observable in tbe decreased expenditure

THE CONFEDERATE MONUMENT
Tha Base to he Raised.
Tho Committee in charge of the Con
federate monament have como at last to
the oonelnsion to raise the base ot toe
monument a number of feet. The design
fa to raise the present base, and arrange
the approaches to it on all eides with
granite steps. This will be a very great
improvement, and will add immensely to
the appearance of the structure. This
will coBt about five hundred dollars,
which amount the Committee think there
will be no difficulty in raising withont a
publio appeal.
The monument Is now in Savannah.
It haB been admitted free of all duties.
It was necessary, however, to furnish
tho custom officers with a series of affi
davits in order to show tbat the monu
ment was within tho provisions of tbe
law passed by Congress on the subject.
On acoount of the weight of the pedes
tal of the monument two cars will bo re
quired for its transportation to this city,
and a frame work fa being arranged for
the purpose of equalizing the weighlt
on the ears. The time for the un

be announced in a few days.
It ia the intention of those interested
that the oeremonies attending the un
