Effort of Glimato on Consumption,
The Medical Faculty ninbeiunlrg to ques
tion the opinion which has so long prevailed
among medical men, that a change of climate
ts hcn.’llcial to persons suffering with tho con
sumption, Sir J lues Clark, of England, lma
assailed the ductr;ne, with considerable force,
and a French physician named Cnrricro lias
written against it; hut the most vigorous op
ponent of it is Dr. Burgess, of whom a recent
article in Cha nbers' Edinburgh Journal gives
an account. Dr. Burgess contends that climate
has little or nothing to do With tho euro of
consumption, and that if it had tho curatlvo
cill-cts, would be produced through tho skin,
and not the longs. That n warm climato is
not in itself beneficial, hoshowsfrom tho fact,
that tho disease exists In nil latitudes. In
India and Africa, tropical climates, it isos fre
quent as in Europo or North America. All
tho curative resorts, now in fashion, aro more
productive of consumption than any locality
of Great Britain. Naples, Florcnco, Nico, Go-
noa, Venice, all generate more consumption
thnu London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Man
Chester. Madeira, tho chosen paradiso of
pulmonary patients, Is more unfavorable to tho
iliseaso than England. Alx and Montpelier
are no bettor, if not worse. Pisa is worse than
ail; so that Italian climato, for consumptive-
euro, is pronounced an arrant "humbug."—
Cltango of air, in the same climate, is thosana-
tlvo theory of Dr. Burgess, deduced from tho
most cxpanslvo oborvatinns and industrious
experiments in " climatology.” “ Give mo
Italy, or I perish.” "glvo us a worm climato,"
which is now tho fashionnhlc cry of rich pa
tients, will soon ho changed to "change of air
at home," in tho opinion of Dr. Burgess, whoso
■ now theory will bring consolation, If not cm-o
to overy poor poison who tabors under-this
afllictlvo malady and cannot take n'voyngo to
Italy.

Now York Courier if. Enquirer, Is to bo open
ed to tho public in May, 1853. Tho ground
was brokon for tho foundation on Wednesday,
and tho building will ho pushed vigorously.
Tho plan adopted Is that furnished by Messrs.
Oarstonsen and Gl\domcistcr, tho former of
whom Is tho architect of tho Ttvgll and tho
Casino of Copenhagen; tho latter has, soma
years sinco, achieved In Now York an honor
able reputation In his profession. Tho form
of tho building Is to ho that of tho Greek
cross, with a doino ovor tho Intersection of
tho limbs, which nro each three hundred and
sixty feet long, and ono hundred- and forty-
nlno foot broad. Tho donto Is to ho ono liun-
pred and thirty feet In height. Tho litnbs of
tho cross aro conucctcd by wldo, open passa
ges, twonty-tlvo foot in height, which tnaUo
tho actual ground floor of an octagon shape,
and glvo a total of ono hundred and eleven
thousand square foot of disposable space upon
this floor, wlillo thogalloriis contain sixty-
two thousand. It Is difficult to doscribo such
a building so that tho reader unlearned in
architectural terms will obtain n just idea of
Its appearance; hut tho effect of tho plan Is
more that of a glass cathedral than anything
else We can compare It to—savo that tho domo
and pinnacles aro surmounted with flags In
stead of crosses and statues of saints, Tho
building Itself will ho a great attraction.
