Gen. Runyon, of the New Jersey Regiment,

members of various regiineuts,] and that they
would be called upon to take Alexandria,
Norfolk aud Richmond j [cries of “That’s
the ticket !”] and that he expected they
w ould not be required to stop until they took
Charleston.
Major Axbersox.—A late Washington despatch
says: “The Secretary of War has granted a fur
lough to Major Anderson, who will soon visit his
native State, where many of his relatives still re
side. The Secretary has the subject of the pro
motion of Major Anderson under consideration,
and has not yet determined what rank above his
present to assign him, but probably it will be no
thing lees than Brigadier General.’ 1
The Norfolk Herald contains the following gra
tifyiug piece of intelligence. We commend its
wise reserve:
We will not undertake to speak of the forces and
preparations for the defence of this post against
our Northern enemies; for if there was not a man
ifest imprudence in doiug so, we might not repre
sent them as strictly accurate. We shall, therefore,
simply coniine ourselves to the fact that our pre
parations for defence are far more efficient than
they were at any period of the war of 1812. The
volunteers we have with us now are well equipped,
well drilled, and a finer looking body of troops are
no where to be met with. We will not, however,
speak of them iu the braggart style of our enemies
of the North, though we doubt not they will give
a good account of themselves, and show their ene
mies at least, a pretty fair specimen of Southern
pluck.
Buffalo, May 3.—Four companies of volunteers
left this afternoon for the rendezvous at Elmyra.
They were escorted to the depot by the Home
Guard, Major Millard Fillmore, Fx-President com
manding iu person. The Home Guard is composed
of retired commissioned officers of the State mili
tia, and is being thoroughly drilled by Major Fill
more. About 150 members are already enrolled.
Crevasse ix bavoc La tut Rent.—We learn by
a gentleman who came down by the Opelousas
Railroad last evening, that on Thursday night a
crevasse opened through the levee of Dr. Hewitt's
plantation, on Bayou Lafourche, six miles below
the railroad crossing. It was a rushing crevasse,
threatening to be very disastrous, tbe bayou being
swollen to within twenty inches of tbe top of its
levees.—X O. Bui let in of the 11 th.
From the Ailauta Intelligencer we learn that a
white man w as recently caught tampering with ne
groes, in the neighborhood of Kingston, and that
be was probably hung ou Saturday. Served him
right. It is well to be prudent in these matters,
but when a man’a guilt is proven plainly to the
satisfaction of a half dozen or dozen of the coolest
citizens, swing him instantly to the first limb.
Save yocr Seeds.—As this is the season for our
farmers aud gardeners to save their turnip-seed,
we would advise them to begin now aud save all,
as well as all other kind of garden seeds, as they
become lit to gather. It is mure than probable
that next season we will need them, as all North
ern seeds will be cut off.
Andrew Johnson and Representative Nelson
were prevented from speaking, a tew days since,
in Bristol. Tenu., and this by the almost unanimous
voice of the crowd assembled. Ho says the Knox
ville Register.
Cijttiko down the Rull.—We learn that all
tbe Inspectors of our Custom House, except two,
were discharged yesterday by order of the Secre
tary of the Treasury. The blockade is likely to
leave our friend tbe Collector, pretty much alone.
