The Macon Pobtopfiok. —lt is by no
means certain that the efforts to displace
ilr. Bond will be successful. An earnest

tlie Senate had not confirmed the nomina

Mr. Local :—A short time ago the City
Council passed an ordinance requiring bus
iness men to put their sweepings, trash,
tte , in boxes, barrels etc., in front of their
doors. Now who are to furnish these box
es and barrels ? I have bad three boxes
and two barrels stolen from in front of my
door and contents emptied in tbe alley.

Those that were fortunate enough to be
present at tbe Purim Ball of Thursday
tiight were weil pleased with our friend
Putzel’s report of the same. They agree
with him that it would nave been a week’s
work to give the names of tbe ladies pre
sent, and do not blame him for stopping
as they were all charming. None were
slighted as it would have been impossible
lor him to call all tbe names, and those
that were mentioned were those that he
happened to think of first.
Dangerous Counterfeit.— lt is as
tounding to hear of and see so many evi
dences of crime and moral depravity
among our people. Not content with
counterfeiting 5, 10, 20 and 50 dollar treas
ury notes, they now “ shove the queer" in
the shape of five cent nickle pieces. Num
bers of them are afloat, and peanut ven
ders and boot-blacks suffer greatly thereby
We advise our merchants to look out for
them. We do sincerely hope no one will
be so lost to shame and morality as to pass
on* off on our newsboys. They are near
enough broke now.

Mayor’s Court. —Frank Hixson is a
colored knight of the paint brush who
flings his paint with a vengeance, but for
got to take out a license. As Frank is a good
hard-working man, and was evidently ig
norant of the fact that a license was re
quired, ho was let oft on procuring the
city permit.
David Sulivan, Jr., is a brick. Like
David of old, he is hefty on the sling. lie
slings the murderous pebble with uncer
tain aim. But instead of slaying Goliali,
h came very near slaying a little girl, who
did'nt relish his skill as a slingist worth a
cent. He was young and his Honor sim
ply dismissod him with a reprimand.
Drainage. Yesterday, on our way
home, we noticed anew system of drain
log the waste water from the city pumps,
to the cisterns adjoining.
It consists of a square vat of cast iron,
the bottom perforated to prevent the ad
mission of trash of any nature, placed di
rectly under the spout from whence all
waste water runs to a concealed pipe large
enough to carry all the water without
choking up whatever, (the trouble hereto
fore with the small 1-2 inch pipes to the
cisterns > thus utilizing all the water, and
A°ing away with the unsightly ponds sur
reunding about all the pumps. It is a
t°od idea and should be connected with
all of them.
Mr. Archie McQueen is the designer of
ike above improvement, and has provided
*one six or eight pumps with it.
Jim Dence, of Macon, wants, to know of
the Columbus Sun, if Guwrjw Yarborough
oue of Whittle’s dry goods cleilsV wasn't
onoof those boys who “rUI the cow” when
hewe ut courting, and mentioned in this
paper yesterday.

Hocndry Street.—This thoroughfare
is in a wretched condition, and, though
considerably “out" is none the less used
when it can be. Tlie street overseer would
confer a favor on the resident* of Tatunll
Square by straightening thing' up a little,
along that line.
