An lllnslralctl Muni lily Journal, universally aJiiiilled l

Representative ami Champion of Ameiican Tisle.
Xot for Wale in Hook or Xo\v Store*.
THE ALDINE, while with nil llu
regularity, hint none of the temporary or timely
interort characteristic of ordinary periodical# —
It 1? an elegant miseullany of pure, light, amt
graceful literature j and a culluetion of pictures,
the rarest spocimens of artistic skill, In black
aud white. Although each succeeding number
affords a fresh pleasure to its friends, the real
value and beauty of The Aldine will be most ap
preciated nftor it has been bound up at the eloso
of the year. Whilo other publications may claim
superior cheapncM, as compared with rivals of n
similar class, The Aliline is a uniuue ami original
conception— alone and unappronened — absolutely
withoi# competition in priee or character. Tho
possessor of a complete volume cannot duplicate
the quantity of fine paper and eiigra. ings in any
other shape, or number of volumes, fur ten times
its cost; and then , there are the rhromns , besides!
AUT I* 6 JP^VI^TIVCEISIT.
Notwithstanding tho increase in the price of
subscription last Fall, v hen The Aldine assumes
it# present noble proportions and representative
character, the e-alU.m teas mare than doubted \

the gnirc friends of The Aldine.
. . puhli.-aers are authorited to aunounoe de
signs from many of the most eminent artists in
America
In addition, The Aldine will reproduce ex
amples of the best foreign masters, selected with
a view to the highest artistic success, and great
est general interest; avoiding such us have be
come familiar, through photographs, or copies
of any kind.
The quarterly tinted plates, for 1871? will re
produce four of John S. Davis’ inimitable child
sketches, appropriate to the four seasons. These
plates, appearing in the issues for January,
April, July, and Oetobor, would be alone north
the price of a year’s subscription.
The popular feature of a copiously illustrated
“Christmas” number will bo continued.
To possess such a valuable epitome of the art
world at a cost so trilling, will command the
subscriptions of thousands in every section of
the country ; but, as the usefulness and attrac
tions of The Aldine can be enhanced, in propor
tion to the numerical increase of its supporters,
tho publishers propose to make “assurance doubly
dure,” by the following unparalleled offer of
Premium Chrnmog for 1873.
Kvery subscriber to The Aldine, who pays in ad
vance for the year 1873, wilt receive, without addi
tional charge, a pair of beantifnt oil cliromos, after
•T. J. Hill, the efniuent English painter. The pic
tures, emitted “The Village Relict,” and “Crossing
the Moor,” are 14x20 Inches—are printed from 25
different plates, requiring 25 impressions and tints
to perfect each picture. The same ehromos are
sold for S3O per pair in the art stores. As it is the
determination of its conductors to keep The Aldine
out of tho reach of competition in every deport
ment, the ehromos will ire found corresponding!}
ahead of any that eau be offered by other periodi
cals. Every subscriber will receive a certificate,
over the signature of the publishers, guaranteeing
that the ehromos delivered shall be eons! to the
samples furnished the agent, or the money will lie
refunded. The distribution of pictures of this grade,
free to the subscribers to a five dollar periodical,
will mark an epoch in tho history of Art ; amt, con
sidering the unprecedented cheapness of the price
for The Aldine itself, the marvel falls little short of
a miraclo, even to those eet acquainted with the
.achievements of inventive genius and Improved
mechanical appiiam es. (For illustrations of these
ehromos, see S'ivember issue of The Aldine.
The Literary Department
will continue under the care of Mr. Richard Util

of the day, who will strive to have the literature of
