From the Lawrence (Kansas) Herald d* F'ceduin, Oct. 29.
fiicstoi-y of 4ii<l Br-wa,
The first thing the people of Kansas heard of
old John Bro vn v, :s in the ssiuraer of 1 Soy. A
meeting of ultra übolkioniets was, held at C.r/.eno
vi.i, New York, if we recollect liglitly. While in
session, Brown, who is a native ol Essex county,
New York, appeared i:i that convention, and made
u very fiery speech, dutiug which he said he had
four sons in Kansas, and he had three others \> ho
were desirous of going there, to aid in fighting
the battles of freedom. lie could not consent to go
unless be could go armed, and he would like to
arm e.li his sons, but was not able to do so. Funds
were contributed on the spot, ptiucipally by (ier
rit Smith.
The four sens had located on Pottawatomie
creek, in Ly kilts county, and in the fall of is
were joined by the father arid other bi others.—
When the WakaMtsa war.was pending tue old man
and four sons arrived in Law reace ; the bala'nce
lie reported sick. As they drove up in front of the
Free State Hotel, they were ul! sfnt.ding in a small
lumber wsgoti. To each of their persons “as
strapped a short heavy broad-sword. Each was
suppiied with a goodly number of firearms and na
vy revolvers, and poles were standing endwise
around the wagon box with fixed bayonets point
ing upwards. They looked really formidable, and
were received with great eclat. A small military
company w as organized at once, and the command
was given to Old Brown. From that moment he
commenced fomenting difficulties in camp, disre
garding the commands of superior officers and try
ing to induce the men to go down to Franklin and
make an attack upon the pro-slavery forces en
camped there. The Committee of Fublie Safety
were called upon several times to head off Lis wild
adventure, as the people of Lawrence had planted
themselves on the law, claiming that they had
not been guilty of its infraction, and that no arm
ed body of men should enter the town for any
purpose whatever, and that they would not go out
of town to attack any such body. Peace was es
tablished and old Brown retired In disgust.
Wheti the news of the threatened iege of Law
rente reached John Brown, Jr., who was a mem
ber of the Topeka Legislature, he organized a com
pany of about sixty men and marched towards
Lawrence, Arriving at Palmyra, he learned of the
sacking of the town and the position of the peo
ple. lle reconnoitered for a time in the vicinity,
but finally matched back towards Ossawatomic.—
The night before reaching that place, w hen only a
few miles away, they camped for the night. Old
John Brown, who, we believe,’was with the party,
singled out, with himself, seven men. These be
marched to a point eight miles above the mouth
of Pottawatomie creek, and called from their beds
at their several residences, at the hour of midnight
ou tiie 24th of May, 1756, Ailan Wilkinson, Will
iam Sherman, William I*. Doyle, W illiam Doyle
and Drury Doyle. All were loun-1 the next morn
ing by the roadside or iu the highway, some a ith
a gash in their head* and sides and their throats
cut ; others with their skulls split open in two pla
ces, with holes in their breasts ami hands cut off;
and others had holes through their breasts, with
fingers cut off. No man in Kansas has pretended
to deny that old John Browu led that murderous
foray, which massacred those men. Up to that
period not a hair of old John Brown’s Lead, or
that of any of his sons, had been injured by the
pro-slavery party.
It was not until the ”oth of August, three months
after the Pottawatomie massere, that the attack
was made on Os.-swatomie by the pro-slavery for
ces, alia Frederick Brown, a son of old John, was
killed.
The truth of history requires this statement. —
If LL-o.noi was a monomaniac, it dales back anteri
or to bis first visit to Kansas.

Lotseiu IlieSfrct i,
Yesterday morning a tremendous excitement was
created in the lower part of Williamsburg, caused
by the elephant belonging to Vail Atu burgh’s me
nagerie becoming enraged and breaking loose fioai
bis keeper. A roan bad been employd to bring
some shavings ro the menagerie, which were
brought in a wagon. The man drove into the trot
while unloading his wagon the elephant was ob
served to grow restless at the sight of the horse,
which had a white blanket on. The man was ad
vised to take b’hj horse away, but before he could
do so the elephant advanced a few steps,, and
knocked the man down “ith a blow of bis trunk,
lie next seized the horse by means of his trunk and
injured hint seriously. He then seized the wagon,
tiuowing it up in the air and breaking it to pieces.
Hi* anger was now fully aroused, aud proceeding to
the cage of the prairie wolf he sina*! ed it with his
trunk, and release him. Next iu his way was the
cage of a black bear. This cage was demolished,
hut the bear was chained tip and could not escape.
The cage of the zebra being next in his way, he
pushed it through the tent and clean through the
wall of a small shanty at the back of the tent.—
Then leaving the tent lie got into the streets pur
sued by Lis keepers and hundreds of people, none
cl whom were able to cope with the enraged ele
phant. He did not molest passers by, but seemed
to have a great aversiot) to horses, which be w ould
pursue as rapid iy as ho was able, being hoppled with
a chain connecting his tusks w ith one of his fore
legs. He was finally driven by the crowd into the
stone yard, corner of Fouth Fourth anti Tenth
streets. Here a number of workmen were engaged
in dressing stone, and had just placed upon wooden
horses a huge stone weighing about fifteen hundred
tons. In attempting to get out of the sicr.e yard
the elephant got caught by his chain to this stone,
which cheeked ltim. The keejicrs gradually ap
proaefied fiii with chains to fasten his legs, but. it
was not till he had received several severe Wows .
with spears that his attention eouid be diverted so
as to render it possible to further secure him.—
Finally he was thrown down upon bis side, where
he iay for some time bellowing and thrashing about
him with his trunk. Application was made to the
members of Hook and Ladder companies Kgs. I
and u, “ho furnished the keepers with long books.
One of these was run through one of his ears and
twiated round until the poor animal could not move
his head from pain of the wound. When he was
perfectly subdued he was heavily bound with chains
and taken back to the menagerie. He is almost
covered with wounds received from the Looks and
spears, and it is not deemed safe to exhibit him for
a few days, rvor would it be sale for his keepers to
approach within sight ct him.
li is a very fortunate circumstance that no person
was killed bv tiie elephant or trampled to death in
the confusion ol escape. As it is, the pcv r animnl
is the greatest sufferer. This is the hi eg eet ele
phant that hits been exhibited in this part of the ■
country, and ft is the same that a few years since
caused such havoc by escaping from u s cago at
Hailem. These fits of anger, it is sail, ( .■•-•nr an
nually, and the keepers have for some timjo been
expecting gome such demonstration, and i p: a
more careful watch on him.— N. Y. tlcrahi.

The chief argument in defence of the inatitutica

I Indeed, i s <> e no excuse lor their employment in

employment otherwise almost invariably ruins them

the editors, from one of the most distinguished

Stai nton, Yu., Nov. 9, 1859.
* * It seonifl to ire that the time has arrhad
when there should be consultation, and, if possibtf).
concert of action between the Uniou-lovii g men
North and South. We are in great danger of tw
ing precipitated on a purely sectional conuot in
1 oiio. We may stand one such struggle, but not
more than one. *lf * there will be, beyodd wU
doubt, a Southern Confederacy formed, and tb
conflict of opinion will be foliowetl by the cos
: uct of toe sword. This is no idle suriuisf. It
will le an inevitable result. I sincerely hope there
is patriotism find national feeling enough to avert
such a catastrophe. * * * The oui
j break at Harper’s Ferry has given additional in
! tensity to the feeling, which was strong enough
! before.
