TI MLIN'S REMARKABLE PLAN.
To THr. Editors of the Herald:
I, with many cthers.read with pleasure your piomp
reply to the proposition of Mr. Tomlin’s published,
and aB I thiDk sanctioned by the Constitution. As
you say, it is the most absurd proposition I have yet
overboard advanced. Does not any one know that
♦ lie farmer makes money when he gets 1.") cents for his
cotton, and whether he does or not, is it not hia duty
as an honorable man to meet liis obligations at matu
rity, if it be possible for him to do so? Tbe mer
chants have to meet their bank notes promptly or tlieir
credit is gone; and I will venture to say not one
farmer out ot t« n expected to get over 15 cents for his
cotton when be purchased the surplies to make it.
I am glad to see a new spaper that will speak what it
honestly thinks as the Herald does! Long may it '
prosper. Yours,
Merchant, j

MAJOR JOHN C. WHITNER.
Wc have before referred to this gentleman, the
oldest and one of the most reliable insurance men in
this country. Heretofore we have spoken of him
when we wished to call attentton to his advertisement,
and hence what we have said about him has had the
appearance of bcin.? a paid puff; but
speak the honest sentiment of our heart.
From one of the oldest and best families of this
country, Major Whitucr is instinctively, aud in every
fibre of liis soul, a gentleman. He is, therefore, re
liable. Those having business with him may confide
implicitly in his statements and pledges. Ho has de
voted his time and his talents from the time of the
completion of his education to tho subject aud prac
tice of insurance, and th«rc aro few, if any, men in
this country who understand the subject better Iban
he docs. Ho lias insured millions of property and
paid out hundreds of thousands of dollars on losses;
and never yet his there been tho slightest trouble re
sisting from bis preparation of his policies.
His knowledge, therefore, renders him ouo of the
very safest men to entrust such business to.
And last, Major Whitner has good reliable compa
nies, which are able to pay and prompt and just iu
settlements. We hope every person who has ever
given him insurance heretofore will continue it with
him. If he says your property is safe in bis compa
nies, rely upon it as true. To all our people we say,
give him your confidence and your patronage.

THE OPENING NIGHT AT DkGIVE'S.
DtGivfc’a Opera House will le opened on the nigh
of the 20th instant by John Ford, of Baltimore. He
will bring a splendid Company, and play “The Ice
Witch,” a sensation, spectacular comedy. The Rich
mond Whig says of this Company:
Thf. Ice Wiich.—Notwithstanding the many other
strong attractions in the city last night. “The Ice
Witch” drew a very good crowd, filling the parquette
and orchestra chairs, presenting a goodly array of
Uahion in the dress-circle, with some in tbe tiers
above. The spectacular effects were very good, and
a'l who were not amazed were at east well pleased.
Miss Mollie Meador as “Lady Vila;" Miss Alice Wynd-
ham as “Druda;” Mrs. Duffield as “Hecla ;” Miss
Jennie Clifford as “M.nca, ’ were a bevy of beauties

that pleased all tastes. Miss Clif
ford is as 1st, rosy, merry, pretty and saucy a
and was received with applause by the audieuc
old acquaintance, though she ia by no means old.
Master Ignacio and the little Mis* who accompanied
him excited much admiration by their grace and agili
ty in dancing, posturing, etc. The Martinettis did
wonders in their grotesque feats snd tricks. But the
beet card of the pack, to tell the truth, is Mr. Charles
Stanley, who, as a comedian, singer, etc , was all that
could be demanded. He is a natural and original ac
tor, and received much well deserved applause. We
have not room for extended criticism of the perform
ance, and can only say of them as a whole tint they
are well worth seeing.

ATTENTION!!!
Let it be remembered, that the Franklin Steam
ned have been appointed a committee
to place before depositors aud the public the condi
tion of this institution. Shortly after the suspension
of the bank tbe stockholders held a meeting and ap
pointed a committee to examine aud report upon the
assets and liabilities of the concern. Ihe committee,
taking ample time to discharge that duty, have made a
report, from which we are justified in assuring depos- j n g S f or merebaat tailoring iiBlueh-
itois that there is no sort of danger of loss to them.
The stockholdere have appointed competent aud relia
ble agents to collect and dispose of tbe assets of tbe
Bank, and pay the proceeds st once to the depositors.
The assets are abundant for this purpose, and iu be
half of the Bank wc simply ask a little patience and
forbearance on tlie part of depositors, and they shall tailor iu the State
realize the last farthing of their deposits. The asset
shall be made available for their payment without de
lay. aud we ask depositors to give the agents timet
do this, and all will be right and the Bank will be in :
