WESLEYAN FKnALE COLLEGE.
Tite ltint Day of tlie Carnival*
The exercises hi the college chapel yosterday
morning were of nnuanal interest, and attracted
thithor the largest crowd that has assembled on
any previons occasion daring the exerciser.
The large chapel did not begin to seat the va>t
audience, tho gontlomon, almost to a man, be
Dg compelled to give tho seats up to the ladies.
The "Convent Bell March” (Wyman) was ad
mirably performed by Misses OuBoae, Hoard,
LUtlo and Pound.
The exercises were then opened with prayer
by Bishop Pieroe.
"Lea Eiogarelles” (Bordise) wa9 sung by
Missos Batts and Jordan, and sung vory sweetly.
This was followed by tho reading of oompo-
td lions by
TTIK TUICD SrCTXON OF THE SXXIOH CLASS,
consisting of ten of tbo most accomplished
young ladies of the college. Notwithstanding
the inteliectnsl feast I bat had been served daily
for almost a week, the Faenlty bad saved some
of the best things for tho laat, and thus the day
was mads quite as brilliant as any^of its prede
cessors.
The "Salutatory Address to the Faculty f »
was read by its young author, Miss Sadie Barge,
of Oxford, sod was admirably read. Tho essay
had been earefully prepared, and abounded in
floe sentiment, every word of which appeared
to oome fresh and sparkling from the heart of
the young reader.
Miaa Mary T. Houston, a beautiful young
Savannah lady, with "Onward, Right Onward”
for her motto, read An admirable composition,
that was calculated to inspire a fcoling of
activity and an earnestness of purpose in the
minds of her companions. 8ke is a good reader,
and one of the most attractive ladies in appear-
anoe that has appeared upon tbo stage.
Miaa Addle Y. Mercer, of Georgetown, Geor
gia, had for her theme tho prosy one of "Ap
plied Mathematics." No one expected anything
but a doll composition upon that subject, and
t'le expectations of no ono were falflllod; for
the composition was fairly aglow with brillian
point and sparkling witticism. It oontainot
about two puna to the line and all were goof
ones. The only difficulty about it was the
young lady was unable to make herself distinctly
heard in every portion of the chapel, hence
there were many people there who will nevai
know what ft vast number of grand thing! they
missed.
Miss Hattie M. Lissiter, of Maoon, whose
subject waa "The Beauty of Female Pioty,” was
exouted from reading on acoonut of feeble
health.
Mias Bailie Jones, of Barko county, sang “La
Farfallotta," (Terry) in her sweetest and most
artistio manner, which was worthy of a prims
donna.
"Yaneorina" was tho subject of a composi
tion by Mias Willie J. M il lie brooks, of Gal-
barton, Georgia. She tore the gloss off of men
and things in general, acd showed how by poo
ricy is accustomed to array itself in the garb
of virtue and go about the world to deceive.
Her composition war a good- one and was well
read.
Miss L. Helen Goode, of Georgetown, Geor
gia, with "What can we do?” for her theme,
read a most excellent and thoughtful composi
tion, showing that she bad a clear conception of
life and its purposes, and tho mission and duty
of woman. Her essay was well written and read
very graoefully.
"The Moss Upon the Stone,” by Mias Susie
R. Wiggins, of Sparta, Ga., was britnfaU of
tender aentiment and womanly feeling and
sympathy. It wa# an imaginative production,
well written and pleaaanUy read.
"Like a Fatty Creature," (Rossini ) a Losuti-
fal chorus, wa* sung by .tho class, Miss Breeden
playing the aocompanimt r.L
Mum Bailie L. Jones, of Burke county, whose
mignifioent singing we have had frequent oo-
©4iton to nottos, road an essay on “Fireside
Angela.* Har * ‘angels were not those intangi
ble ercaturea, which poets write about and
children dream a boat, and which no reasonable
person expeots to see this side of heaven; but
real flesh and blood “angels,” such as make
homer? happy, and which are developed in
fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. The
young lady paid a glowing tribute to this class
of *‘angels,” and the observation of etch intel
ligent hearer was that she must have been
reared among the happieet of home influences.
No wonder that her natore is bo in \ orQ ^
the miracles of harmony, and that her voice has
me well learned to breathe the sweetest cslsnces
within its sweep. It wav the production of a
genius, and the genius which produced it had
the genius to give it a magnificent reading,
which waa heard all over the house, arousing
fresh burvt^bf laughter with every sentence. No
description can do jnatioe to thia essay. To be
properly appreciated, it must be read by its
fair young author. A score of times aha had to
pause for the laughter and applause to subside,
and even those solemn faced divines, including
the Bishop, who sat in the Trustees’ oorner lost
all their gravity and their reverend sides fairly
•book with the mirth that their white neck
oloths oonld not choke down.
Miae Emma Jordan, of Montioello, Georgia,
rsad the “Valedictory Address to the Faculty."
It was a well prepared address, full of pathos,
and waa pronounoed by a sweet and earnest
voice. Miss Jordan ia one of the most prefi
cient young ladies of the college, if one may
judge her general standing by this single lit
erary effort.
Daring the performance of "Galiforala
Polka" (Eerz) the entire graduating clrss, with
the exception of the Valedictorian, took poai
tions In front of the stage for the ooscJudirg
exercises.
The "Valedictory Address to the Graduating
Glass" was then read by Mias Hattio A. Jones,
of Barke connty. This young lady was not in
good health, haring arisen from her bed to read
this Address; but she delivered it in a manner
that redounded to her credit and awoke the
keenest emotions in the hearts of her bearers.
It was an incomparably swaet acd tender pro
duction, r.nd it waa only by the most heroic
effort that the young lady was able to oontrol her
feelings while she read it; but she maintained
her oomposnre to the Hat; but the last word
was never pronounced. She kept the tears
from her eyes, but she could not keep them
from her voice. The entire class wept tears
that did them no discredit, and there were very
many moist eyes that did not belong to the
class.
The composition was finely conceived, chaste
ly written, and read In a voice that was as pure
as the sentiments it uttered. It sounded like
the sad sweet notes of an JEollan harp—a
hrealhing of melancholy mingled with hopeful
glimmerings of pleasure. Every one who beard
it was charmed with its elegant grace and evi
dent aluoerity. '
This ended the reading by the young ladies,
and left a spirit of sadness retting upon the
hearts of the audience. It was not a pleasant
feeling, and something was needed to lift the
cloud and let the sunshine again oome in as
before. This something was at hand la
THE 1IACCALAURXATE ADDRESS
by Rev. E. EL Myers, D D. f President of the
Faculty. The learned Doctor took his audience
fairly by surprise by discarding the common
forms of prose, and arraying his thoughts be
hind a prancing Pegasus, scampered away to
the ringing measures of the stately pentameter,
f No one believed it of the Doctor—no cne ex-
peoted from him each a manifestation of divine
afllatas; but there it was ringing and soaring
in the mellowest cadences, fall of fine sentiment
and frequently arising to the dignity of trne
poetic expression. Thus in the movement of
the stately epic, be uttered his final, paternal
thoughts to the yonng ladies, who stood in
beaatifnl parity before him, inculcating lessons
that were as admirable as bis verse, full of
tender solicitatiou for (hose who had been to
him almost as daughters, acd who were about
to leave the old roof-treo to be. assembled there
no moro forever. Tho address was a fine literary
production, and its merit was increased by the
splendid manner in which it was read.
Diplomas wore presented to the thirty eight
young ladies of the senior olass, whose names
have been mentioned heretofore, conferring
upon them the flrai literary degree.
Miss Annie A. Breeden, of Bencettsville,
South Carolina, was graduated in instrumental
music. She is the first ono who has ever re-
oeivod a musical diploma from this college, and
she ought to be proud of the distinction sho has
won. It is an enviable one, but eminently
doserved.
THE B3ARD OF TRUSTEES
has been io^session (during the week, at tbo
college.
The vonerablo Luvlck Pierce, D. D., was ab
sent for the first time in mare than thirty years.
His absence was occasioned by illness, and was
sincerely felt and regretted by every one. The
Board passed resolutions of sympathy for him.
A committee was appointed to prepare suita
ble resolutioni in regard to the death o( Judge
Pulaski Holt, former Chairman of the Board.
Judgo Barnard Hill Is now Chairman, and
Mr. Henry L Jewett, Secretary.
Rav. J. W. Burke was elected Trustee, tied
Rev. J. Blikaly, dacsaied, and Rev. Thomas T.
Christian vice Dr. E. H. Myers, resigned.
The Board passed a resolution of thanks to
Dr. E. H. Myers, for his excellent Basoilaareile
address, and requested a oopy for publication.
rARTDfO soxo.
The following parting aong waa then sung by
the sonlor class:
Util we this festal day! banish despair!
We hid our hearts be gay - dismiss all cue!
For now our duty done,
Now onr diplomas won,
Our thoughts oo pleasures run,
Youth oovets joy!
Wo’ll ba gay, while we may.
Hoses gather, nosegays scatter.
Laugh and sing, each one briog
Fostivo gladness to the day.

which have been fully as brilliant as any that
