Tributary to the Memory of J. W.
Schofield!
Death (ails uot to cast its mantle of
gloom over the hearts of kindred spirits to
the dead, whether it come with stealthy
and hasty step, or with slow tread and
long-continued solemn warning. To the
loving it ever hath been some consolation
to take the last sad look at the loved form
of a dying friend, and press the nerveless
hand, while the pallor of death o'ercasU
the placid brow, and before the cold clod
covers it forever. If ll is sad thus to part
from friends while the last breath of life
is passing out. and the heart is Ix-ntiiig iis
last tlirol> while the eye Is turning aghast
toward tlie sky. and the spirit is taking its
everlasting flight from mortality to im
mortality, how much sadder and disconso
late to part from one whoso face paled by
the hand of disease, yet wreathed with
smiles, and return to find wreathing smiles
and pallid face gone horn earth forever !
The last sad consoling duty forbidden
by absence—the sad duty ol standing at
the bed-side of the dying and watching
the struggles of the soul to release Itseli
from its "Umament of clay " of tenderly
folding the winding sheet around the lov
ed form and following the iiier to the si
lent tomb—the advent of death becomes
doubly sad. ’Twus thus the spirit of our
friend and brother James W. Meholield
was taken from us Although for elgh
teen month* the fatal malady hud been
preying upon Ilia constitution and we bail
for so long a time watched the ravaging
success with which Ills eeblc body resisted

PRINTING
It lias been the custom heretofore, aud will probably remain so to a
great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send
North to have their printing done, simply because it can be done there
at a little lower figure than here. If our people would discontinue
patroniziug such men, they would soon see the policy, if not the jus
tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured
in the South, and hence the merchant must send where it is made, but
here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small
advance on northern prices, and still the work is sent away. We hope
the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to their in
terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and
should lie condemned.
