very seeera on a doctor in Ms neighborhood, who
has been appointed by tha Court as receiver or .i:s
property, and I am afraid his anger towards this
iu m wili causa him to be guilty of aome rash ac
which will cipose bis plan of operations. I told’
him he hadn’t ought to give too loose reins to bis
passion, but curb it until tba proper time. He a* vs 1
this doctor was tha advisar of hia wife, and had j
himself appointed receiver so as to frustrate all his
pirns, but that he would disappoiut him vet, and
that, once he had h'm in Ids power, ha would uot !

said that this doctor has dishonored his marriage ;
bed. but that he did not care tor that, as he cared
nothing for his wire, as she was a Southern fool; |
that the position her property gave bim, and the |
power to efljct his end, was all he asked for; but i
that doctor had interfered with him in other wars.

tor whi-h he would vat have his heart's bioo I. * 1
■’farced him not to be so blood-4iirrtr, and, in ali
he did, not to spill blood, uu!es in self-defence or
in tabling for freedom. He said that though born
ia North Carolina, he bad, from a child, hated
slavery, and that, in spending a number of year:* I
at ihe North, he had learned to appreciate the phi- |
lsnthrop;c motives of our frieDds, and that he had
pledged himself to work faithfully to that end ever j
shu-e. He said ha had great influence over most
ot the slares in his part of Tennessee, and that he
often met them on the roads and by-places and |
had long talks with them, and that he always found :
them ripe for the cau*e. Mr. P. then returned to i
the hotel with me, and in the evening introduced
me to several merchants, and others, iu Memphis,
who are with us heart and hand.
From my interview with Mr. Palmer, I judge
him to be a shrewd man, and through hia position
and influence, well culcelited to become one of our
principal leaders in ihe South. lie seems to thor
oughly understand the railroad bu-inesa. I would
scarcely expect to fiud a Southern city, situated as
Metuph'S is, in the ini'ist of a cotton-growiag coun
try, so large a number of whites reedy to aid us
and strike, when necessary, for our cause.
Me. Palmer says you must write to him every
week end keep him posted as to our plans, and he
will act in coucert with us in every thing you tnav
direct.
I think he is a brave and conscientious man,
and you need not fear him. He has do doubt
been severely abused where he lives, and bis
wrongs have made him desperate. I have beea
through a large portion of Arkansas, and have
found we have but few friends among the whites
fa that State, as most of them are blood-thirsty
slaveholders; but the slaves are all willing and
ready, and so far outnumber the whites that a bold
rtroke of one day will overthrow the whole State.
I leave Memphis to-morrow, by way of Clirkesvilie,
for Mammoth Cava, where 1 wish to be for a num
ber of days before any thing conics off there.
William Horner has just arrived here from New
Orleans on his way to Harper’s Ferry. Nothing
could have happened better for me. I guess I
must be in a streak of good luck. I feared to write
particulars to you by mail, for the dangers of in.
tereeption. But as William is here I write you in
full, and trust it to his care.
Ha swears to me that he will deliver it to you in
perion, or die trying. He is a good boy and uiav
be depended upon. Now, I be cautious and
let us have a strike soon, it can not come too i
quick, for I believe, from what I have seen, that j
the w!iol* South is ready for it. I have to be verv !
careful here, aa the people are very suspicious of:
Northern men. I sometimes register one name \
sod then another, to suit the circumstances, as 1
travel about. Sometimes I pa*s for a travelling
preacher, and at others a> a New Orleans mer
chant, looking at the crops and tailing of specula- j
tions in cotton, etc. Southern people are easilv !
fulled. If there will be any failure in the Harpers j
err? strike, let me know in time. You shall hear
from me scan. Yours, faithfully,
LAWRESCC THATCHER.
P. S.—Mr. Palmer says you must address your

Much futtre ditcusaion my be saved in refer

to the law of Virginia, chapter 17, section 18, to
which attention is called by the Richmond Enquir

“ The Governor shall not grant a pardon in any
case before conviction, nor to any person convic
ted of treason against the Commonwealth, escept
with the consent of the General Assembly, declar- .
ed bv joint resolution. Neither shall he grant a
reprieve to any person convicted of treason for a
longer period than until the end of the session of
the General Assembly, during which it may be
granted, or than until the end of the succeeding
session when it is granted during the recess.”
The Enquirer closes its notice of the subject by
aaying : “ All hopes of Executive clemency should
be abandoned, for, as we have shown, the Execu
tive, if he had the disposition, has not the power.*

Shall Macau have a Daily Paper ?
HA VINO determined to commence the publication of a
weekly paper in this city at as etrly an hour as prac
ticable, we desire to consult the wishes of Jiecltiaeiis previ
ous to *o doing, on a point of vital importance, via : whether
or not, we as journalist*, shall he compelled to continue the
retrograde movement of old f< gyism and establish a weekly,
or enter the arena of this progressive age end publish a
daily paper. Macon, with a I due deference to the opinion of
others, has never yet a daily journal that would com
pare with those of our sister cities; and yet, would-be phi
losophers enquiringly ask the question, “why have we not?”
The queetiou is of easy solufon Not owing to the disquali
fication of the aide gentlemen, who hare heretofore conduct
ed them, but because there is not sufficient public spirit in
this cominuni.y to sustain such a daily as the times demand.
The expanses attending the publication of a daily paper
(such as we should make one.) minutely calculated is but a
; fraction less than urn ruorsiNP pollaxs per Axxrx. in
eturu for which, one hundred and twenty-five subscribers
together with nvx rrauc spibitxp *) merchants would re
luctantly extend their support, and for their gratification
ami amn-ement, the philanthropic editor would be expected
to expend six thousand dollars more than his receipts, and
bestow his individual labor gratuitously. 80 soon as we
can he convinced that a daily paper will he supported, we
shall establish one that will compere favorably with any
other la the United States. Until that result transpires the
public, so far as we are concerned, must he contented with
the stage coach system of weekly newspaperdom. After
thoroughly canva.-sing the city w# will be enabled to deter
