BOSTON, May 26. isor.
To th« president and members of
the American academy of Arts
and Scnr.crs.
Gentlemen—As that season of
the year is approaching, in which
a general apprehension of danger
fiom lighting is most excited, a
few remarks, on the various means
of seeking safety, may call atten
tion to facts from which may bo
—tiVffuced some useful rules of ccm
duct during thunder.
That the matalic conductor is
not a complete guard from the e„
lectric fluid is testified by two in
stances on the recot ds of the aca
demy ; hut granting it to be pro
ductive of perfect security, its be
nefits can ho enjoyed by the minor
part of society only, whose pecu
niary mean* will afford the expence.
Iu these biicf remarks electric
road will therefore he overlooked
for noticing such particular* as
may lead to rational measures,
within the power of all who choose
toadopt them.
From early lif*‘ I have boon in
the habit of ob>erving the circum
stances attending no electric ex
plosion, particularly where the
loss of life was a consequence and
no instance has fallen within my
knowledge of * person being killed
by lightning in a close room.
• Whether it be a fact that such an
occurrence never takes place, 1 am
not prepared to decide ; b it if, up
on extensive enquiry, iiouc such
shall be found, it may be inferred,
that a close room presents one ot
the greatest chances ot security. —•
On this subject 1 have found the
general opinion to he divided —ad-
vocate s appe irnig av nuru trous lor
an open .a for a close room dating
m thundergusr.
In cases not admitting of ma
thematical demonstration, theories
are often erected upon vague con
jectures and unaccountable preju
dices ; hut it is the dictate ot rea
son that op nton* thus founded
should submit before the influence
oil acts —l would there lore offer,
fur the consideration of the acadc
u»y, tie following motions ;
‘-t. I‘nac a conmatuee be appoin-
ted for ih< pm pose of collecting in
foi m a lion re* putting lives which
have bet n lott by lightning in this
or hi y oiher ci unuy, and of the
attendant circumstances in such
t as- :>s they relate to the situation
of the person or persons at the
time, whether sheltered or ex
posed; also, whether evidence of
i-n) instance can be procuttd of
the less of life by lightening, in
n room, of which the doors, wiu
(Jiw-, and sue-place were closed
at the lime.

A method to perseive fruit trees
from thirjject oj post.
The chevalier de Biercnberg,
of Prague we are told, discov
ered a method of tflcfclually prc.
serving trees in blolfom, from
the fatal effects of thole frofts,
which fomeiimcs in the fpting
destroy the molt promising
hopes ol a plentiful crop ot
fruit. This method is extteme
ly simple. He surrounds the
trunks of the ttecs in bloflom,
with a wisp of straw or hemp.
The end of this he finks, by
1 means of a Itoue tied to it, in
a veffcl of spring water, at a
j little dillance from the tree. —
One vc 11 e 1 will calily lerve
two trees. Or the cold may be
lengthened, so as to surround
(evcial, before it is plunged into
the water.
It is nccclTary that the vcfTel
be placed in an open lituation,
and by no means lhaden bv
ihc blanches of the neighboring
trees that the froll may produce
all its eifcbls on the water, by
the cord communicating with
it. T his precaution is particu
laily neccffary for thole trees
whole flowers appear nearly
at the lame time as their leaves;
which trees are peculla !y expo
sed to the ravages of the fiolts.
The proofs of its efficacy,
which he had an opportunity of
i oblerving in the spring of a 786,
; were remarkably finking. Se.
ven apricot efpalicrs in his gar.
den, began to bloifom about
: the fir It of March. Fearing
j that they would lufFcr from ihc
late Irofls, he lurrounded them
‘ with cords as above directed.—
Pretty fhatp frofts took place
fix or eight nights* The ap.
pricottrees in the neighboring
gardens were all fiozen, and
none of them produced any
fruit ; whillt each of the che.
I v alier’s produced fruit in abun.
dance, which came to the grea
teff perfection.
