Fire Department
Had Busy Day
The Fire Department had two
calls yesterday, one in the morn
ing and the other last night about
8:30 o’clock, The call yesterday
morning was to the southwest
corner of town, the home of depu
ty sheriff C. C. Dozier. The dam
age amounted to not over ten dol
lars, only a small hole being burnt
in the roof.
The call last night was to 401
E. Oconee, the cottage occupied
by E. L., Williams. The entire
family had gone to the show, ard
the fire bhaving started in the
kitchen gained considerable head™
way before discovered. The de
partment responded, however, and
soon had the flames under control. ‘
Mr, Williams’ household goods
were considerably damaged as was
the house, The house belongs to
Mr. L, Clute but we did not learn
whether or not 1t was insured
against fire. Mr, Williams’ loss
was partially covered by insurance.

Panama Canal Dispute
‘Would Strain The Hague
Washington, D. C. July 13.
The Hague tribunal would be sub
jected to the most severe strain
ever placed upon it, in the opinion
of the official here, should the set
tlement of the issue between
America and Great Britain re
garding the use of the Panama
canal be referred to it, In this
peculiar case the United States‘
would stand almost alone against‘
the nations of the world in her‘
assertion of the right to discrimi
nate in favor of American ship-f
ping. Unless the parties to the%
arbitration would be satisfied to
select the judges from countries
absolutely without maritime in
terests, such as Switzerland, it
would be practically impossible to
s2cure an impartial tribunal.

A two-bladed German silver knife.
On one side is a man and a little
boy standing ;on the opposite side
is a lion lying dowwn on a shield. A
suitable reward will be given to any
one who returns it to this office. I
think I misplaid it in some store in

much as the gift of a friend, so please
assist me in finding it.
