KRPUBLIC OF COLOMBIA.
Baltimore, July 30 — By (ho trrivkl
laal night of the aclir. Dandy, the rditori
hive received the following letter, dated
“ La lluira,Jutji II).— fhed the plea-
mire of addressing y.u a few dnya ago,
vince when nothing of importance haa
taken place. The country here ia per-
f ctly tranquil, without the probability of
its being disturbed. Porto Cabello etill
holds out, und I apprehend it nut will he
pixen upl'orjjomo time, as they had lately
received a reinforcement and a supply of
provisions. Having a 50 gun frigate and
»22gun brig, they go to sea ea often ns
they please. The Republican squadron is
o(V there, bring composed entirely of small
Teasels they can do nothing 'with the
frigate and brig. It is much to be regret
ted that Com. Danicle bad nut the com
mand, us all the captains agree in laying,
that had he been there, the enemy would
have lost their vessels. Com. Daniels is
mgeh esteemed here by the govcrndient
and by the people, and he possesses in an
eminent degree the confidence of the of
ficers aud men of tho navy. The land
forces have approached bo near to Puerto
Ouvello as heave their ihot and bombs
into the town. The Spanish commander
lately sent out of the place all the women
children and useless men.”—American.
BRAZIL.
Baltimore, July 30.—in a part of our
impression yesterday, the name of the
Prince Regent of the Brazils was printed
Joseph, instead of John. We regret to
say, that wo have not yet been able to
obtain a translation of the papers received
from Rio-Janeiro—we learn from a gen
tleman who haa perused them, that an As-
tembly composed of Deputies elected by
the people in the several provinces or
divisions ol the Brazils having met. agreed
to an address which they present >d to the
Prince Regent; in this address they set
forth in detail the injuries and grievances
which the people ot Brazils have expe
rienced from their dependence on Portu
gal, and in consequence of the exercise of
foreign Authority over them ; that these
two countries being situated so distant
from each other,'with such a vast ocean
between them, it is not just that the pen
pie of either should exercise any control
over, or be subject to the direction of the
people of the other—they, therefore, in
the unme of the people whom they repre
sent, request that a new Cortes may be
elected Air the express purpose of declar
ing the people of the Brazils an Indepen
dent JVution.
The Prince Pcgefit had returned an
answer approving oftheobject of the ad
dress, ami promising a compliance will)
the request contained in it. The new
Cortes had accordingly been elected, aud
were to meet on the day on which the
Uryas sail* d.—Patriot.

Gentlemen—A regard for my charac-
■a a public ulticer, and a desire to warn
those who may unjustly assail it of the
diliicullies in which they may be likely
to involve themselves, induces me to re
quest you to give publicity to the en
closed.
Very respectfully, ynur obt. servant.
1 . I), PORTER.
Tuesday, July 3l)lh, t822.
Washington, 30th July, 1822.
Sir : In your paper of yesterday 1 no
tice a re-publication of an article taken
from the Federal Republican of the 27111,
1 therelore deem it proper to enclose to
you a copy of a letter addressed by me to
the Editor of that paper, and to inform
you that the determination I have taken,
with regard to him, extends to every edi
tor who may unjustly as3iiil my character
from whatever motive the attack may
originate- 1 am, sir, respectfully, your
most obedient servant,
D. PORTER.

Washington, July 29,1R22.
Sir I In your paper of the_27th 1 no
tice »n intimation of ynur intention to
take the conduct of Mr. Blake and myself
in hand, with the opinion that you " shall
be able tofhew that they laid law and
justice neffe' 0 ” I think it is necessary
therefore,'tiijpform you that this opinion
has beeiijqrrmd without a full knowledge
ofthe'ppofietdings and testimony had in
the casj$sipk1r. Binncy ; and that, ir you
fake upon yourself to discuss the matter
im ex parts testimony, you will do it at
your own risk, and will of course be pre
pared to meet the consequences, for 1
place too high a value on public opinion
to allow my character to be tampered
with with impunity. If the press has its
liberties, individuals aggrieved by it have
atsu the means of obtaining redress secur
ed to them.
When the official trial of Lieut. Abbot
shall issue Irom the press, which will be
in about a week, and when all the docu
ments had, in the examination of Mr. Bin-
ney’s conduct, shall be laid before the
public, which will, 1 am informed, soon be
the case, 1 can then h&Aknri objection to
a just criticism of my agency in these
matters—lor I feei a conviction, that the
public will not only justify the opinion at
Mr, Blake and myself, but bear me out in
the belief that both Mr. Binney aud Capt.
Hull have been wickedly ami maliciously
persecuted, and will pronounce that the
sentence on Lieutenant Abbot was mild,
considering the mag :itude and aggravation
of the offences proved against that officer,
I am, sir, very respectfully, yours,
D. PORTER.

Bowed and Orleans presses so much upon the

of 4720 Bowed 7$ a 9$d; 580 Orleans 8$ a 11$,

A sale of 490 bbls Turpentine was brought
forward on Wednesday, but the highest bid

was subsequently offered and refused, and the
whole has therefore been stored. The low
price of Rosin deters the distillers from pur

power to bestow thnt attention to it which a
concern of*uch magnitude requires, are desir-

and only about half a mile from Darien.
Sea Vessels, whose draught of water enabtA

the Mill, only a abort distance ofl’, with great
facility; as an enolmed plane from the mill, will
enable them to receive the lumber into their
bow ports, almost without expence: and the
mill, as now in operation, c,n fumiah 40 M. feet ,
of plank per day, which may be increased if
found necessary; the power being amply suffi
cient.
The lumber sent from this establishment since
it wtnt into operation lias been allowed to be
lerior in quality and remAriiy in sawing.
I’he commissioners of tlw Navy of (he Uni

furnished from it, and IV is highly probable will
give it a preference in future contracts.
It has alao been aeen and juatly admired in.
New-Voi k and Philadelphia.
The prospect of a renewed intercourac with
the British Weal India .Islands, renders thii -
