Niagara.—By Istilla M. Penning.
“ I longed tor Andes all around, and Alps;
Hoar Kings and Priests of Nature, robed in snow,
Throned as for judgment in a solemn row,
Witu icy mitres on their granite scalps ;
Dumb giants, frowning on the strife below—
-1 longed for the sublime —Tupper at Niagara.
Come clear the ring! ye gaping crowds make way,
1 11 charge your champion, thd’ I lose the day—
I love not satire less, when clothed in song,
And most have food, forsooth I’ve fasted long !
A dearth of subjects has denied me supper
And so I’ll breakfast on a bone of Tupper !
Such food lacks taste, to “set my soul aglow ’
To sharpen wit, and overwhelm a sod
In love of a country like a soldier true,
With honest purpose to give each its due,
I wage a warfare to wipe out defame,
Nor spare I words because ’tis Tapper’s name.
And thou perchance has stood where wide around
Hoar priests ofNature, Alps and Andes frowned,
Ami in thy fancy made the sketch complete
With Ni a ga-ra foaming at their feet.
A wilder picture fancy never drew,
Norearth its like, or semblauce, e’er could shew;
Couple such scenes, and if thou hast a soul
’Twould burst its shackles and would scorn control,
Spurning for aye, its tenement of clay,
To speed enraptured to its God away !
Anthem of waters ! grandeur hast thou none
Wherewith to greet us at the Wur-god’s Home?*
Where tenfold thunders rend the glittering spray,
And wild waves madly dash, in loam away;
Where mists ethereal float afar on high
To veil a star, or deck the arching sky—
Where mighty rocks grown hoarv-white with time,
Bend awful brows to shade that lap of thine;
Heave high their heads to guard thy chamber well
Where silence dies, and fierce commotions dwell!
Eternal rocks encompassing the cave,
Where winds and waters struggle for a grave;
Where loosen’delements long warfare wage
And in deep thunders crashing, vent their rage.
Rude Benda’s grot whence ‘/nr, lar down below,
Mighty Niagara i6 seen to flow,
In giddy circles bearing on their breast
That reckess heroine “ Maiden of the Mist !”t
Green Iris, brightest emerald of foam
Whose velvet turf the hermits loved to roam—
Is nought sublime where at thy southern verge,
The white waves weep, and bounding torrents urge
Deep-buried rocks to fly their ancient seat
And find below some safer, new retreat?
Or sister islands nestling side by side,
The trooping currents into files divide,
Where the pr-oud eagle builds his nest secure
And mimic cascades brighten either shore?
But he who ! alone th’impetuous tide
In a braVeleap, nd o’er the chasm’s side,
Hath little seen—for struggling, miles below,
Contending waters fighting as they flow,
Sweep grandly on, like armies, in their flight,
Or driving snows, by drift and wind made white ;
’Till, like tornado in their awful round,
They break in whirlpools, jarring all the ground ;
And the mad waves with plumed and snowy crest,
JLike white swans circling round their ravish’d nest,
Hover awhile in vague uncertain flight,
Then plunging, vanish from our ’wildered sight.
.Men who have souls, are stirred by leaser things—
How “ pious Cowper” to his landscape clings,
‘Till sunset comes, and nightshades intervene,
To shut him out, transported, from the scene !
And Byron spell-bound on the vine-clad Rhine,
Or Burns whose lays with milder radiance shine,
Imbued with fire from Scotia’s wildest scenes !
M. Farquhar Tupper lost thou own a soul?
Or is t but fancy, sac r control—
A tame, cold spirit, c< . . high-flown words
That neither warmth, nor truth, nor zest affords—
A vast pretence of harboring giant mind,
Whose little greatness, vents itself in wind !
Else, thou’rt indeed of finer nobler clay,
Nor Earth’s creation, transform, or decay
Can yield, (what seems to us thy vain conceit)
Thy grand conceptions, form or mould replete
With the sublime for thou would’st fain command
The mightiest works of the Almighty’s hand,
To form a compact of Earth’s wonders fraught
Witbf grandeur that should match thy thought!

JUST RECEIVED a supply of Silver’s Miner
al Paints, fire and weather proof colors; unfad
ing, Silver’s Mineral Paints,differ essentially from all
others in market. They are not Clays, they require
little Oil, they do not work toughly, but flow easily
as White Lead. They lay on a very heavy body.set
light away and become an indestructable covering
of flint. They neither crack nor peel, and require no
stronger dryer than white lead.
I have a variety of colors Red, Yellow, various
Browns, and Jet Black They are superior in body
(or covering property ) to any thing ever discover
