The ideas nf aiolcsa pJrfec'Inn, which
many have indulged, will do much belter
lor speculation than for prnolice. Wo
admit that a ligid cour.se ol piety nod vir
tue may place a mail far above the ordina
ry-temptations to viro and obliquity,und
may give a kind nf moral 'ranapuieocy to
his whole lilts. And umuMed tenor of be
ing, prqpltimn circumstances, exemption
from the fiercer agitations of tiouble,
dnudlcsa skies and s radiant aun, com
bined with much internal gnoiluess and
rectitude, may induce a man to believe
that lie is retally above the possibility of
guilt, soil superior tu the esuulle of temp
tation. 80 have wo seen the cleir, ciyvlul
drupe of some pure fountain, reluming
•heir silver brightness and purity, whilst
undisturbed by Hie apprnao)i,of man nr
be.,st, become suddenly dark and muddy
when agitated by a rasli violence. There
the sediment, wfiiclt had subsided to tho *
Bottom during lit calm end tranqnil stale,
begins quickly to rise nod the whole beau-
ty of the scene is marred. While life te
mains no man can say he is perfect, be
cause no mun can foresee the trials by *
which it may please Uml to shake up and
reveal tlie dregs of undiscovered sin in
hi* heart. We ire lid to theie nhscrvs-
tioni that we may introduc e,the tallowing .
view from Dr. Kuliock,iu onto! hil ser
mons on Job.
“ God haa thought proper to leave u,
but parti illy sanctified while we are tin
earth, Even Ihe most Italy are at time,
constrained with the Apostltp to complain
of, law in their member*, warring ,-gnii t
the law ol their mind, and with him, to
exclaim, " O m aerable man that I am,
who ahull deliver me from the body of
this death.” In ciuisi-quence of.this, they
are sometimes seduced by temptation to
ihc copimissinn of ncls, which in the ge
neral disposition of their heart, they ab
hor, and which are cnntsOry to the habitu
al bios ol their soul. The faith of mn A*
hi-ahnm ii shaken, the profession* of ft
Peter are lurgolteA ; and .the exalfcd pa
tience and subinis-ion oflDoh appear to
waver.” If auch be theXff-e with the
great lights of piety, which adorn the mor
al firmament, what shall be the fate of
him, who twinkles like a spark in the
ocean ? If these cedars o'f I. banon bavo
been torn and shattered by the tempest,
what may the bruised reed expect ?
