THE HERMIT AND THE VISION.

early agns ol Christianity, betook himself* to a
cave in Upper Egypt, which, in the times of the
Pharaohs, had been a depository for mummies,
that he prayed there, morning, noon, and night,
eating only ol the dates whicli some neighbor
ing trees afforded, and drinking of the water of
the Nile. At length, the hermit became weary
of iife, and then he prayed still more earnestly.
After this duly, one day he fell asleep, and the
vision of an angel appeared to him in a iream,
commanding him to arise, and cut down a neigh
boring palm-tree, and make a rope of its fibres,
and, after it was done, the angel would appear
to him again. The hermit awoke, and in-
sJantly applied himself to obey the vision.
He travelled about, from place to place, mnny
days before he could procure an axe; and during
this journey, he fell happier than he had been
for many years. His prayers were now short
and few; but what they wanted in length and
number, they out measured in fervency.
Having returned with the axe, he cut down
the tree; and, with much labour and assiduity
during several days, prepared the fibres to make
the rrpe; and, alter a continuance of daily oc
cupation for some weeks, completed the com
mand.
The vision that night appeared to the hermit,
ns promised, and thus addressed him : “You are
now no longer weary of life, but happy. Know
then, that man was made for labour; and prayer
also is his duty: the one as well as the other is
essential to his well-being. Arise in the morn
ing, take the chord, and with it gird upon thy
loins, and go forth into the world; and let it he a
memorial to the”, of what Hod expects from
man, if he would he blessed with happiness on
earth.”
THE DEAF MAN.
A young Parisian, who went ’with a numerous
party to Lyons to enjoy the pleasure of see in li
the second city of the kingdom, tints relates an
adventure which lie had.
We were lodged at the best inn, and found
excellent company there. The evening bof ire
our departure, I was in the court yard about 5
o’clock, when a man entered leading his horse
hy the bridle.
-Take care of my horse,’said he to the ser
vant.
‘We have not any room for your horse,’-replied
the servant, ‘sjek another stable.’
‘That is right,’ said the man *1 shall take care
of you to-morrow.’
‘I told you,’said the servant, ‘that we had no
room, our stable is full.’
‘Very well,’ replied the man, ‘you look like
a good boy, take care of my boast.’
‘J believe this man is a fooi,’ said the boy,
seeing the stranger walk to the kitchen; ‘what
can he wish me to do with his horse V
‘I think he is deaf,’ said t to him, ‘take care
of the horse, you will be responsible for him?’
I followed the. man to the kitchen. The hos.
toss made him the same compliment as her ser
vant; he replied lie was much obliged to her, and
begged her not to fatigue herself by m iking
him compliments, for he was so deaf that he
could no: hear a cannon shot; he immediately
took a chair and seated Ititns If near the lire as
if he was at home Tit-- host -ss saw there was
no means of getting ml of this man who was
determined to tane a shtmlier in his chair,
w nt into the parlor, where I told tne company
of the hostess’embarrassment; they laughed at
it, and I, above all, who.did not believe that I
should he the dupe of the adventure. Supper
was served, and our gentleman came and seated
himself by the door; we asked him to come to
the table and not make himself a stranger; lie
apparently thought we wished to p'.t him in the
most distinguished place, for he replied that he
was too polite to put himself at the head of the
table. Seeing it was impossible to m ike him
hear us, it was necessary to take patience: lie
ate as much ns four others, and when the bill
was presented to him he drew thirty cents from
his pocket and threw it on the table. The ex
pense of each one ol us was much more; this
they tried to make him understand; but he nl

MUNGO PARK IN THE DESERT.*
Mungo Park, during his travels in tho interior
of Africa, was strippeti and plundered by ban
ditti. on leaving a village called Kooma. When
the robbers had left him, almost naked and des
titute, he tells-.is, “I s t for some time tanking
around me with amazement and terror. Which
ever way I turned, nothing appeared but danger
and difficulty, f saw myself in the midst of a
vast wilderness, in the depth of the rainy rea
son, riiikrd and aim?; surrounded by savage
animals, and men still more savage. I was fire
hundred miles from the nearest European set
tlement. All these circumstances crowded at
once upon my recollection; and I confess - that
my spiiits began to fail me. I considered my
fate as certain, and that I had no alternative, but
to lie down and perish. The influence of reli
gion, however, aided and supported me. I re-
fiected that no human prudence or foresight con'd
possibly have averted my present sufferings. I
was indeed a stranger in a strange land, yet I
was still under the protecting eye of that Provi.
dence, who has condescended to call himself the
stranger’s friend.
At this moment, painful a3 my reflections
were, the extraordinary beauty of a small moss,
in flower, irresistibly caught my eye. I nien-
t on this to show from what trifling circumstan-
ces the mind will sometimes derive consolation;
fir though tho whole plant was not longer than'

several times, and nobody came. Ho opened
the door, and found his page asleep in art arm
chair. Advancing to awake him, he per
ceived the corner of a note peeping out of his
pocket. Curious to know what it was, he took
it, and read it. It was a letter from the mother
of tiie youth, thanking him fur sending Iter part
of his wages, to relieve her poverty. She con
cluded by telling him, that God would biess him
for his good conduct. The King, afier having
read it, went softly into his room, took a purse
of duca's, and slipped it, with the letter, into the
pocket of the page. He returned, and rang his bell
so loud, that the page awoke, and wentin. “Thou
has slept well !”said the King. The pace wished
to excuse himself, and in his confusion put his
hand by chance into his pocket, and felt the
purse with astonish men!. He drew it out, turned
pale, and looking at the King, burst into tears,
without being able to utter a word'. “What is
the matter?” said the King : “what’hast thou?”
“Ah ! Sire,” replied the youth, falling on his
knees,— “they wish to ruin me; I do not know
how this money came into my pocket.”’ “My
friend,” said Frederick. “God often sends us
blessings while we are asleep.—Send that W
thy mother, salute her from me, and say that t
