Stars and Stripes
Torn and Trampled
New York, May I.—The Starsand
Stripes was torn down and trampled
under foot and a red flag substituted
during a fierce fight at a May day
meeting of the Socialist party and
affiliated unions in Union Square
Park late today. That a serious
panic did not ensue is believed to
have been due to the fact that thou
sands of persons on the outskirts of
the crowd did not know what the
trouble was.
Responsibility for the tearing down
of the flag is disclaimed by the So
cialists, who assert that members of
the Industrial Workers of the World
committed the act. The Socialist
representatives on the platform ap
peared to have done their best to
protect the national colors.
The trouble started at the conclu
sion of a parade of 8,000 men and
women who gathered in the park for
speech-making. Red banners, the
emblems of Socialism, already
adorned the speaker’s platform and
the band was playing the “Marseil
laise” when the Stars and Stripes
was carried to the stand as the first
speaker was about to be introduced.

Population and Prospenty.
It is sometimes argued that thc
growth of great cities is beneficial to
the farmers, in that they afford a rea
dy market, which he would not other
wise have, for his produce. But if the
population, now concentrated in the
cities, were spread out over the coun
try, there would be just as many
mouths to feed; the produce of the
farm would be equally in demand,
and at the same time the increase of
the rural population would bring a
great increment of value to the land.
The great mercantile houses of the
cities would sell just as many goods,
also, or more. So the so-called
“boosters” of the cities are making
a mistake, so far as the State is con
cerned, in seeking to draw manufac
turing and other enterprises requir
ing many “hands” to their several
centers. The growth of the cities,
as well as one of the State at large,
is more wholesome if such enter
prises are located in the country
towns. “‘Build country, build town!”
is the motto which leads to general
prosperity.—C. R. Barnes, University
Farm, St. Paul, Minn.

Trading at Home
When you desire to raise money
to put through a business proposi
tion, says the Gainesville (Fla.) Sun,
do you board a railroad train and
seek it from capitalists in some dis
tant city.
“Well. not very often. You go
down the street calling on every one
in sight, and come back on the other
side.
And yet some of us who have
often asked for business favors of
our home people in the past, and
will ask for them again, do not hes
itate to spend money freely and need
lessly in patronizing the home mer
chants of another city ; often, toe, to
our distinct disadyantage and regret.
It is an excellent principle in busi
ness to stand by the people that stick
by you. The man who buys every
‘thing possible at home creates a cir
{cle of business friends who appre
ciate his loyalty and would like to
return it in so far as they can. These
business relations lead to personal
friendship, and they bring returns

from ties of neighborliness and good

A great many things in life go by
favor. When two propositions look
about alike, you choose the one that
is backed by the man with whom
you have had some friendly rela

the fruitage is likely to come back
with a surprising amount of com
pound interest some day, and it
often comes from unexpeeted quar
