s Everybody behaved well yesterday and the
consequence was there was nothing on the
pocket, this morning.
Lectures.
Ourseulor, Dr. W. Watkin Hicks, atthe special
request of many citizens of Albany and Barnes
ville, will deliver lectures, one in each place.
On next Wednesday, the 20th, lie lectures in
Uarnesville on “Moral Greatness;” on Friday
tl,e 2fid, in Albany on “British rule in India.”
Heavy Mitsiucss.
The drug firm of Hunt, Rankin A Lamar arc
doing a tremendous busines. Large quantities
of material for manufacturing tlicir fertilizer
are constantly being shipped. Country mer
chants crowd them with orders for drugs and
chemicals, ami they are kept busy ns bees all
tlie time. They deserve a heavy patronage.
A Strange Ollice.
In passing the Spotswood this morning we
noticed a large goods-box with a handsomely
painted sign with this inscription:
GRIFFIN * OFFICE.
Thinking that our subscription was about
out—as no family can do without it—it oc
curred to us a favorable opportunity of sub
scribing for another month. Wc stepped up
to the diminutive office and asked for Fiteli.
A rough specimen of the porcine species, that
was airing itself on tlie other side, responded
with a grunt. We made up our mind on tlie
spot, if that was Fitch, wo couldn’t stretch our
conscience to subscribe for a hog’s paper.
The sign was painted in Windham & G’o.’s
best style, and will be sent to Griffin to-day.
Boardman’s IHap.
Wc are indebted to Mr. Arthur E. Board
man for a copy of Ills Map of Macon. A few
advance copies came to hand yesterday, and lie
will be prepared in a few days to supply pui
chasers. Tlie map is drawn from actual sur
veys by Mr. Boardman on a scale of 400 feet to
the inch. The wards are clearly marked out in
colors. It is invaluable to tlie fire department,
as every cistern and its position is marked out
and each fireman is now afforded an opportu
nity of familiarizing himself with their situation,
thus avoiding the usual delay of hunting np
cisterns.
' We hope our friends will appreciate tlie ef
forts of Mr. li. to give them a beautiful and
accurate map, and extend to him tlicir pat
ronage.
The IhiTorrenieiil Act.
Tlie 5:29 train from Ktifaula last uight
brought lip eight prisoners under charge of
Deputy Marshal Moore. They were charged
witti violation of the Enforcement Act at
Starkville, Lee county, Georgia. Their names
are Bully Tison, tool.) Fat. Askifis, James
Salter, Ben Salter, John Martin, J. J. King, It.
G. Hitt and V. G. Hitt. It is said that Askins
rfus a member of tlie 13th Illinois Cavalry, and
was Census Marshal of I.ec county last year.
They were carried before Commissioner
Swsyze last night, and as that gentleman was
subpu-nacd to go to Savannah last night, they
went do wn to that place in charge of Deputy
Marshals Ilarbaum and Walker and will give
bond before Commissioner Stone, waiving ail
examination.
Second Shad ol* llie Season.
. “Age before beauty ” always. The worthy
senior of the Telegraph was presented with the
tir. t shad of the season aud we—lucky we—got
the second. The donor, Mr. Felix Corput, ob
served faithfully the old saying with which we
begin this article.
When we gaze upon the silver sided fish, we
imagine how lie sportively laved his beautious
form in the bluish waters of the lovely St.
.Johns. There in his native element, surround
ed by admiring and envious kith and kin, all
paying homage to his beauty and symmetry of
shape, lie reigned with the dignity and grandeur
becoming his station. But like all monarch.,,
temptations are held out, and poor, weak na
ture lucdlmbs, the bait grabbed at and some
<Srl an&rlcr gobbles him up in a hurry. Thus
be changed his quarters from his congenial
<lime to our city. And who has the enterprise
to get him here? Corpnt—Felix Corput.

It atYords us much pleasure to refer to this
standard produce house of Macon. Its pro
prietors have lieen citizens of our city for fif
teen years, and their experience in tlie business,
either in tlie capacity of salesmen or proprie
tors, goes buck to tlie same number of year*.
The present houso was founded on the first
day of February 18(17 and lias been in success
ful operation ever since, the annual sales av
ernjglngn quarter of a million of dollars.
Their principal busiuess is done with farmers
ami planters, and their principal goods are
corn, bacon, lard, Hour, bagging, ties and grain.
In Ibis line they strive to excel, and from the
amount of business they do ami and tlie num
ber of wagons and drays loading before their
door, wo think they have succeeded well.
These gentlemen have won a name in Middle
Georgia which others may envy and which all
should try to emulate. It is always tints with
houses conducted upon tlie purest principles
of honor.
Now' in the fail tide of success, tlie future
course of this house is obliged to be one of
prosperity.
