are many utterly incompetent and unfaithful
teachers —the rca*on-= are chviotts—so long as we
insist upon making it disreputable we cannot ei
p -et tho-se endowed with superior attainments to
assume the ungrateful rod, when they know they
possess the power to ihlne elsewhere. Again, so
long as we hasten children off to school merely for
the sake of “ yettiny them W of th miy,” for too
little caring who it is that trains those tender
shoots, who-e influence must be fell, not only
through life, but immortality. Ought we expect
the teacher to Ik* more careful than ourselves ?
Feeling this to be true, an.i it i< true, with what
earnest solicitude should we seek out thoae into
whose hands may be safelv placed the mental guid
ance of those little ones, wherein repose our fond
est future hopes!
View for a moment the majestic career of those
great mm da, Webster, Clay, and Calhoun; sup
pose, upon reaching the zenith of their glory, they
had left the tangled paths of the atatpsman’9 life,
and assembled about them, not the advanced youth
with strongly rooted impressions, bnt children,
whose pliant minds are open to grasp firmly every
impression in ideas or modes, of tnoughts and have
imparted to them somewhat of their mighty mental
vigor, what deep root it would have taken in the
rich, new soil of childhood’s mind ? Had they done
so, not only would they have endowed with great
strength hundreds of those little thinking organs,
thus eminently fitting them for life** stern duties,
but they would also have placed a beautiful, nay
more, a sublime example before all mankind, thus
beeomiug infinitely greater in usefulness than in
their former sphere. Thousands among the great
of all countries would have been influenced to emu
late their bright example ; and the business of ed
ucating the young would at once have assumed a de
gree of importance undreamed of by the veriest
enthusiast, and it would be more carefully and
thoroughly studied, and more faithfully applied.
What is a more powerful governing principle in a
nation than a high toned education of the people 1*
On the part of those, such wouli have been true
greatneaa, and those brilliant men would have gone
down to their graves b.ppier, and posterity would
bless and revere them far more than now—history
throughout ail time would have recorded the yrent
fart, and her pen would dip deep in eulogy at the
mention of their names. One word to the teacher
—it is to supposed that you have assumed the du-
of your position deeply feeling how much de
volves upon you, and that you know it is in pro*
portion as you are faithful, that you receive the
blessings of those who are benefited by jour in
strnction as well as the converse. There is a most
difficult and ‘jnitu required of yon, not that ascetic
Jianity which makes most unnatural demamis
upon the fresb, young heart* beneath your rule,
but that true dignity that mingles in such perfect
affinity with a loving heart and unruffled counte
nance, fruitful with that “patience and good will
which shall shine out tu your every act, and create
and command the confidence of those whom you
would benefit.”
There is one thing that ought lo receive more
attention both from parents and teachers, that is
the hours of school; aud here again comes in that
baneful principle that hurries children to school to
avoid their annoyance at home; so without doubt
the proposition wUi meet a iih a great deal of op
position—it is, that there should not hr more than
one session per day, say from nine A. M. to two I*.
M., with a long recess at about the noon hour.
Now it U as great a foily to expect a preceptor to
teach trail with a constant strain upon his mind
morning and afternoon, or pupils to learn dearly
without a long recess to recuperate their taxed
energies, aa it is to expect a parson to prepare two
h/ sermons per week, or bis congregation to
<1 ifit them. It is of the utmost importance that
the young should be made to apply themselves
with diligence during the hours of study, but we
iim t give them ample opportunity to repose those
v i*ked faculties and regain that elasticity so re
quisite to enable them to pursue their studua
faithfully. By this means they accomplish more
than by the old ding dong method to which our
childhood was accustomed-
N'either ought we look with any toleration upon
die too prevalent practice of giving lessons “so
hard” that the young pupil is compelled to use
the evening hours in order to avoid the mortifica
tion of “mitung” his lesson. -Vo task should be
iV'irt than may be acquired with in the hours of
at all other times, outside of playtime, the 1
habits of pleasan. reading encouraged would prove
far more profitable than we might imagine. For .
this reason no village school, in this day and land
of books ought to be without its little library ; by
means of which the teacher may be often enabled
to place into the hands of the pupil interesting j
works pertinent to their studies, thereby creating
within them greater zest for their several tasks.
There is one other idea, the importance of which
will be confessed upon a fair trial. The young
almost universally detest composition, (what teach
er says nay ?) the reason is plain, it is that of
making the exercise a most intolerable bore ; and
how can re expect a child to be benefited when
he is nut interested ? Why old Sam. Johnson
himself would hurl a book into the flames as most
profitless uonesense when he could master no in
terest in it: what folly then, it is to th : nk the most
delicate plants will flourish when the sturdy o&k
finds no nourishment. There is a pleasant plan
pursued by a few of our first teachers, which is
admirable on many accounts for the beginner—U
is that of reading to the pupils a tale of decided
‘Ktrre%t, such as would be felt and appreciated by
**ch one, and then require of every one a written
tjnopsis of the story —and from them a very fair
“Minute may be formed of the bent of their mind J .
This also has the advantage, of causing them to
l,ii pi a concise style,"but more than all, of en
couraging an interest in writiug, for what child is
not tMger to give an account of every pleasant
h*ng it has learned or seen *
* *!i the writer a dreamer, an enthusiast, or what
