PROPOSALS,
For publishing at ATM AW, in the State nf Geor
gia, a new weekly piper, io be entitled the
ATHENE UM.
I N a community < t FrtJpmen, and where a dis»
position to piitromze Literature and Science
is extensively manifested, the importance of a
well conducted nesvspupfcr, must, of necessity,
be generally understood! and among a reading
people, such a paper caWiardly fail of being ac
ceptable. That the A'keneum will be a paper
of this deset iption, it miifht perhaps be deemed
presumptuous to assert i but so far as the efforts
of the editor cau rcudcrlit useful—so far as per
severing industry and attention can insure suc
cess to his undertaking-!-so far, at least, the sub-
scflber cun pledge himself, that be will endeavor
to render his paper worthy tbe attention of its
supporters.
The growing importance of Athens, where
the fiourisiug University of the State is located,
and surrounded, as it is, by an intelligent and
wealthy neighborhood, has induced a belief that
no place in the upper country presenteda more
inviting opt-iling for tlie establishing a new
weekly paper—and the influence of this opin
ion has led to tlie present proposals, and the
subscriber flatters h>m*«lf, that, in the liberal
patroiiHge of an enlightened community, his un*
dertakiiiK will receive an approving sanction.-—
And while his own exertions will be fTersever-
ingly employed to furnish a paper which shall
be useful to bis supporters, he will venture to
hope that his columns may be diversified by the
occasional communications df such scientific and
literary frieuds as may be disposed, through
this medium, to aid-him, and benefit the com
munity. *
To make his paper useful, will be the propri
etor’s principal aim; and in the furtherance of
this object, he will endeavor to give the earliest
foreign and domestic intelligence, with such
portions of Congressional matter, when tlie Na
tional Legislature are in session, as his limits will
allow—together with such original or selected
f mlitical communications,«or moral essays, as
lave tlie public good in view, and are free from
personal ties, but t > articles intended merely to
gratify revengeful feelings, and to provoke or
continue personal contests, no place will be giv
en. And though in judging of these the editor
may occasionally err, it is to be hoped that no
improper motives may be supposed to influence
his decision, inasmuch as the right of rejecting,,
as well ns of inserting communications, must be
reserved to 11ini?,elf.
As an editor, it will be hit interest—as it will
be, under ull circumstances, his inclination—to
give genera] satisfaction. From the line of im
partial duty, he will endeavor not to depurt»and
none shall have cause to accuse him of volunta-
l ily giving a needless offence to a single indi
vidual.
It will scarcely be necessary to say, that the
ol^ical complexion of the Atheneum will be
tepublican. In this age of light and knowlege,
in this country, none other ought to ask, or
could be expected to receive, public patronage.
CONDITIONS.
The Atheneum will be published once a week
on a super-royal sheet,and delivered to subscri
bers, or forwarded by mail, at Three Dollars a
year, payable in advance, or Four Dollars, if pay
ment is deferred tothe end ofthe year.
All subscriptions will be for one year at least,
and till a discontinuance is directed. No paper
discontinued, except at the option of the editor,
until all duet are paid.
Advertisementa will be inserted at the usual
rates.
Qp* Persons dispo&ed to encourage the under
taking, are requested to signify the same by the
first of September, as it is contemplated to issue
the first number early in tint month.
BENJ. BRANTLY.
Editors of newspapers in Georgia, are re
quested to give the above a few insertions.
