia and coaiohere. They’d
come sooner only they’re got a power
ol melons In and’ll made a heap, if
nothing happens, out o( the crop. 1
reckon none of the crowd who came
up for an office feel as well as I do.
None of l hem ha* got anofllce yet as 1
can hear, and most of them got home
a lcap wiser than wuen they came.
Come to look at it, It’s the darmicst,
meatiest business a well man ever did,
trying to gel an office. Cleveland
Just serve* them right by not giving
it to them They are not til tor it,
and they’d all be a heap better off by
going to work somewhere where
there's money te be made, and that
is right here in Washington, if they'd
stop drinking whisky. There’s a
man that's been here tor the po-l
office In my town, liiai Is, ray town
that was,for It isn’t anymore aa soon as
my wile and tlie boy get away in the
fall, and lie’s spent already more than
a year’s salary will come to, and he
won’t got it either; for my wife writes
me that another fellow lias got the
pa|M‘rson (lie Republican postmaster;
that is, lie's got up them charges you
say they wunt ami is going to get it.
The other fellow when h finds it out
will he triad enough, and there’ll be a
big row in tlie Democratic party all
through there. Who care* fer that?
I’ve got more money than I ever lutd
but on:et, and that was the year
when the grubs killed all the water
melons In our district but wine, which
lias never happened since; and I’m
going to have my wifu here, and (lie
lmy is going to liavo an education
if it can be had in the District of
Columbia.”
The recent census of Washington
contains few better citizens than that
man.
PAPER BKDCLOTHING.
iPrttm th Ppr Maker.)
A paper-making firm in New Jersey
lias for several week* been tuniingoui
connterpanea ami pillow cases of pa
per. No 1 imiuilla paper is used, two
large sheets being held together by a
slender twine at intervals of three or
tour inches. The twin*' is gummed,
so as to hold the sheets firmly togeth
er where it lies. A Item is placed on
the counterpane to keep it from tear
ing ; the safety edge is composed of
twine. Ornamental designs are
stamped on the outer surface of the
covers and cases, giving them a neat,
attractive appearance.
When these counterpanes and pil
low-cases become wrinkled from use
they can easily be smoothed out with
a hot flatiron. The counterpanes can
be teflon the bed when it is occupied
and in cold weather will tie found a
warm covering, preventing the escape
ol heat. The now paper bedrlothing
is seventy-live cents per set and will
probably become popular.
I-ast Sunday, in the upper portion
of Jones i-< >ll ■>t v. a lady asked her lie
bit lid to accompany her t church.
He declined to do so on tile ground
that lie would have the baby to carry.
The wile went without her husband
but with instruction from him that
she was not to go to the house ot a
certain neighbor. The wife returned
in the afternoon and luting asked by
her husband it she had been to said
Utighbor's house,replied that she had.
At this the husband became indig
nant and struck at her with a song
book, from which he was pouring
forth melodious strains. Then he
caught her b\ the arms and made her
slap herself with her own hands un
til she began to cry. sin then left
and went to her father's house. Next
day tho husband, in company with
another man, sent to the house and
carried off the little it-mouths-old
child. The mother took out a writ-of
habeas corpus tor the child, and a
warrant for her husband for wife
whipping. Ilm everything was set
tled Wednesday, and all went home
peaceable.
COOKING TOM THE PRESIDENT,
Ths White House Kitchen, Its Personnel
end the Way Thing* u* Dons in It.
(From the Weehingtofi Poet.)
In the basement of the White House
on the north side, are situated the
kitchen, laundry and bea rooms of
the President* household. A French
cook presides in the kitchen and all
his surroundings are as neat as could
be imagined. There was not a speck
of dirt visible when a Post reporter
went through the room one day lust
week and the chef, as lie delights to
be called, was anxious to point out all
the details of hi* department.
Very little trouble has been exper
ienced under the change of adminis
tration and the President has not
manifested any disapproval of the
delicate dishes prepared for him uy
the cook of liis predecessor. Inclu

vants in the employ of the President,

ity to employ assistants. It would
be difficult to find brighter tins Or
cleaner china than there are on the
shelves of the White House, and the
floors in the basements a.c bleached
white from constant applications of
soap and sand. The kitchen is in the
northwest angle of the White House
under the vestibule, aud the sleeping
rooms are adjacent, facing north.
They art: net generally occupied, for
tlie help at the White House have the
privilege of going home at night ami
only only on rare occasions do they
use their rooms.
The steward and ilia assistants in
wailing upon the President and his
guests always wear swallow-tailed
coals, black trousers ami while veals
and everything must tie scrupulously
clean about a waiter before he is a!
lowed to go into the private dining
room. As last as a course is ready
for the table it is sent up from the
kitchen on a dumb waiter, which is
in a recess back of the ante rotjtii on
the right ot the principal entrance to
the While House. Inquiry among
the oldest servants of the Executive
Mansion revealed the fact that none
of them had ever seen a rat nbuiit the
house, although there are no cats or
dogs on the premises. Even the
kitchen and store room arc free and
always liavo been from these pests,
although the building is hall a cen
tury old. On state occasions or foi
a large reception the corps of assist
ants to 'he cook Is increased, and men
cooks are always employed. There
is plenty of room at the large range
for all, and there is no coniuaion. no

The Fearful Extent to Which Intemper

(Loudon letter lu the New York Trlegram.l
No sadder spectacle presents Itselt to
the eye of the stranger visiting the
metropolis of England, if not of the
world, than that ot its thousands ol
unfortunate women addicted to the
use of intoxicating liquors. In itselt
the mere habit on the part of females
of drinking brandy, gin or whisky
is bad enough, but when tlie habit is
carried to the extreme of drunkenness
it transforms God's noblest and most
beautiful creation into something
even below the beasts. Walk along
fleet street,go slowly along t fie Strand
or anv one of the many streets, lanes
and alleys crossing those two great
arteries at right angles, lr.k into any
ol tho beer or whisky shops at any
hour of the day or night and count
ihe souls there. You will find more
women than men—women with ba
bies at the breast, young girls front
sixteen up, old women with bloated
faces and every tender lineament of
their sex blotted from their counten
ances b. the brutalizing agency of al
cohol: c'd women, too, scare! ly able
to stand from the combined effects of
age and dissipation.
It is a horrible spectacle,onewhirh I
have never seen in any oilier part of
the world. These poor female
wretches huddled together outside
the bai in small rooms ten feet square
perhaps, imbibing the soul poison
from morn till night, cheering eaeli

neglecting all tlie duties of woman

pennies or ha* pence, as the case may
lie, reeling out into the busy street

A. S. Flandnan & Cos., of this city,
the designers and builders of the
landau and victoria sold to the Presi
dent, should be given credit for the
excellency of their workmanship
which has rarely if ever been equalled.
The landau is full-sized, leather
topped and extremely plain. The en
tire can iage is painted dark green and
tile upholstering is of the finest ami
green iti color, and the ornamentation
is of the simplest, us every tiling is
finished in black rubber, wit Is a little
silver band about tho edge.
There is u total absence of anything
gaudy or unnecessary, and no mono
gram or crest is seen on the panel,
while the design aimed at seems to lie
.t plainness that docs not attract while
securing mechanical excellence and
personal comfort. The victoria is ol
the same modest design, and is the
embodiment of good taste and neat
ness. The harness, which was design
ed by this firm, is also a marvel. It
is mounted with black rubber, trim
med with silver, and the only orna
ment is a modest monogram “G. C."
on the rosette of tlie bridle.
This turnout is perhaps the finest in
the United Slates, and Albert, Ihe
president's coachman, will have rea
