13 Men Drowned In Mine: “

Thirty-Seven Others Have a Most Harrowing Escape---
Men Drowned 4,000 Feet From Mouth of Mine.
Uniontown, Pa., July 25.—Caught

2 mines at Evans Station, 3 miles
north of Uniontown, this afternoon,
after a cloudburst, thirteen men
Mere drowned and 37 escaped after
a most harrowing experience. The
men were drowned about 4,000 feet
from the mouth of the mines, their
only avenue of escape.
It is reported that at least one
more victim, an unknown foreigner,
will be added to the list of dead. He
wa passed by other men in the mine
when they escaped, refusing to ac
company them to a place of safety.
The majority of the victims had
large families and about thirey c"
dren are deprived of their bread win
pners by one of the worst catas
trophies that has ever visited Fay
ette county. The men who escaped
were forced to half swim and half
walk to the pit mouth through wa
ter ranging in depth from their
waists to their necks, on their way
to safety. The majority of the min
ers were knocked down by timbers
that were sent down the mine with
great velocity in the raging current.

who risked their lives. It was stat

sixty days to clear the mines of wa

must remain in the water where
they perished. Superintendent J.
W. Buttermore was the first man to

the men on the outside rushed into
the mine yelling loudly as they
went. In that manner more than
half of the miners were saved. 3
