Bainbridge, Cnthbert and Co
lumbus Railroad.
We give the correct .heading of the
bill chartering this road. It is to ran
"from -Bainbridge,” and, hence, tbe
propriety of placing the name of this
city first. The interests of the road and
ipeople to be benefitted by it, demand
that the road be commenced at this end,
so as to give the country penetrated an
outlet to the sea and Gulf os the road
advances into the interior. The object
countiCT°oi d I s 40 nfford tte Western
ovo a • . qf - ate > many of which
me now denied raitiw V.„ Uities a
direct communication with Savann’m,,
the great commercial centre of the South
as well as with ports on the Gulf.
The importance of this road to the
future welfare of Savannah can hardly
be too highly estimated. The section it
is to represent is, without donbt, the
-nchest and most fertile region within
the limits of the State. There will not
be a poor landed county, so far as our
information extends, between Decatur
and Mnscogee. The growth of the forest
and the productiveness of the fields __
cultivation, denote a soil of remarkable
fertility, ns characterising the whole
country to be tapped by the road.
The construction of the road to Cuth
bert, provided its locality is determined
by its advantages in cost, will not exceed
$12,000 per mile, the amount of the
State’s endorsement. Beyond Cuthbert,
the cost v, ill be much greater; but tbe
people there are better able to incur
additional expense, and that portion of
the road will probably be the most vnl
liable to the stockholder, and in greater
demand from tbe destitution of the
country of all communication with
the outer world.
We hope to see general enthusiasm
awakened among our people in favor of
this grand enterprise. Savannah and
the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad Company
are to be the greatest beneficiaries, and
we hope they will not fail to insure the
early organization of the Company, and
the commencement of active operations,
in the survey of the route, and the im
mediate grading of twenty miles of the
road. ^
We call upon every citizen interested
in the success of this grand movement
for the development of Western Georgia,
to do his whole duty in the premises,
proving, by his subscription to the stock
of the Company, his liberality, public
spirit and superior intelligence. Let
every man do his duty—his whole duty,
and the result no one can doubt,
bnilt.”
We are certain the editor will fail in
thisattempt; he proposes to do too much.
Indeed, the article from which the above
extract is taken, proves Tic has yet-all-to
learn about the matter in hand; and he
does not give himself time enough to
sufficiently study the subject—one week
will be too short a time, brother.
The Fourth Petition or Oub Lobd’s
Praxes.—We ever criticise the produc
tion of one of onr own correspondents
with reluctance, desiring rather to ap
prove and commend; but the exposition
of the fourth petition of our Lord’s
prnyer, which we publish in this issue,
seems to demand of us an expression of
dissent from some of the writer’s views.
Did not the Lord’s prayer embrace
whatever might and should be prayed
for, it would have failed to meet the
reqnest: “Lord teach us topRAY.” Not
for any particular thing; hut to pray.
How and what to pray, The Lord’s
prayer, hence, is the foundation and
warrant for all prayer. Whatever is not
included in it, is unauthorized and vain,
The writer’s own views, therein ex
pressed, it appears to us, vindicate the
generally endorsed meaning of the peti
tion. Christ is the life of both body
and soul, and the petition certainly in
eludes the daily sustenance of the one
as well as the other.
Eveu --iiere we have an abundance
laid up in store oi worldly goods, we are
etill dependent upon tilt, good provi
dence of God in preserving and render
ing what We have conducive to our
health and Vigor—as bread.
Revival in Bainbridge. —The revival
in this city, growing out of the pulpit
labors of Bishop Pierce, Presiding Elder
Clarke and others, has grown to dimen
sions indicating a general work of grace
throughout the entire community.—
Crowds encompass the altar every service,
and conversions, as clear and satisfactory
as we have ever known, are constantly
occurring. Rev. J. M. Austin, of Thom-
asville, who rises to the full statue of a
man of God, has, for the Inst few dayfc,
occupied the pulpit, and is doing good
service in connection with the zealous
and beloved Pastor of the Church, Bov.
A.. J. Dean. The work, however, is all
oi God; and to him, and not his feeble
instruments, bo all the glory. May it
go on, until every citizen of Bainbridge
is redeemed, and tbe authority of tbe
Almighty restored, and his reign fully
established in every heart.
Congress Refused to Interfere
will* tbe Civil Government of
Georgia.
Since the close of the late disastrous
war the people of Georgia, of all grades
and conditions, have not had so great
cause to rejoice as they now have in the
refusal of Congress to disturb the civil
government of this State. Georgia now
occupies a position more desirable, ad
vantageous and satisfactoiy than any
other Southern State. She is a white
man’s State, and will continue to be for
all time to come. The courts have de
cided, as well as our Legislature, that
negro is inelligible to office without
some qualifying enactment, and the
Legislature being in the hands of the
whites, such a law can never be passed
Hence, the government of the State of
Georgia will ever be, as it is now, a
white man’s government
The failure of the Congress, which has
just adjourned, to interfere with the in
ternal affairs of Georgia, without doubt
settles the question, and will restore
confidence to the public mind, inspire
hope throughout our entire borders, and
insure an influx of the better population
from the other States, both North and
South, that will soon overran our do
main, and give ns a prosperity unknown
in the past
We should be thankful, one and all,
for this unexpected favor from Divine
Providence, and from this time forward
endeavor to be a better people, in every
way, than we have ever been before—
“ceasing to do evil, and learning to do
well,” in- obedience to the command of
our Heavenly Father, “who will not al
ways chide, neither will he keep his
anger forever.”
Let ns hope and pray that the days of
our calamity are ended.

Georgia Conference, at its late ses
sion in Albany, passed the following

from this State will be admitted, if
any are. Tift, Young and Christy are
the right men in the right place, but
the carpet-baggers are a set of fellows
the people of Georgia detest as so
many vultures.

A Pleasing Surprise—Handsome
Present.—Near the hour of nine
o’clock on Saturday night last, a rap
was heard at the door of the Parson
age of Asbury M. E. Church in this

—went to the door, upon arriving
there, found upon the outside, neatly

with “Asbury Church” -engraven oe

such sales illegal and void, and
authorizing the Tax Collectors to re

God help the wretch who nightly drags
Her life along the ghastly flags,
In sin, in hunger and in rags.
God help her, when the bitter rain
Beats on her—like a window pane—
And almost washes oat her stain.
God help her, when, with naked feet,
She gropes along, and bows to meet
The cruel corner of tbe street.
God help het, when, with tearless eye,
She looks into the blackened sky
And strikes her breast, and asks to die.
God help her, wandering to and fro,
Without one Christian glance to throw
A beam upon her sullied brow.
Poor child of good and Child of ill,
Too weak for her misguided will,
God help her, she’s a woman still.
