TEN THOPfIAND DOLLARS Foil A mSNKR
TN NEW YORK.
One of the greatest pieces of CAlrtva
gance on record in this country is de
scribed by a New York correspondent of
the Boston Transcript. It occurred in tbo
Shape of a private dinner given at Del
inonico e A wealthy German Importer,
who has retired from business. aud # was
about to tail for Europe, decided, before
leaving America, to invite hit friends to
dinuer. Covert were ordered for seventy
four guests, and carte blanche was given
lo Dcltnonico for the dinner. The large
banquet hall of that establishment was
secured—the same hall wberu the dinners
lo Dickens and Tyndall vrere given—at
the rate of fifteen dollars a ticket.
For nearly a week the employes of Del
tnonlco were rugeged In preparing for
this dinner. A table twenty four feet
wide, extending the whole length of the
room, wae constructed. In the centre of
it an artificial pond was made, with a
foudlaln, while around ihe fountain live
swam were floating. Of course the pond
was caged over. The centre of the table
was banked with flowers, from the water’s
edge, at a coat of over $3,000. Perfume
fouutalua were constructed in various
parts of the table, and to add to the iutoxi
cation of the senses, Berstein’s full band
of thirty-five pieces was engaged to fur
nish the music. The dinuer commenced
at eight p. m., and continued a couple of
hours, after which dancing took place un
til midnight, wheu the diuuer, or supper,
as it was then called, was resumed for an
hour er two, followed by dancing until
four o'clock In the morning. The bill
for this dinuer amounted to just SIO,OOO.

PRINTING
It has been the custom heretofore, and will probably remain bo to a
great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send
North to have their printing dene, simply because it can be done there
at a little lower figure than here. If our people would discontinue
patronizing such men, they would soon see the policy, if not the jus
tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured
in the South, and hence the merchant must send where it is made, but
here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small
advance on northern price*, and still the work is sent away. We hope
the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to their in
terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and
should be condemned.

A MODEL NEWSPAPER.
THE SAVANNAH DAILY NEWS.
The Savannah Daily Morning News is ac
knowledged by the press and people to be the
best daily paper south of Louisville and cast of
New Orleans. Carrying with it the. prestige
and reliability of age, it has all the vigor and
vitality of youth, and its enterprise as a gath
erer of the latest and freshest news has aston
ished its contemporaries and met the warm ap
probation of the public.
During the year 1873, no expense of time, la
bor, and money will be spent to keep the Morn
ing News ahead of all competitors in Georgia
journalism, and to deserve the flattering enco
miums heaped upon it from all quarters.—
There has, us yet, been no serious attempt
made to rival the special telegrams which the
New t s inaugurated some years ago, and the
consequence is, that the reader in search of the
latest intelligence always looks to the Morn
ing News. The telegraphic arrangements of
the paper are such that the omissions made by
the general press reports are promptly and re
liably supplied by its special correspondents.
Tub Morning News has lately been eularged
to a thirty-six column paper, and this broad
scope of type embraces, duily, everything of
interest that transpires in the domain of Liter
ature, Art, Science, Politics, Religion, and Gen
eral Intelligence; giving to the reader more
and better digested matter than any other pa
per in the Btate.
It is, perhaps, needless to speak of the pol
itics of the Morning News. For years and
years—indeed, since its establishment—it has
been a representative Southern paper, and from
that time to the present, in all conjunctures,
it has consistently and persistently maintained
Democratic. States Rights principles, and la
bored, with an ardor and devotion that know
no abatement, to promote and preserve the in
terests and honor of the South.
The special features of the Morning News
will be retained and improved upon during the
ensuing year, and several new attractions will
be added.
The Georgia News Items, with their quaint
and pleasant humor, and the epitome of Flori
da Affairs, will be continued during the year.—
The Local Department will be. as It has been
for the past year, the most complete and relia
ble to be found in any Savannah paper, and
the commercial columns will be full and accu
rate.
The price of the Daily is $lO per annum ; $5
for six months; $2.50 for three months; $1 for
one month.
TIIE TUI-WEEKLY NEWS.
This edition of the Morning News is espe
cially recommended to those who have not the
facilities of a daily mail. Everything that has
been said in the foregoing in regard to the daily
edition may bo said of the Tri-Weekly. It is
made up with great care, and contains the la
test dispatches and market reports. The price
of this edition is $6 per annnm, $3 for six
months, and $1.50 for 3 months.
TIIE WEEKLY NEWS.
The Weeklt Morning News particularly
recommends itself to the farmer and planter,
and to those who live off the lines of railroad.
It is one of the best family papers in the coun
try, and its cheapness brings it within the reach
of all. It contains Thirty-nix solid columns of
reading matter, and is mailed so as to reach
subscribers with the utmost promptness. It is
a carefully and laboriously edited compendium
of the nows of the week, and contains, in addi
tion, an infinite variety of other choice reading
matter. Editorials on all topics, sketches of
men, manners, and fashions, tales, poetry, bi
ography, pungent paragraphs and condensed
telegrams cuter into its make-up. It contains
the latest telegraphic dispatches and market
reports up to the hour of going to press, and
is, in all respects, an indispensable adjunct to
every home.
Price—One year, $2; six months, $1; three
months, 50 cents.
Subscriptions for either edition of the Morn
ing News may be sent by express at the risk
and expense of the proprietor. Address
