FLOWER TRADE OF NEW YORK
The Retail Dealers in New York
Wedding, Funeral and Church
Decoration, &c.
From the >'uw York Post.
The sale of cat flowers and house plants at
retail in 'bis city last year, it is said, reached
the large sum of two million dollars, and
daring the present season the indications are
that the sales will be greatly in excess of
those figures. Twenty-live or thirty years
ago there weie only two or throe florists in
New York and neighborhood, and their sales
were very trifling in comparison with those
of oven the smallest dealers of the present
bridal, which is now considered almost as in- 11 CASTLEMAy,

flowers, and have on them a monogram or
desion in red, bine or green, as the fancy may
suggest.
Orders for wedding flowers run all the way
from one hundred to one thousand dollars.
For weddings as well as parties rustic stands
are loaned by the florists for decorative pur
poses. These stands arc filled with moss, and
built up with growing plants aud cut flowers.
A recent order of this kind was filled at an
expense of five hundred dollars, For these
occasions almost any design suggested by
those interested can be furnished by the flor
ists. The most expensivo wedding flowers

BROADWAY FLORISTS. THEATKICAL FLOWERS.
To-day, on Broadway alone, there are hi- j The bouquets thrown on t’uo stage on ben-

and early summer nearly all of these dealers j of buds and rare exotics are valued at eight

bedding out purposes; but for the remainder I iy dollars, and alloral ship about forty dol-
oftbe year the trade is confined almost ex-1 lars. Some of these designs, with monograms
clnsively to the sale of cut flowers and bon- 1 and words of welcome however are nmph
ooets. Of the entire trade of the flotisls of
New York at least three-qnarters is devoted
to out flowers and floral decorations. The
Kroadw y dealers, perhaps, sell more bou
quets than any others in the trade, unless
those on the Fifth avenue may be excepted.
Some of these stores do an average business
in flowers of from two to three hundred dol- j
fare a day.
THE FIFTH ATKN.'K FLOWEI.S.
Two of the largest retail dealers in flowers
and plants in the city are Hodgson, who is
now erecting a new store at the corner of
Forty-fifth street and Fifth avenue, and Sie-
brecht, whose place of business is oa the
comer of Forty-second street’ and Fifth ave
nue, just above the reservoir. Both of these
establishments have greenhouses out of towu.
Those owned by Siebrecht are situated at As
toria, as stated in a former article; and Hodg
son's are at Washington Heights. The busi
ness done in flowers and floral decorations by
tbeBe honses is really immense, and some of
the details of the trade will be found inter

and words of welcome, however, are much
more expensive. A new design lor presenta
tion is now introduced in the foi in of straw
baskets. These are made in all shapes, and,
when decorated uith snnlax, as well as filled
with flowers, are very beautiful. They cost
all the way from five to fifty dollarj.
NEW YEAR’S TLOWERS.
A great demand is made on the florists for
New Year’s decorations, and some of the
dealers sell upwards of five thousand dollars
worth of flowers for that day. At the Sie
brecht establishment, on the day before last
New Year, thirty men and boys were employed
in stemming flowers, while the proprietor and
his assistants made them up into boquets and
other elaboiate designs. Flowers for New
Years decorations are ordered alike by rich
and poor.
FLOWERS JOB EASTER.
The Easter decorations'of onr city churches
are very eloborate. A fitting display of flowers
is always made by the vestrymen or trustees,
and liberal offerings are sent in by all who
are religiously and devoutly disposed. At
St. Thomas’ church the lamb and the dove
which decorated the chancel on Easter day
cost neafly one handled dollars, and these ob
jects only formed a small part of the diplay.
