A dmmv vale oi loneliiipts
Is tho Indian Aitininei haze,
That dimly gathers o’er the liilis,
In sunny autumn days;
And o’er Hie brightly tinted leaves
i he breezes soltlv sighing,
Srcoi to wail, with dirge-like voice,
The summer glories dying.
And the »addened undertones
Os spark ling, rippling streams,
Ee.-m like a tunc ot long past days,
Heard in midnight -Ireains;
'Tho' mi-sed the thrill of gity-hued birds,
That seek a warmer shore,
Vet there are fonst warblers near,
As jovoua as before.
Tho’ nature's scenes are full of change,
Yet bounty clings to all—
The springing green ol vernal days,
Or nature’s crystal pall.
T-hv men} . oug of youthful j
Or thoughts of sterner age— -
All, all may be as giided wurus
On time’s unfading page.
Tt is the heart that gives to life
-lrs istliam hours of love—
Earth’s beauties but the ministers
That point to worlds above.
At and every light that glads us here,
*i; l speaks with hopeful voice,
To bid the trusting soul look up,
And in Goa's love rejoice.

Appearancos hive been so far strengthen
ed by the developenient of new facts, that
we are justified in regarding the movement
of the Northern army on Fredericksburg,
as indicative of a -i-rious intention to direct
the campaign isguinf-t Richmond from that
quarter. None but fche Abolitionist (gener
als now in command, ignorant of the coun
try, and spurred forward by their repeated
promise to take Richmond out of hand iu
ten days, could have imagined such a plan.
They have determined to enter Richmond
by the air line railroad from Vv ash.ngton.
The route by A quia cre» it and Frederick
burg is certainly the shortest way between
the two cities. It is, in fact, the mail
route. It is even shorter than the Manas
sas truck ; and it is far shorter, at least iu
miles, than McClellan's course, down the .
Potomac, into the Bay, and up the York. —
But, short as it appears on the map and by
the surveyor’s tape, it may bo safely as
sumed that it will be a more painful pil
grimage than the longest of all the ways
around. Before Burnside gets very far, he
will find that there are lions in his patent
path. There is no point on that road where
our troops cuuuot concentrate more rapidly
than he can advance. The Federal Gov
ernment and Generals seem to have sup
opsed that they would meet with no opposi
tion till they reached Hanover Junction,
and have doubtless felt some confusion of
mind at finding Lee before them at Fn der
ieksburg. They have stopped a week ne ir
that helpless and indefensible village; and,
if thev get into it, they will find it harder
to 'leave*than to enter." They have arranged
in the Cabinet that there would be no bat
tle till their aimy reached Hanover; but they
mr.y find the plains around Fredericksburg,
the highlands iu front and the river in their
back, the prettiest place to be drubbed in,
that. Yanke e ever saw. The whole scheme,
as now freely displayed by their journals,
in the confidence ot success, is eminently
characteristic ol the smartest uatiou iu all
creation. They are undoubtedly an ingeni
ous people, but prjne, as ingenious people
frequently are, to the pleasing delusion that
all others but t&emsehes arc imbeciles and
idiots’
Neither Scott nor McClellan, nor any
other competent military leader, would ever
counsel nr undertake a march on Richmond
|by the lines of the railroads. These were
highly favourable to ttf? drummers of the
great manufacturing powers, but are less so
to those who walk at tie head of heavily
armed regiments. The vulnerable side ol
| Richmond H still what military intelligence
and experience for a hundred years, have
pointed out, her river. The British gopher
that wav without much difficulty McClel
