and happening to give film a rare slice,
with blood dr pping from it, the lion
seized the hand that field it, crushing i',

Newspaper Substitute*.— The New
York Nation says that tn Italy, where the
Government exercises acer am control
over the press, it is the custom for each
journal to maintain a stout laboi irfg man,
who, for a stipulated salary, consents to
be cast into prison in atonement for such,
offences as the journal may commit.
Colisi quently this holiest fellow spends
half hi.s days in arre-t; the journalists
pay the tines and write what they please.
Tnc Nation thinks that this would be
the true principle on which to render the
journalists responsible in this country.
