What a lesson of humility is taught
by this petition, and confirmed by quo
tation. Actual, personal, dailv religion,
is all that will stand the tett. How
greatly we need every "day the benefits
of the atonement, to enable us to live
acceptable to God. The reason so
man) believers are weak and vacilating,
is a failure in asking for their daily
bread. Christ’s words are cheering:
“ask, and ye shall receive.” If we fail
in asking, we are assuredly guiltj; ‘and
if we be at last cast away, God’s throne
is clear; we Wefe taught the necessity
of daily applications for the benefits of
the atonement, ebcoiiraged and invited
to ask with assurance of success, and
failing to do if, the fault is ours. The
practical duties of the Christian are tb
bo daily performed. All life’s duties
cannot be performed in one day—hence,
the necessity of daily bread: The min
ister is commanded to go into all the
world and preach; this be cannot do
acceptably unless he himself receive
strength from on high. Does this
strength come to hitn like sunshine
and rain, or alone in answer to prayer?
I kndw yoti'r answer: He lives by the
day as a Christian-. When he is weakest
then is he strongest, being more im
portunate in asking for his dVily bread.
It is needless for any nian or wolnau to
make an excuse for a failure of perform
ing the practical duties of life, such as
family prayer <fec., while this petition
r'dhiains. Bread strengthens the body.
Christ believed in, loved and daily
sought to strengthen the believer, caus
ing him to be able to do all things.
Take courage then, ye who are weak,
put sue life’s great duties, and be more
persistent in asking for daily interest in
Christ—yoiir bread, your life; your
strength'.
Third. This trie* affords great en
couragement, showing that Christian
graces ate not arbitrarily conferred, but
given alone to those asking. I beard
a venerable man in Love-feast say, he had
not been angiy in fourteen years'. To
what an excellence he had attained !
