The Hitterness of Party Hate.
The following extracts from our Re
publican exchanges are fair specimens
of the manner in which the President is
now denounced and assailed in the Re
publican press.
[From the dt. lz>nis Democrat, Rjpublicia Orgin.]
Tha President’s latest Phase.— Presi’-
det»t Johnson’s extravagant tirade,
which we publish this morning, should
be read by every citizen, and with pro
found thoughtfulness. The principal
emotions in perusing it will be aston
ishment and mortification, and the first
inquiry must be, are these the utteran
ces of deliberatenes and fixed pur pose,or
of wild passion merely. If the former,
we have but to await an attempt to car
ry out the infamous course suggested,
of treating Sumner, or Stevens, or even
that rabid Ishmaelite, Wendell Phillips,
as the traitor that Jeff. Davis is. But
there is as little prospect of President
Johnson giving effect to this empty va
poring, as of his being the Moses of the
freedmen, or making treason odious. He
shines more in promising and
ing than in fulfilling. In his position,
however, he can not prove as impotent
for evil as for good, and from the very
weakness betrayed by his intemperate
harangue the gravest disasters may
spring. We have no desire to comment
upon the disgraceful intemperance of
language, a the evident and gross loss
of temper and abandonment to personal
vituperation that mark the President’s
stump speech, and that should cause
the cheek of every American to tingle
with shame.
[From the Chicago Republic»n.]
It is wonderful to notice the alacrity
with which all the traitors and copper
heads in the countiy are hastening to
range themselves under the banner of
President. Every friend and admirer of
Jeff. Davis is now the admirer of An
drew Johnson. For instance, the Cincin
nati Enquirer thanks God for the veto
of the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill, and
says “that never in the history- of the
country has there been a political con
test of the bitterness of that upon
which we are now about to enter.—
Every citizen must determine which
side he will take—with the radicals or
against them with the Congress or with
the President.”
Very true; and every guerrilla, rebel,
horse-thief, and Confederate spy and in
cendiary will now be found, just as be»
fore, on the same side with the Enquirer.
The Western Reserve (Ohio) Chroni~
cle has a leader on the subject which we
copy entire, as follows :
President Johnson has vetoed the Fred
men’s Bureau Bill ! Copperheads and
rebels are in ecstacy. Good by, Anay I
and may the Lord have mercy on you I
The Maccacheek (Ohio) Press in a
very short article, makes a savage attack
on the President and the Senators who
failedonthe homestretch—closing with
the following paragraph :
Hereafter, i» the estimation of all loy
al men, the names of Andrew Johnson,
Dixon, Norton, Stewart, Cowan, Morgan
and Doolittle will live second only to
Arnold and Judas Iscariot.
[From the Chicago Tribune.]
Mr. Johnson’s policy is heartily back'
ed by the entire South and by the cop
perhead party of th». North. The Presi
dent himself seems entirely willing to
throw himself into the hands of the ele*
ment. Hisspeceh atWa h ngton was de
livered to a crowd of not orious coppen
heads, secessionists and rebels, with hard
ly a man of loyal record in the entire as
semblage. His language’, too, was coarse
ly insulting to certain prominent repre
sentative men of the Union, and his po
sitions were revolutionary and dagoro >us.
He denounced the Reconstruction Com
mittee of both Houses of Congress as an
irresponsible central directory who op*
posed the restoration of the Union, and
whom he compared to Jefferson Davis,
Toombs and Slidell. As he opposed the
latter as traitors so he annouced would
be oppose the former. And whom does
the President thus brand ns tinitor.4 They
are Senators Fessenden, Grimes, Howard
Harris and Williams, and Kepresentaives
Stevens, Johnson, Bingham, Gider,
Conkling, Blair, Morrill, Boutwell, Wash
burne and Rogers They are as unsul*
lied, patriotic and statesmanlike a body
of men as the Union party can furnsh.
Thaddeus Stevens, of Pennsylvania, he
denounces by name, as an enemy to the
Government, laboring to destroy it, mere
ly because he is the recognized leader of
the House of Representatives.
Os course such language is an indiss
criminate charge against the entire
House, for it is only the fact that they
agree with Thaddeus Stevens that
makes him their leader, and therefore
more powerful, and therefore worthy of
being made a target for the .President’s
abuse. He selects in like manner one of
the most accomplished orators of the
Senate, Mr. Sumner ; but in branding
Mr. Sumner as a traitor for his political
opinions, he branda every Republican
who agrees with Mr. Sumner. His third
“ traitor’’ is Wendell Phillips, a mere
public speaker, who holds no office, and
does nothing but talk. Does the Presi
dent intend to brand talkers as traitors
and to suppress freedom of speech in this
country ?
In the language he used, as well as in
the character of those whom he address
ed, the President was guilty of a studied
comprehensive insult to the whole loyal
people. He showed a perfect willingness
to swing clear of us altogether and throw
himself into the arms of copperheads and
rebels.
The Perrysburg (Ohio) Journal says :
The President—we arc pained to re
cord the fact—has severed the ties which
. have bound him to the true and tried
men of the Union.
( The Lebanon (Ohio) Star says:
The position of President Johnson is
clearly defined. We all know where he
stands. He upholds the cause of trea*
son. He deliberately turns against tho
party that elected him, and against tho
' friends of the Union.
From the Columbus Journal-
All through the State the feeling on
. the receipt of the President’s last speech
ranges from deep pain and mortification
at its imprudence, up to intense disgust.
The Zanesville Courier is the only Union
paper which has no word of praise or
condemnation. We look for something
from it in course of time.
From the Sprlngleld (0.) Republican.
President’s Speech.
At last we have a full report of tho
speech which President Johnson deliver
ed on Thursday night from the portico
of the Executive Mansion to a motley
crowd of rebel .sympatizers which came
to him from their mass meeting at Gro
ver's Theater. The reason why the tel
egraphic report did r.ot come over the
wires complete on the night of its de
livery was simply that the particu
lar friends of the President used every
effort to suppress it, to get a modified
version into the hands of newspaper
men, offering them printed slips from
which the offensive passages were omit
ted, and to prevent in every way the
disclosure of the facts to an insulted peo
ple Even with the comparatively am
ple report which has at last come to hand
it is impossible, as the Washington dis
patches st 'te, to form ajust idea of the
style, temper and effect of the President’s '
utterances. The truth is sorrowfully ad
mitted on all sides that no such disgrace
ful scene has been witnessed in the Na
tional Capitol, and that Mr. Johnson has
even eclipsed that famous inaugural of
his when sworn in as Vice President,
which our readers will painfully remem
ber.
From tbc Cleveland Leader.
The President has proven false to him
self, to his glorious war record, to his
pledges to the colored people of the
South, and to the party which elected
him by thus placeshimself with the cop
perheads and rebels in opposition to a
measure absolutely necessary for the
protection of the Southern Unionists,
black or white, and will have cause to
regret it to the end of a very brief po
litical existence and for all his life there
after.
The President’s Speech Indorsed,
It seems that the indorsement of the
President’s 22d of February speech by
Mr. Seward, the head of the Republican
party, is very emphatic, while Thurlow j
Weed goes equally as far as Mr. Seward.
Ths Washington correspondent of the
Cincinnati Gazette telegraphs that paper
on the 27th inst. as follows:
An evening paper furnishes from the
Presidential table the following telegrams
sent him by Mr. Seward, on the morn*
ing of the 23d:
“Dear President: It is all right and all
safe. The Union is restored, and the
country safe. Your speech is triumph
ant, and the country will be happy. I
come back on Monday.
Wm. H. SEWARP.”
Another dispatch from Mr. Seward, to
an officer of the Government, says, under
date ot Feb. 23:
“All right. The work is done. The
country is safe. The Administration is
established. Its enemies are nowhere.
Look for mo on Monday, unless you hear
that I come sooner.
Wm. H. SEWARD.”
The following was Thurlow Weed’s in
dorsement of the President’s speech, and
was also sent on the 23d.*
“I thank you from my whole grateful
heart lor your speech of yesterday. The
Union is now a fixed fact
THURLOW WEED.”
What do they Mean ?
Dr. Cheever, in the prayer he delivs
ed before bis usual Sunday political bar
rangue last evening, besought God Al
mighty that, is case our rulers (meaning
the President and his supporters) “should
persist in their present career of wicked
ness, and refuse to do “unto others as
they should be done by, “He (God) would
take them out of the way.’’ What did
Cheever mean ?
Wendell Phillips, who made a speech
in Brooklyn recoutly to jhove the Presi
dent a rebel and a traitor, in the same
address spoke significantly of Mr. John
son as “an obstacle to be removed.” —
What did Phillips mean?
Thad. Stevens, in open Congress, de
clared that if the “man at the other end
of the avenue” had his deserts, he would
lose his head like Charles the First. —
What did Thad. Stevens mean ?— N- Y.

Feathers from a Dead, Duck.— The
first telegraphic reports of President
I Johnson’s speech made him speak of
Forney as a “dead duck.” Later and
correct reports make him peak of Forney
as a “d< ad cock.’’ The difference is im
material. Forney is a fowl character,
either way.— Chicago Ttmes.
