Flood Damage Is
Heavy in Florida
Tampa, Fla., Sept. 10.—Dam
age estimated to reach into the
hundreds of thousands of dollars
has resulted from the torrential
rains which have fallen in this
section since last Saturday. The
damage here is estimated at375,-
000. The precipitation in Tampa
since noon Saturday is 14.86
inches, breaking all former rec
ords since the establishment of
the weather bureau here twenty
years ago, by several inches. ;
Tampa suburbs resemble vast
mill ponds, high tides sweeping
over sea walls adding their quota
to the rainfall. Suburban street
car traffie, including the line to
Port Tampa, has been abandon
ed; two thousand telephones are
out of commission and na less
than fifty houses have been un
dermined.
~\ Rains continued today and com
munication with sections below
here has been cut off. Reports
before the wires gave way were
that thousands of cattle had been
drowned, bridges washed away,
roads converted into canals and
growing crops inundated.
The actual practice of business
men coming from their suburban
homes to their places of business,
attired in bathing su'ts, was seen
here for the first time today.
The steamer Brunswick, from
New Orleans, encountered a ter
rific gale 100 miles out and re
ported seeing many sailing ves
sels in distress.
Storm warnings are still main
tained here and all shipping is
tied up in the harbor. Anxiety
for the safety of the Olivette,
which left here twenty-four hours
late Monday., were dispelled to
day when the vessel reported
safely from Key West. Exces
sively high tides continue and
much alarm is experienced by
residents at summer resorts on
- the numerous keys below here,

Agiicultural Department Has'
Word on Orchards. |
Washington, D. C., Sept. 11ies
The department of Agriculture, in .
a report soon to be issued, will |
sound a note of warning to all in
terested arainst orchard invest
ment schemes that hold promises
of profits far in excess of what the
idepartment experts regardas
'warranted, Man) inquiries have
reached the department regarding
\orang‘e, apole and other enteipris
}es where the orchardizing is to be
done by proxy and in some cases
the claims of protfits are alluring
in the extreme. It is possible that
some of these claims will be called
to the attention of the postoffice
department because of the circula
tion of the alluring literature
through the mails,
Not all the schemes are frowned
upon by the department as will be
pointed out in the report. This
document, based upon inquiry in
to a number of the plans, in ot
least one of which prominent gos
eroment officials persopally are in-
terested, will give clear sugges
tions and hints to city folks who
are considering muking invest
ments in the so-called ‘‘orchardiz
ing by proxy.” It will indicate
the conditions under which suc
cessful fruit culture may be ex
pected and the reasons given by
the government. experts why cer
tain system of orchardizitg must
fail,
These investment plans have
flooded the country and have
aroused wide interest,

Two More Indicted in}
Morgan For Vote |
Sale. |
Madison, Ga., Sept. 11.-—The
Morgan county grund jurv this,
morning found two more true bills |
in its investigation of the illegali
use of raoney in the May primary. |
The two men indicted Wednes.’
Jay are Ldgar Askew and C'narlesl
Dennis, both charged with selling |
‘itheir votes. l
The grand jury adjourned at 10|
'o’clock for the committee to com-i
plete its work and for the purpose
lof allowing the clerks of the body{
ito get the general presentments in!
order,
It will reconvene at 3 o’clock for
the purpose of winding up its
work for the present term, and it
is probable that the presentments
will ve read about 4 o’clock this
afternoon.
The clause in the presentments
relative to vote buying and vote
selling in Morgan county will con
demn those practices in words as
strong as the English language
contains.
The citizens who have been in
dicted will probably be tried dur
ing an adjourned term of the su
perior court, which will be held
about the middle of November
next. The court is busy trying
j :il cases in order to clear the jail,
and it is hardly probable that the
cases of those charged with vote
buying and vote selling will be
reached during th 2 present term.
A leading citizen said this morn
ing:
*Morgan couuty is still the best
county in Georgia. She has simp
ly launiered her soiled linen and
attempted to remedy a growing
evil.
“Now let other counties equally
as guilty follow old Morgan’s ex
ample in thus trying to purify the
ballot box and insure clean elec
tions.”
Discovery of Shig
Puzzles Savannah
Savannah, Ga., Sept. 11—The
mystery surrounding the oid ves
sel which has been found buried
deep in the waters of the Savan
nah river is still unsolved. It was
so wet and stormy yesterday that
nothing could be done toward
bringing any part of the old ship
to the surface, but divers and
others are at work again today,
It is believed before the work is
completed that something will be
brought to the surface to definite
ly ix the identy of the old ship.
There are many. who think it an
old man-of-war while others be
lieve it to have been an old slave
ship.
Cocaine Peddlers
Swarm in Atlanta
Say Officers
. Atlanta, Ga., Sept. 11.—The
assertion is made by charity offi
cers who have been investigating
the situation that Atlanta is
swarmiog with negro cocaine ped
dlers, from whom anybody, y<ung
or old, can purchase boxes of the
drug for 50 cents, or even in smal
ler quantities,
It is turther asserted that more
negroes in Atlauta are today vic
tims of the cocaine habit than
have ever been victims of whisky
in the old aays.
Most of the negroes who use
the stuff, according to the police,
take it by the simple process of
snuffing the dry powder up their
noses.

Cool Wave Headed This Way
Ailanta, Sept. 12.—According
to subsequent developments, it
seems that the cool breeze Geor
gians so much enjoyed on Mon
day night, has blown their sum
mer clean away. It hasn’t been
real hot since, and according to
the weather observers a regular
cool wave will be along by the
end week. Then it will be ‘‘good

though lovers of warm weather
may still look forward with
pleasure toward the golden In
dian summer haze that counter
feits the real thing in October.

Which shall it Be?
Do you intend to continue laboring, burn
ing valuable fuel and destroying high priced
food with that old worn-out cook stove?
You know that old stove eats up a lot of
fuel each year.
You know you have trouble in getting it
to bake just right, in fact, spoil a batch of
bread every once in a while—you know it costs
considerable for yearly repairs.
Stop and think and figure.
Wouldn't it pay you to buy a good range
—a range with a reputation—
The Great Majestic Malleable and
Charcoeal Iron Range?
You make no mistake in buying the
GREAT MAJESTIC—it's the range with THE
REPUTATION—ask your neighbors. Then, too
it’s made just right and of the right kind of
materiaI—MALLEABLE AND CHARCOAL
IRON—riveted together practically air tight—
lined with pure asbestos board—parts being
malleable can’t break—has a moveable resor
voir and an oven that don’t warp—that’s why
Ithe MAJESTIC uses so little fuel, bakes just
ight every day in the year (browns bread just
right all over without turning,) heats 15 gal
lons of water while breakfast is cooking—
preperly handled lasts a lifetime, and costs
practically nothing for repairs.
Don't buy the range you expect to last a
lifetime “unsight unseen;” you'll be sure to be
disappointed. Come to our store during dem
onstration week, see the GREAT MAJESTIC
—have its many exclusive features explained—
find out why the MAJESTIC is 300 per cent.
stronger than other ranges where mest ranges
are weakest.

Alleged Movement
To Divide State
Atlanta, Sept.l2, North Geor
gia legislators refuse to take seri
ouslv the news of the alleged
movement in Waycross to cut the
state of Georgia in two by an
amendment of the United States
coostitution, making two states,
one of North Georgia and one of
South Georgia.
The principal argument thus
far sent out by the South Geor
gians in favor of the radical move
is an agricultural one, They con
tend that the two sections are so
widely different in soil and climate
that information furnished to
South Georgia trom North Geor
gia nstitutions is often of no use,
yet the South Georgians pay, they
say, a full proportionate share in
the up keep of the institutions.
