0, Love! Lov-e 1 what times were those,
I.OEjr ere the age of belies and beaux,
And Brussels luce and silken hose,
When, iu the green Areadian close,
You inarmed Psyche under the rose.
With only the grass for bedding!
Heart to heart, anti hand in baud,
Y ou followed Nature's sweet command—
Kouming lovingly through the land,
Nor signed for a Diamond Wedding.
i Fn have we read, in elastic Ovid,
How Hero watched for her beloved,
Impassioned youth Leander.
I She was the fairest of the fair,
i And wrapt him round with her golden hair,
! Whenever he landed cold and bare,
With nothing to eat, and nothing to wear,
And wetter than any gander;
For Lore was Love, and better than money—
The slyer the theft, the sweeter the honey—
Aud kissing was clover, all the world over,
Wherever Cupid might wander.
So thousands of years have conte and gone,
And skiil the tnuoit is shiuing on,
Still Hymen’s torch is lighted ;
And hitherto, in this land of the West,
Most couples in love have thought it best
To follow the ancient way of the rest,
And quietly get uuiled.
But now, True Love, you’re growing old—
Bought and sold, with silver and gold,
Like a house or a horse and carriage!
Midnight talk®,
Moonlight walks,
The glance of the eye and sweetheart sigh,
And shadowy haunts with no one by,
I do tiot wish to disparage ;
But every kiss
lias a price for its bliss,
Iu the modern cede of marriage;
And the compact sweet
1® not complete,
Till the high contracting parties meet
Before the altar of Mammon ;
And the bride must be led to a silver bower,
Where pearls and rubies fall in a shower
That would frighten Jupiter Ammon.
I need not tell
How i? befell,
(Since Jenkins has told the story
Over and over and over again,
In n style I cannot hope to attain,
And covered himself with glory !)
How ic belel, one Summer’s day,
The King of the Cubans strolled this way—
King January’s his name, they suy
And fell in love with the Princess May,
The reigning belle of Manhattan;
Nor hew began to smirk and sue,
And dress as ioters who come to woo,
Or as Max Mareizek and Jullieu do,
When they sit lull bloomed in the ladies’ view,
And tlourish ti.e wondrous baton.
lie wasn’t one of our Polish nobles,
Whose pretence their country son-.ehow.tronbies, :
Aid -o our city receives them ;
Nor one of your make believe Spanish grandees.
Who ply our daughters with iies aud candies,
Until the poor girls believe them.
No, he was no such charlatan—
Full of gar :o;iade and bravado,
Count do Hoboken Flash-in-the-pan—
But a regular rich Don Estabau
Santa Cruz do la Muscovado
Conor Crandiseimo Oviedo!
He owned the rental of half Havana
And all Mantanzas ; and Santa Anna,
Rich as he was, could hardly hold
A candle to light the mines of gold
Our Cuban possessed, choke lull of diggers ;
And broad plantations, that, in round figures,
Were stocked w ith at least five thousand niggers!
“ Gather y e rosebuds while ve may !”
The Senor svioro tea carry the day—
To capture the beautiful Princess May,
With his battery vi treasure ;
Velvet and lace she should not lack ;
Tiffany, Haughwout, Bail A Black,
Geniu and Stewart, his suit should back,
And come and go at iter pleasure ;
Jet and lava—silver auu gold—
Garnets—emeralds rare to behold —
Diamonds —sapphires—wealth untold—
All were hers, to have aud to hold ;
Enough to fill a peck measure!
He didn’t bring all his forces on
At ouce, but like a crafty old Don,
Who mauv a heart had fought and won,
Kept bidding a little higher ;
And every time he made his bid—
And what she said, and all they did—
’Tvvas written down
For the good of the town,
By Jet ms, of Laity Flyer.
A cjoach and horses, you’d think, would buy.
For the Don, an easy victory ;
But slowiy our Princess yielded ;
A diamond necklace caught her eye,
But a wreath of pearls first made her sigh.
She knew the worth of each maiden glance,
And like young colts, that curvet and prance.
She led the Don a deu< • cf a dance,
* In spite o! the wealth he wielded.
She stodd such a fire of silks and laces,
Jewels, and golden dre-.-ing-ca^^
And ruby ! rood.is, ai d jets aWrpcatls,
That every one of her dainty curls
Brought the piiec of a hundred common girls ;
Folks thought tne las? demented!
But at last a wonderful diamond ring,
A regular Koh i uoor, did the tiling,
And, sighing with love, or something the tsatix.,
(V. - lint’s in a name?)
Ihe Princess May consented.
King ! ring the bells, and bring
All the people to see the thing!
Let the gaunt and hungry and ragged poor
Throng round the great Cathedral door,
To wonder what ail the hubbub’s for,
. And sometimes stupidly wonder
At so much sunshine and brightness which
Fall from the church upon the rich,
Wiiile the poor get all the thunder.
King! ring, mgrry hc-lls, ring !
O fortunate few,
With letter* blue—
Good for u seat and a nearer view!
Fortunate few, whom 1 dare not name :
Lilettante ! C'retne ala creme !
We commoners stood by she street facade,
Aud caught a glimpse of the cavalcade ;
We saw the bride
In bediamotied pride,
With six jeweled maiden.-, to guard her side
Six lustrous maidens in tarletan :
Sue led the van of the caravan :
Close behind her, her mother,
(Brest in gorgeous moire antique,
That told, as plainly as words could speak,
She was more antique than the other,)
Leaned on the arm of Don E-taban
Sauta Crux de !* Muscovado
Senor Grandis <imo Oviedo ;
Happy mortal! fortunate man!
And Marquis of Eldorado !
In they swept,.nil riches and grace,
Silks an.l satins and lioniton lace;
In they swept from the dazzled sun.
And soon in the church the deed was done.
Three prelates stood on the chancel high—
A knot that gold and silver can buy,
Gold and silver may vet untie,
L : nlcss it ia tightly fastened ;
What’s worth doing at ali’a worth doing well,
And the sale of a young Manhattan belle
Is not to be pushed or hastened.
So two Very-Keverends graced the scene,
And the tall Archbishop stood between,
By prayer and fasting chastened ;
The Pope him-elf would have come from Roiue>
But urgent matters kept him at home.
Haply these robed prelates thought
Their words were the pow er that tied the knot^
But another power that love-knot tied,
And I saw the chain round the neck of the bride—
A gib tening, priceless, marvelous ch-iin,
■ Coiled with diamonds again and again,
As befits a diamond wedding ;
Y T et still ’twas a chain—l thought she knew it,
And halfway longed for the will to undo it—
By the secret tears she was shedding.
But isu’t it odd, to think, whenever
We all go through that terrible River,
Whose siuggish tide alone can sever
(The Archbishop saya) the Church decree,

Texas.—The ludianola Courier, of the 29th lilt.,
says : *, -
“We learn that many of the planters cn the
lower Guadalupe have made more cotton than
theft forces can gather. Several in the neighbor
hood of Victoria have procured about rtte hund
red extra hands, hired from parties on the Upper
Guadalupe, where the crops were shorter. The
coast country never fails to make good crops.”
The jiecan crop, says the same paper, is not so
abundant as last year. Nor is it anywhere in Tex
as, we believe. In this section the crop is shorter
’ by more titan one-half.
