Death. —We are pained to learn that Mrs.
W. R. Singleton died last night at her resi
dence, after a short illness.
The New Local.— Mr. A K. Watson took
charge of the local column of our neighbor,
the Telegraph, to-day. We congratulate that
paper upon the valuable acquisition.
Trade to-day is very good. Some merchants
say they did a larger business last week than
anv week of the past season. This augurs
well.
Good-bye.—The valedictory of out friend,
Mr. John D. Lloyd, appeared in yesterday’s
Telegiaph. We do not know where Mr. L.
will cast his lot, but our best wishes attend
him.
Bkutal.—Old Tom Price, an old neg o well
known to our citizens, was brutally beaten by
a lot of negroes, at a camp-meeting near For
syth, yesterday. A speech made by Tom some
years ago in the same locality was the cause.
Phi Gamma Society".—The editorial stuff of
this paper acknowledge the courtesy of an in
vitation to he present at the Anniversary of the
Phi Gamma Society of Emory College, at Ox
ford, September 22d. We will endeavor to be
represented on that happy occasion.
South Macon Drug Store. — Dr. S. D. Ev
erett comes out this evening in a card to the
public. He is not a candidate for Congressman,
hut is one for the public patronage. Therefore
he docs not expect your votes, but your pat
ronage. He keeps none hut the purest drugs
and medicines, end superintends in person the
prescription department.
Wohse than a Conundrum.—A few days
ago, at Hawkinsville, David Brown was mar
ried to Mary Brown, by the Rev. Mr. Brown of
that place. They departed for a bridal trip to
Savannah, both neatly attired in fashionable
brown suits, returning to make a home with
Mr. and Mrs. Brown—the latter of whom were
Browns before marriage—but not relatives.
Now, the aforesaid is a nephew of the elder
Mr. Brown; while his fair bride is a cousin of
Mrs. Brown, the elder; therefore, what rela
tionship will the Browns to he bear to the
elder Browns, or any other Browns, for that
matter ?
The only person in town who can answer
this conumdruin is Brown, the popular artist
on Cotton avenue, who is a distant relation to
the above Browns.

The Great Race—
In years long gone a man of brains,
Looked down the rushing stream,
And saw a race of cooking stoves,
Send forth a mighty steam.
The race was not so very long.
For the “ Charter Oak ” was swift;
It gained each day and left the rest
Behind on the ivaves adrift.
The people, came in wondrous crowds —
The race to ace they said,
While hats went up and they shouted long
The Charter Oak’s ahead. 134-135
