Portland, Me., Sept, 10.—Maire
emerged from the state electicn
vesterday, in which the Republi
canx were victorious, to find her
seli facing another political con
test with five parties instead « f
four in the race for the six presi
dent:al electoral votes,
The Progressive party. whose
leaders had joined with the Re
publicans in yesterday’s election,
came into being to-day, after the
announcement of the election of
William T, Haines for governor,
three of four representatives to
Congress and a majority in the
Legislature which will choose a
United States senator. Former
(Congressman Edwin C, Burleigh
received the Republican preferen
tial vote for senator at the recent
primaries.
Revised returns to-day for gov
ernor, with only five small planta
tions missing, which in 1910 cast
56 Republican votes and 44 Demo
cratic, give: Haines, Republican,
70,880; Plaisted, Democrat, 67,848
Haines’ plurality, 3,032. Plais
ted’s plurality in 1910 was 8.660.
Complete unofficial legislative
returns show that there will be 23
Republicans to 8 Democrats in
the Senate and 70 Republicans and
72 Democrats in the House, giving
the Republicans 102 on a joint
ballot and the Democrats 80.
Interest to-day centered in tne
action of the Progressive leaders.
The Republicans and Democrats
‘already have nominated their pres
‘idential electors, The Progressives
Prohibitionists and Socialists, not
being recognized officially, will
make their nomination of electors
by petition. These papers begao
to be circulated to-dav.
Halbert P. Garduer, in announc
ing the position of the Progres
sives today, said: ‘‘The Progres
sive party, as a party, does not
take credit for the result of yester
day’s election, although the Pro
gressive element in the Repubii
can party won the fight for Mr.
Haines. It did this in order to
carry out the agreement made
with the Republican leacers and
also because the Progressives had
taken part in the Republican pri
maries and felt bound to abide by
the verdict then rendered.
“The Progressive party of
Maine came into existence for the
first time this morning. From
now on it will seek electior for
Roosevelt Presidential electors in
Maine.”
Chairman John P. S. Wilson of
the Democratic state committee
declared that the results yesterday
were encouraging. He said that
the split in the Republican party
meant the election in November of
the Democratic presidential elec
tors. .
The Republican leaders weie re
ticent about the future. Chairman
Warren C. Philbrook of the state
committee, while expressing satis
faction over the result of yester
day’s election, refused to say what
his plans were for the presiden
tial campaign.

Who Had Taken Gas
New York, Sept. 11.—When a
dozen or more persons were try
ing to resuscitate Philip Greck, 2
salesman who had tried to take
his lite by inhaling gas this morn
ing, some one in the excitement
lit a match in the gasfilled room.
There was a loud explosion and
everyone in the room was thrown
to the floor. Seven persons were
burned, one of them seriously.
The explosion sounded like a bomb
and there was a panic in the
neighborhood from fear of “the
Black Hand. Greck will recover.
