la hia eulogy npon Mr. Seward, Mr. Adams
speaks of the fate of those who depend npon
tho favor of the prince, whoiber ho bs one or
many. That prince is not always recog-
maed as snch in this country, bnt ha is cou-
stantly flattered as such. Nothing is more
common than to hear a publics speaker re
mark that the people will act their pleas
ure. We have seen constantly in newspa
pers, dnriDg ihe summer, that if the people
choose to rc-clcct a President half a dozen
times, they will do it. In Conventions end
T jegielatores the people are alluded to as
master with a servility that would become a
tonrtier of tho most “effete European mou-
arahy” in speaking of tho sovereign. How
often at great political meetings have wc not
all heard the obsequiousness of the minions
•f despotism denounced and pitied ! Yet the
speech to which we listen is itself an act of I tu-.q Pntfatypc fnr Qalo
the most debasing obsequiousness, and the; ■ ■ ■■wv* OUUagLo iui Oaic

pie is no more respectable than be who flat- j other benefit.
t Bn the king. Both have an abject fear of
their sovereign, and both are despicable.
We Americans must not suppose that we
^cape the vices of monarchies because we
nave no visible monarch. We may not kneel
before a throne nor kiss a royal uand, but our
adulation of the sovereign may be even more
mnauly and unpardonable. The question
every honorable mind is not what can
the people do, bnt what ought they to do ?
The duty of good citizens is plain. They
mast not pander to tho sovereign people, a*
they should not to the aovereign prince. Ar.d
tbe highest function of the pre*s iu a free
conatry is not to declare that the people can
do what they please, but to insist that they
.should please to do what is right. This is
equally true of a paper which sympathizes
with the aims and spirit of the party in
power. It is not to be its lackey and feed
attorney, but its friend and counselor. There
i- a constant tendency in dominant parties to
mi&Bpe their power, and iu their managers to
presume upon the unwavering support of the
whole party for any measure and lor any can
didate. To resist this tendency often be
comes the- paiamount duly of the honest
members of the party, and successful resist-
.ncc is tbe condition of their continued sym
pathy with it.
Tribute to tbe South.
The following beautiful tribute to the South
•i from the pen of the editor of the Vicksburg
Times: “Southern nationality is a dream of
the post. A gulf, beyond which we could not
pass, yawned between us and tho realization
of onr hopes; and though bright flowers
bloomed upon its blink and wafted us sweet
perfume, we could not cross to gather them,
f he Southern governor no longer gleams out
•mid the wild light of battle; the sword of the
>Aaqui»hed is sheathed and the land is
gloomy with the harmless sepulchres of
oar martyred dead. Bat when years and
years shall have passed away — when
last of the present generation
sleep with their fathers, and new forms walk
through old familiar places—when faction
shall have been hushed and jnstice holds tbe
scales—then, as bright as day and fiee trom
blemish and stain, will stand forth in bright
relief upon the scroll of frame, the record of
the South, dearer to the hearts of her chil
dren now in the hours of sorrow than when
-'•n tbe march of victory she won the admira
tion of the world. Pilgrims from other lauds
-hall tread with reverend step above the spot
where moulders the dust of onr loved ai d
iost; while those who are to follow us will
cherish as household gods the names of
those who, caning a way through
tho fiery path of war, have written
their names where they can never die. The
principle for which so many laid down their
dves may not be recognized until their names
Lave grown feeble on the toDgue cf friendship,
• ud been dropped like dead silence from the
longoo of the world. But it w ill straggle
back from the hollow bosom that once bled
fir it and ascend the heights of government.
And when Ihe faithful historian shall descend
into tbe vaults of tho dead past in quest of
traditions of liberty, he will discover to whom
■ c is indebted for their perpetoation.”

FIRST-CLASS BOARD,
, —TT—T , i By Mrs. CRIGLER,
A. correspondent of the Camden Jonrna :
iscasses the financial crisis calmly and can I Up Stairs, Clark Building,
u.aiy, nndsays, in conclusion: r Whitehall street, ATLANTA, G.v.
We are interested in the cotton planter, and
venture to suggest to him a course of acticD,
which will result in general good to that class.
Let every planter who owes his merchant, and
rearly all do, promptly an l frankly send for
ward his cotton crop to his merchant and
strengthen his hands. It is due as a matter of
business faith—it is necessary—for some of it
must be sold to pay freights, &c., and discounts
on renewals. The merchant can and will hold
rao.;t ot it for better prices; it is his interest to
do so. and the possession of it in his warehouses
±ivefi him credit in the banks, npon which he
•'an command the forbearance of the banks.
Moreover, ff cotton is generally sent forward,
tho little that is necessarily sold will prove a
small percentage on the fc crop of each, while
thoso who hold back will throw the onus on
those who 6end their crops forward; Loth
c!.iPses being equally bound to do so, it is not
b »re>h language to say he who enforces a bene
fit to himselfat the expense of another, does
Lt: do so honestly. With the views above
expressed, it is needless to add that the factor,
who improperly sacrifices cotton thus entrust
ed to him, is a dishonest agent; but if the
s..orifice is caused by the necessity of the
planter, he surely, and not the factor, should
bear the burden.
