The Celestials in Arkansas.
Two years ago a number of Chinese ai
lived at our wharf and were objects of
great curiosity. The negroes especially
gazed at them with wondering eyes, de

Home ot these men settled near here, and
among them a small colony found homes
and cotton picking in the neighborhood
of Marlon Arkansas, Some nine or ten
miles from this city. Among them was
Ah Maun, who proved to be a Chinese of
education, gathered up some knowledge of
English rapidity, became popular, and
was called by the country people .Mm

that day his cotton picking amounted to
twenty two pounds. The negroes laughed
at the small specimen with a pig tail un

his popularity. East spring he and six
of Ids fellow country-men rented n piece

Every bit of grass wns obliterated, every

Early morn and dewy eve saw the six

unwearied industry that never lost heart,

companions Is admired, and we hear it said
that if the group choose to break up next

consisting of a wife and several grown

woman—when his wife and family and
neighbors were attending sen ices at the

The second warrant issued (we are in
formed) by Vuited Stales Commissioner
A W. istoue. of this city, alleges that three
effiraus of Wilkinson therein nominated,
committed mayhem by castration upon the
(h-inoi! of one Harry Lowther, a colored
man, during the summer of last year. The
first ot these is Dr. T. A. Simmons, a pop
ular and infiuential physician practicing
his profession at lrwiuton. and at present
the presiding officer iu the Masonic Lodge
at Ilia! place The second is Mr Henry
Hyman, a prominent merchant of lrwiu
ton. and the third is Mr Milton I.iudsav.
a young man employed ns clerk in Mr.
Hyman's utorc.
The third warrant, issued by Commis

citizens, named in the warrant, whipped
last summer a lewd negro woman mimed
Harriet Calhoun, who now lives in Macon,
On , where she has resided for the laHt fif
teen or twenty mouths. 1 lie first of these,
so accused, is-Mr. W. C. D. Carlisle, a
most respectable merchant of Irwinlon,
ami the second is Mr. George Gilbert, a
youth at that time going to school, uud
this year farming near that town
The fourth warrant, (we understand)
likewise by Commissicr Sway/.e, charges
that three citizen of Wilkinson, about Au
gust, 1871, seized und castigated a colored
prostitute, named Jane Hush. This wo
man and the one alleged in the foregoing
warrant to have been whipped, to-wit
Harriet Calhoun, arc said to lie sisters, and
Jane, like her sister, lias been living in
Macon for the past year and a half. The
first party charged in the warrant is
Mr. Eli I’eocock, a merchant of long
standing in Irwinlon ; the second is Mr.
Charles Peacock, a youth of seventeen,
going to school in Irwinlon ; and the third
is Mr. Carlisle, accused similarly in the
third warrant we have mentioned.
The last three warrants will scarcely he
heard, as wc aie informed, until the first
warrant, the parties to which were yester
day before Commissioner Stone, is again
brought up on Friday ami disposed of.
The prosecutor in all these cases is the
same person. He is a white man, mimed
Judson Knight, an employe in Hie Secret
Service of llie United State", who claims
to he a citizen of Georgiu. This detective
was specially procured and sent up to
Wilkinson county about four weeks ago
to work up these affairs. He was entirely
"unknown to lame'' before, hut hereafter
will perhaps he for a while somewhat
prominent in the eyes of honest people, as
In! lias doubtless become better acquainted
with the blessings of "fortune'’ (however

BLOOD PURIFIER |
It is not a physic which may give temporary
relief to the sufferer for the first few doses, but
which, from continued use brings Piles und
kindred diseases to aid in weakening the inval
id, nor is it a doctored liquor, which, under
the popularnameof “Bitters” is so extensively
palmed otl'on the public as soveregn remedies,
but it is a moist powerful Toni* anil
alterative, pronounced so by the leading
medical authorities of London and Paris, and
has been long used by the regular (physicians
of other countries with wonderful remedial re
