Regulations regarding life saving
appliances on American-owned
ships would be extended to foreign
owned vessels as well, by a bill
agreed upon today by the house
merchant marine committee.

the advance bulletin on agriculture
in the United States, which will
be issued soon by Director Durand
of the Bureau of the £Census De
partment of Commerce and Labor,
there is given the increase since
1850 in the number of farms, in
the total farm acreage, in improv
ed farm acreage, and in the value
of farm property.
The greatest increase in the
number of farms and also in the
improved farm acreage took place
in the cecade. 1870 to 1880, but
the greatest increase in the totsal
tarm acreage ‘was in the decade,
1890 to 1900, and by far the great
'est. jncrease in the value of farm
property was in tne last decade,

Obliging Eagle.
A golden eagle which-has been in
captivity in Maldon, Essex, for 46
years, has just died. It was a female,
purchased in Leadenhall market, and
for several years made a nest and laid
eggs. On one occasion, says-the Dun
dee Courier, hen’s eggs being given to
it to sit on, it hatched and reared a
brood of chickeng, but in other years
the chicks were always eatenr as soon
as hatched.
